East Maegashira 8 KYOKUSHUHO

Had surgery on his right knee in early April and didn't recover in time. Possibility of a late entry, as a full kyujo would drop him to Juryo.

It must not have been a major surgery, then, if they legitimately expected a come back in only a month.

Six of eight.

Six of eight what?

Six out of eight are the rikishi in Nishikido who are not going to compete.

Has Dairaido finally decided to call it a day after almost a decade of unrewarded toil in the lower divisions ? Honestly, when I first started watching sumo he was just coming back from Juryo and I entertained some hopes he would be back some day - and indeed he came close a few times - but it didn't came about.

Indeed, it's a pretty heavy list.

Mods, could all this Nishikido speculation please be moved to its own thread? But please leave the comments about the status of Tsugaruumi and Dairaido that are in the middle of it all here?

Edit: Thank you mods. For those looking, that discussion was moved here.

According to the medical certificate, approximately 2 months treatment is recommended. Amuuru's oyakata states that he will rest a few days, survey the condition, and consider returning.

Aminishiki out according NSK.

Not good at all for the veteran. According to this article a medical exam today shows that he will need at least six months for it to heal properly. Isegahama has also stated that Aminishiki is in no condition to do any sumo. At this point, it could very well be the end. There's no way he's coming back this basho, let alone next basho either.

So Aminishiki is out, but Isegahama stated that the veteran is hoping to get surgery done as soon as possible to try for the quickest return possible.

Given that he's out now, gets surgery during the basho, takes the next basho off, he'll be finding himself towards the bottom of juryo. So we're looking at him trying to mount a comeback in Aki, but that's a big MAYBE.

Hokutowaka, Daionami and Daigofuji have all retired. If I recall correctly, Daionami conveniently acquired Japanese citizenship at the end of 2010, shortly before Tatsunami-beya brought in his fellow countryman Ryuonami. Daigofuji is one of the Nishikido kyujo bunch.

I dunno if it is a good idea for Amuru to return to duty tomorrow... I have a bad feeling about that.

Maybe the prospect of getting demoted to Juryo got the better of him?

Thanks for that information. I don't see any of them on the most recent retirement list. Is this one of those "announced but not officially announced" things?
