Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted March 20, 2006 Asashoryu and Hakuho still are undefeated as they beat Kyokutenho and ozeki Kotooshu. Wakanosato lost to Tokitenku to fall two wins behind, so there is a two-win gap between the two Mongolian leaders at 9-0 and the five pursuers at 7-2, most notably ozeki Tochiazuma and Sekiwake Kotomitsuki. Chiyotaikai broke his losing streak with a rare win against fellow kadoban ozeki Kaio. At 6-3 his hopes for kachi-koshi got a big boost while it isn't looking that good for Kaio at 4-5. Shin-komusubi Roho looks like he'll be back to maegashira next basho at 2-7 after a quick loss against Aminishiki, and Aminishiki is in the best position now to get that free komusubi slot as he is 6-3 at M3e with six sanyaku already faced. Tomorrow he'll see Hakuho. The top of the juryo leaderboard was winning today throughout with the exception of Shimotori, so Baruto still is leading at 9-0 with surprisingly good Kyokunankai at 8-1 and Tamarikido, Tosanoumi and Homasho at 7-2. Toki got another win, this time a slapdown against Kaiho. -- Doitsuyama Day 9 Juryo J14w Tamarikido (7-2) oshidashi J12w Senshuyama (5-4) J13w Sumanofuji (4-5) oshidashi J11w Kakuryu (3-6) J11e Baruto (9-0) yorikiri J14e Hochiyama (4-5) J13e Kobo (6-3) yorikiri J9w Shimotori (6-3) J12e Hokutoiwa (6-3) oshidashi J9e Harunoyama (3-6) J8w Satoyama (5-4) yorikiri J10w Takanotsuru (1-8) J10e Toki (2-7) hatakikomi J8e Kaiho (4-5) J6w Kyokunankai (8-1) oshidashi J4w Tochisakae (1-8) J3w Mokonami (5-4) hatakikomi J7e Daishodai (0-9) J7w Takanowaka (5-4) hatakikomi J3e Dairaido (4-5) J2w Daimanazuru (5-4) yorikiri J6e Wakatoba (3-6) J2e Katayama (6-3) tsukidashi J4e Asofuji (4-5) J1w Tosanoumi (7-2) okuritaoshi J5w Shunketsu (2-7) J5e Homasho (7-2) oshidashi J1e Ryuho (4-5) Makuuchi M16w Yoshikaze (5-4) hikiotoshi M16e Ushiomaru (1-8) M17e Buyuzan (5-4) oshidashi M14w Kitazakura (5-4) M13e Kyokushuzan (7-2) uwatenage M13w Kasuganishiki (2-7) M12e Hakurozan (5-4) hatakikomi M15e Tamakasuga (5-4) M10w Toyonoshima (3-6) yorikiri M15w Otsukasa (3-6) M14e Toyozakura (3-6) oshidashi M10e Tochinohana (4-5) M11w Takamisakari (6-3) uwatenage M9e Jumonji (0-9) M8w Asasekiryu (6-3) uwatenage M12w Tochinonada (6-3) M9w Takekaze (7-2) hatakikomi M7e Kisenosato (6-3) M6w Tokitenku (5-4) katasukashi M11e Wakanosato (7-2) M6e Kakizoe (5-4) hikiotoshi M7w Kasugao (3-6) M4w Dejima (5-4) yorikiri M8e Kotoshogiku (4-5) M1w Kokkai (3-6) oshidashi M5w Tokitsuumi (1-8) M3w Iwakiyama (2-7) oshidashi M1e Tamanoshima (2-7) K1w Miyabiyama (5-4) oshidashi M2w Hokutoriki (0-9) M3e Aminishiki (6-3) oshidashi K1e Roho (2-7) S1w Kotomitsuki (7-2) oshidashi M4e Futeno (2-7) O2e Chiyotaikai (6-3) oshidashi O2w Kaio (4-5) S1e Hakuho (9-0) shitatenage O1w Kotooshu (6-3) O1e Tochiazuma (7-2) oshidashi M2e Ama (4-5) Y1e Asashoryu (9-0) yorikiri M5e Kyokutenho (6-3) Day 10 Juryo J13e Kobo (6-3) J14w Tamarikido (7-2) J14e Hochiyama (4-5) J12w Senshuyama (5-4) J12e Hokutoiwa (6-3) J10w Takanotsuru (1-8) J7e Daishodai (0-9) J13w Sumanofuji (4-5) J6e Wakatoba (3-6) J11w Kakuryu (3-6) J5e Homasho (7-2) J11e Baruto (9-0) J9e Harunoyama (3-6) J5w Shunketsu (2-7) J4e Asofuji (4-5) J8w Satoyama (5-4) J10e Toki (2-7) J4w Tochisakae (1-8) J3e Dairaido (4-5) J9w Shimotori (6-3) J2e Katayama (6-3) J8e Kaiho (4-5) J7w Takanowaka (5-4) J2w Daimanazuru (5-4) J1e Ryuho (4-5) J6w Kyokunankai (8-1) J3w Mokonami (5-4) J1w Tosanoumi (7-2) Makuuchi M17e Buyuzan (5-4) M15w Otsukasa (3-6) M14e Toyozakura (3-6) M16e Ushiomaru (1-8) M16w Yoshikaze (5-4) M13w Kasuganishiki (2-7) M14w Kitazakura (5-4) M11w Takamisakari (6-3) M13e Kyokushuzan (7-2) M9w Takekaze (7-2) M8e Kotoshogiku (4-5) M12w Tochinonada (6-3) M7e Kisenosato (6-3) M8w Asasekiryu (6-3) M10e Tochinohana (4-5) M7w Kasugao (3-6) M6e Kakizoe (5-4) M10w Toyonoshima (3-6) M15e Tamakasuga (5-4) M6w Tokitenku (5-4) M5e Kyokutenho (6-3) M11e Wakanosato (7-2) M12e Hakurozan (5-4) M5w Tokitsuumi (1-8) M4e Futeno (2-7) M9e Jumonji (0-9) M3w Iwakiyama (2-7) M2w Hokutoriki (0-9) K1e Roho (2-7) M1e Tamanoshima (2-7) M1w Kokkai (3-6) K1w Miyabiyama (5-4) S1e Hakuho (9-0) M3e Aminishiki (6-3) O1e Tochiazuma (7-2) M4w Dejima (5-4) O2e Chiyotaikai (6-3) M2e Ama (4-5) O2w Kaio (4-5) O1w Kotooshu (6-3) Y1e Asashoryu (9-0) S1w Kotomitsuki (7-2)

Taka 33 Posted March 20, 2006 (edited) Kaio has great trouble with mobility at the moment. Today Chiyotaikai was very mobile. As I recall the bout, and I've only seen it once so far on the stream so this may not be fully accurate, Chiyotaikai at one point where he usually would continue to bulldoze forward, and maybe lose to tottari or something, actually moved sideways and back a little to gain an even clearer oshi advantage, get Kaio even more off balance and then from there won rather easily. edit: watched it again now and this wasn't accurate at all. It's basically more or less a simple case of Chiyotaikai evading and Kaio at the moment just not having an answer to that. sekihiryu 51 Posted March 20, 2006 (edited) Chiyotaikai broke his losing streak with a rare win against fellow kadoban ozeki Kaio. At 6-3 his hopes for kachi-koshi got a big boost while it isn't looking that good for Kaio at 4-5. Flame warriors - the nitpicker! I do believe he broke that 15 match losing streak in the Kyusho Basho of last year. Today was actually his second in a row of Kaio, it seems Chiyotaikai is starting a streak of his own now! :-) Edited March 20, 2006 by sekihiryu

Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted March 20, 2006 Roho's sumo was so off today that it was funny. Don't know what really happened in his mind. Tachi-ai absence and a feeble slapdown and out he was. Must have been the weirdest bout for Ami too Roho looking like a feather, floating in the air and losing like a Hokutoriki. Watch the bout. Aminishiki does absolutely NOTHING hehehe...Roho looks like a ballet dancer with that gracious little hop. Bizarre bout. First watch the bout from Roho's point of view, then watch it again only looking at Ami. Do you think Ami used any power? Not really. Even his tachi-ai was slow. Peculiar bout indeed. aderechelsea 125 Posted March 20, 2006 quick thoughts again: - Kotoshogiku must be feeling really bad with his sumo lately. The wins aren't coming and he even tried a henka today. I've never seen him try that one before and i always thought he was not the "henka type". Hope he bounces back because i had the impression HE was the "great Japanese hope" in Makuuchi. - The Otsukasa-Toyonoshima bout had one of the most peculiar tachi-ais i remember. Both rikishi were a bit turned to their left (Otsukasa) or their right (Toyo) to favour their best grip (i guess) and showed little power when they launched. I was happy though that Toyonoshima won. I really like this guy day by day ... - Same goes for Takekaze (the liking part). He completely destroyed Kisenosato at the tachi-ai and then just stepped to the side and yelled "TIMBER !!!!!" .... - Asasekiryu impressed me with his win becase he gave Nada his favourite grip but managed to make the nage himself. Nada is definately nowhere near his power peak ..... - Kotomitsuki's tachi-ai was terrifying. I knew he had one of the most powerful tachi-ais but this was impressive. Hope to see some of this power tomorrow against Asashoryu. - I saw Baruto fighting after a long time and i hope this bout was not representative of his sumo. He tried a rather bad henka (i don't mind the henka but rather it's poor execution) and followed up with a strange mix of yotsu-oshi-yotsu attempts. looked like he didn;t know what ot do when Hochi was at the edge. Something that Hochiyama took advantage of and managed to save himself at the edge. He "gave" the bout though when he tried to change the outside to inside right hand grip. Usefull win definately but he will have problems in Makuuchi. To be fair though i cannot draw too many conclusions from just one bout in a whole basho ... I would like to hear more views on Baruto's Sumo from members who watch the Juryo bouts or even attend the grounds
Flying_Monkey 0 Posted March 21, 2006 Second best bout yesterday after Hakuho-Kotooshu has to be Kyokushuzan's back from the brink victory. You got the feeling he deliberately let his opponent push him back to the rope before executing that perfect finish. But surely not... anyway, he looks way too good to be ranked this low... but then he always has a terrible tournament when he's ranked higher... still my favourite, most technically-gifted, most frustrating rikishi. Actually he didn't wanted to do any henka only to get a grip on mawashi from a side as he likes most but he couldn't get it at first and he just tried then to push Hochi out but as he didn't had correctly mawashi at hand then Hochy managed to push Bart back but then Bart managed to get good grip and do what he does better - takes his opponents and drives them out of the dohyo. Jakusotsu 6,017 Posted March 21, 2006 - Kotomitsuki's tachi-ai was terrifying. I knew he had one of the most powerful tachi-ais but this was impressive. Hope to see some of this power tomorrow against Asashoryu.Quite simple: he cheated. He intentionally messed up their first attempt by never getting ready and then immediately slammed into poor Futeno. His aite never knew what hit him. Mickey must be really scared of Futeno's grip if he's reverting to these dirty tricks.
aderechelsea 125 Posted March 21, 2006 did anyone else notice the bruise (??) on the inner side of Wakanosato's left thigh ? forgot to mention it yesterday. does anyone know when did that happen? Was it mentioned on tv? is it a bruise after all or is he decomposing like Dejima?
Jonosuke 28 Posted March 22, 2006 did anyone else notice the bruise (??) on the inner side of Wakanosato's left thigh ? He had it for a while but it appears to be getting bigger. Apparently he suffered a muscle separation prior to the basho (you can actually see his left thigh swollen quite a bit) and he has internal bleeding on the back of his thigh. Wakanosato follows the tradition of Takanohana/Wakanohana who never put a taping or bandage around their body needlessly so it's rather obvious say compared to Dejima's chronic leg problems. It's kind of amazing how he could continue winning with such an injury and never once complaining about it loudly.
