Doitsuyama 1,156 Posted May 24, 2003 Juzan and Asofuji finished the basho with a strong 6-1 and will be in Juryo promotion zone next basho. Chiyotenzan and Sentoryu lost, Chiyotenzan likely will be promoted but it isn't that clear now. Towanoyama finished kachi-koshi, but didn't look too strong overall. -- Doitsuyama Jonokuchi Jk39w Takemura (4-3) oshidashi Jk41w Asaosodo (3-4) Jk37w Nakatsunishiki (5-2)oshidashi Jk42w Nakane (3-4) Tokitenku started the basho with 0-3 and was on the verge of defeat in his 4th bout too only to have escaped by utchari. He got kachi koshi today with a rapid shitatedashinage. Asofuji has followed his little brother's example fighting a marvellous basho with 6-1 record. He'll get a good position for Nagoya to try to get oichomage priviledge. Sentoryu has some sort of odd streak of feeble home strech bouts as he again lost his final bout one-sidedly. Still a kachi koshi and creeps closer and closer to returning to sekitori. In sandanme Bulgarian Kotooshu finished 6-1 but the loss must have caused him a makushita promotion.

Takanobaka 0 Posted May 24, 2003 In sandanme Bulgarian Kotooshu finished 6-1 but the loss must have caused him a makushita promotion. He'll probably be better off for it in the long run. He still seems just a little too skinny to compete at that higher level, although, if I'm not mistaken, he'll still have a chance for the Sandanme Yusho tomorrow.... No, the Sandanme yusho will be decided in a play-off between Hagiwara (Sd37e) and Tenpozan (Sd60w) who are both 7-0. I agree though, I think another tournament in (admittedly, high) Sandanme won't hurt Kotooshu in the least, it might even give him the chance to make his Makushita debut at a fairly safe banzuke position in Aki if he gets another 6-1 in Nagoya, not the Ms50 or so he would have got if the promotion was coming at this time. Kintamayama 41,271 Posted May 24, 2003 (edited) I would say that he would be MUCH safer starting out in lower Makushita than around Mak20 or so..A 6-1 will propel him to around the top ten in Sandanme. Another 6-1 will propel him into Makushita 35 or so. If he would have won this one, he would have entered at around Makushita 50. Higher Sandanme and lower Makushita are usually more or less the same level. Around Makushita 40 is wjere the heat gets turned up.. the same level. Asashosakari 16,974 Posted May 24, 2003 Another 6-1 will propel him into Makushita 35 or so. If he would have won this one, he would have entered at around Makushita 50. I'm basically worried that he may be a little outclassed in Makushita at first either way, so starting out around Ms35 where he could "safely" go 2-5 might be preferable to a rank in the 50s where even an unlucky 3-4 could drop him back to Sandanme. Of course, now he's probably gonna win the Sandanme yusho with a straight 7-0 in Nagoya and follow up with a KK in Aki and prove both of us wrong. :-D
