Day 13 results and day 14 pairings

Recommended Posts

The first of the three bouts between the three yusho contenders saw Kaio winning against Chiyotaikai. Rijicho Kitanoumi is showing quality in his prophecies; a Chiyotaikai 13-2 yusho probably would have forced him to eat his words. As it is, the best Chiyotaikai can reach is a 12-3 playoff, and only if Asashoryu loses against Kaio tomorrow, so a Yokozuna promotion for Chiyotaikai now is over for this basho. According to Kitanoumi's words it still could be very valuable for Chiyotaikai to finish 12-3 and have a yusho in Nagoya - so I do interpret him.

Miyabiyama, Kyokutenho and Tochinoanada emerge as the best rikishi after the three yusho contenders as Wakanosato and Dejima hit a slump. Wakanosato and Dejima still have all chances to stay Sekiwake as they need only one more win. Kyokutenho likely stays Komusubi unless he finishes 11-4 since there could already be three or even four Sekiwake spots occupied, as Tochiazuma and Musoyama still try to avoid the demotion.

Akinoshima lost today and needs to win the last two bouts starting with Iwakiyama tomorrow to avoid Intai. Still no demotions besides Takanotsuru and probably Takanowaka are sure, but Akinoshima and Shimotori are struggling.

The Juryo leader Tamakasuga also has a two win lead at 11-2 with two pursuers, Kakizoe and Hayateumi at 9-4. Several rikishi are eyeing at a Makuuchi promotion, Kasuganishiki, Ushiomaru, Hayateumi, Kakizoe and Tamakasuga.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of free slots for the four or five Makushita rikishi demanding a Juryo promotion. Sumanofuji and Gokenzan already pressed the down button. Komahikari and Kaito needs to win both remaining bouts, and that's it already. Well, a Makuuchi Intai would also free a place of course.

Both Nada and Tenho dealt with difficult foes with authority. Tosanoumi gave all his pushing strength and grunting repertoire but Nada took it all and calmly defended for a while before dropping Tosa down with a well-timed genki move. Tenho stopped Dejima and walked him out looking in full control.

Tochiazuma had superior position in his bout against Tamanoshima basically the whole length of the long tussle but hasn't restored his power yet. Old Azuma would have gotten rid of Tamanoshima much easier and faster. Clear shortage of power. Dohyo sense is still good and movement rapid but power needed desperately.

KaioU stopped Taikai's tachi-ai and absorbed attack number 2 swinging Taikai back in the process. One push and then a flattening hikiotoshi. This was all KaioU bout. Taikai was all over the place.

Musoyama wisely kept his arms in front of him preventing Shoryu's morozashi. Muso succeeded and Shoryu didn't have that option so he went for sotogake tripping Muso down and helping him up.

Miyabiyama did his thing and did it well too. Wakanosato's sad streak continues. Miyabiyama returns to high maegashira for Nagoya.

Musashimaru was absent.

Well-earned. I have been pleasantly surprised by Miyabiyama this basho. His loss to Kaiho on day 3 was disappointing, but other than his performance has been very very good. I don't think he can get back to sekiwake level sumo, definitely not ozeki, but he can handle himself in the meat grinder. (Blinking...)

Miyabiyama hasn't really been in the meat grinder this basho... Because of Kotomitsuki's injury and probably due to his own good performance he has been matched up against two sanyaku rikishi, and will meet Tochiazuma tomorrow. Next basho he will be in the real meat grinder. (Ranting...)

Wakanosato vs Dejima I am looking forward to this for obvious reasons. Not sure who Dejima fights on day 15 but hopefully he will win one of the 2 matches and get his KK. But the most interesting thing I could see happening is Wakanosato losing both matches, getting his MK and dropping to Komosubi or Mag 1. It would be interesting to see who would then become the next hopeful Ozeki. Would be fun to Tenho make a hard push even at 29.
