Yubinhaad Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 East Maegashira 8 KYOKUSHUHO Had surgery on his right knee in early April and didn't recover in time. Possibility of a late entry, as a full kyujo would drop him to Juryo. 1
Fukurou Posted May 7, 2016 Author Posted May 7, 2016 East Maegashira 8 KYOKUSHUHO Had surgery on his right knee in early April and didn't recover in time. Possibility of a late entry, as a full kyujo would drop him to Juryo. It must not have been a major surgery, then, if they legitimately expected a come back in only a month.
shumitto Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Six of eight. Six of eight what? Six out of eight are the rikishi in Nishikido who are not going to compete. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Banzuke.aspx?b=201605&heya=58&shusshin=-1 Has Dairaido finally decided to call it a day after almost a decade of unrewarded toil in the lower divisions ? Honestly, when I first started watching sumo he was just coming back from Juryo and I entertained some hopes he would be back some day - and indeed he came close a few times - but it didn't came about. Indeed, it's a pretty heavy list. Edited May 7, 2016 by shumitto
Fukurou Posted May 8, 2016 Author Posted May 8, 2016 (edited) Mods, could all this Nishikido speculation please be moved to its own thread? But please leave the comments about the status of Tsugaruumi and Dairaido that are in the middle of it all here? Edit: Thank you mods. For those looking, that discussion was moved here. WAKATAKE Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 NSK has posted that Amuuru will be withdrawing from the tournament today. Looks like a spot has already opened up for someone in Juryo. http://www.sumo.or.jp/en/honbasho/main/absence
inhashi Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 According to the medical certificate, approximately 2 months treatment is recommended. Amuuru's oyakata states that he will rest a few days, survey the condition, and consider returning.

Fukurou Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 Day 3 So many withdrawing on day 3 you'd almost think it was day 1 again: East Makushita 58 Hirotsukasa (0-1) East Sandanme 7 Koshinishiki (0-1)East Sandanme 89 Yasui (0-1)East Sandanme 93 Masunoyama (0-1) East Jonidan 13 Iida (0-1; fusen day 2)East Jonidan 52 Sasamenishiki (0-1; fusen day 2)East Jonidan 73 Ogiryu (0-1)West Jonidan 82 Takanonari (0-1; fusen day 2) West Jonokuchi 18 Shoryu (0-1; fusen day 2)
Gurowake Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Anyone know what is going on with Chiyonoumi? We've previously heard elbow surgery: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=35112&p=300786 I don't think we've heard anything else.
shumitto Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Aminishiki out according NSK. He injured the Achilles tendon from his left leg. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1644610.html
WAKATAKE Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Aminishiki out according NSK. Not good at all for the veteran. According to this article a medical exam today shows that he will need at least six months for it to heal properly. Isegahama has also stated that Aminishiki is in no condition to do any sumo. At this point, it could very well be the end. There's no way he's coming back this basho, let alone next basho either. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1644791.html
specialweek 2 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 He would still need surgery even for ease of getting around sumo or no sumo. One tough sekitori.
specialweek 2 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Masunoyama out again, not a good sign... Maybe 6 months this time, the knee needs long term recovery.
WAKATAKE Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) So Aminishiki is out, but Isegahama stated that the veteran is hoping to get surgery done as soon as possible to try for the quickest return possible. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1644976.html Given that he's out now, gets surgery during the basho, takes the next basho off, he'll be finding himself towards the bottom of juryo. So we're looking at him trying to mount a comeback in Aki, but that's a big MAYBE. Edited May 10, 2016 by WAKATAKE
Fukurou Posted May 11, 2016 Author Posted May 11, 2016 Day 5 Two more withdrawing, and the first return: West Makushita 11 SHIBA (0-2, fusen day 4) and West Sandanme 87 KOTORYUSEI (1-1, fusen day 4) are withdrawing.East Sandanme 89 YASUI (0-1, absent from day 3) is returning to the basho..
Fukurou Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 Day 7 Two rikishi return: West Maegashira 12 AMURU (0-2-4, absent from day 2) West Makushita 11 SHIBA (0-2-1, absent from day 5)
Yubinhaad Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Hokutowaka, Daionami and Daigofuji have all retired. If I recall correctly, Daionami conveniently acquired Japanese citizenship at the end of 2010, shortly before Tatsunami-beya brought in his fellow countryman Ryuonami. Daigofuji is one of the Nishikido kyujo bunch.
kuroimori Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I dunno if it is a good idea for Amuru to return to duty tomorrow... I have a bad feeling about that. Maybe the prospect of getting demoted to Juryo got the better of him?
orandashoho Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 It seems to me that doing badly after a return is worse than doing badly because youre still absent recovering from injury.
Fukurou Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 Hokutowaka, Daionami and Daigofuji have all retired. If I recall correctly, Daionami conveniently acquired Japanese citizenship at the end of 2010, shortly before Tatsunami-beya brought in his fellow countryman Ryuonami. Daigofuji is one of the Nishikido kyujo bunch. Thanks for that information. I don't see any of them on the most recent retirement list. Is this one of those "announced but not officially announced" things?
Fukurou Posted May 14, 2016 Author Posted May 14, 2016 Day 7 Late West Juryo 12 KAGAMIO (1-5) has withdrawn from day 7
