Day 5 results and day 6 pairings

Recommended Posts

Wakanosato and Tochinonada, the maegashira rikishi among the day 4 leaders, suffered surprising defeats at the hands of Otsukasa and Yoshikaze. The other three leaders won, so yokozuna Asashoryu, ozeki Chiyotaikai and sekiwake Hakuho are the only undefeated rikishi remaining in makuuchi. Ozeki Tochiazuma stays one win behind with a win against Kokkai, but Kotooshu lost ground as Ama grabbed his leg to beat him. Kaio gave Roho his first win and is 2-3 and not looking good for the kachi-koshi.

The juryo leaders Baruto, Homasho and Kyokunankai all won while five pursuers lost, leaving only Tosanoumi and Tamarikido one win behind. Tamarikido has a good basho so far in his return to juryo after an the 1-3-11 in Natsu 2004 and dropping to Sd80w in Hatsu 2005. Toki meanwhile isn't doing well and looks like a hot Intai candidate.

Wakanosato might well be absent on day 6. That looked quite bad. Maybe right knee got twisted badly or the old muscle pull. Very unfortunate.

Hokutoriki is getting worse and worse. Tomorrow the highlight of the basho between Shoryu and Hoku!

KaioU will retire during or after Haru basho. There is nothing there now. Stiff, slow and off in ways you wouldn't believe.

Kotomitsuki finally got left hand outside grip.

Hakuho looks very stable. Tochiazuma looks good too.

Tamanoshima should have beaten Shoryu today but that sotogake habit of Tama was Shoryu's luck today. Without that no chance for the throw by Shoryu as Tama had his right hand outside belt and drive going. Tamanoshima often does that sotogake thing at the end of a drive. Today it was a bad mistake enabling that kakenage automatically. Zannen for him.

Futeno is deteriorating day by day.

I don't think Tamanoshima was in position to defeat Asa. He produces a pretty good sumo but I don't think Asa made that move as a last attempt not to be defeated. That was risky but he I'm sure he did it by knowing that he could afford to (not like Asakeryu)

You can't predict a win in that match, but I agree Tamanoshima made that mistake and for once seem able to battle with Asa, but beat it? That remains to be seen. (he wasn't even on the edge)

I can only see the bouts on banzuke.com (thanks to Dale) so I dont have all perspectives, but I too think Asa was never in danger.

But also today he didn't offer a helping hand to Tamanoshima, a gesture I always noticed in the last tournaments ... seems to me that he wants to show everybody who is the master of the universe ;-)

Aminishiki has beaten Asa by similar sotogake during Asa's similar throw attempt some time ago...

Futeno is deteriorating day by day.

I am astonished too. I don't know why he is getting unfocused and can't go with good sumo. Maybe he should stop writing his blog or something. He is thinking too much about his strong hidari-yotsu instead of trying to improve himself in general. He can't win all bouts in the same way - he should understand this obvious fact. I like him a lot hence it is very painful for me to watch him losing (Applauding...) He is great package for sumo champion but time goes by. ;-)

As far as I can see from the movie, Asashoryu has a good left inside grip, changes his right grip twice and then throws Tamanoshima with shitatenage, pushing with his left and pulling a bit with his right. More than a sotogake, Tamanoshima's move seems to be a desperate attempt not be thrown and remain standing somehow leaning on to Asashoryu's left leg. Asashoryu, remembering his sad loss to Aminishiki, instead of trying to shitatenage at all costs, raises his left leg while turning and so .... kakenage. Quick thinking and brilliant reaction !

I disagree 102% with you both then. Asashoryu's right hand doesn't play a significant role, his left hand grip is ok but Tamanoshima easily blocks the first throw/pivot attempt with a much better position (and Tama's main strength) and then does this sotogake move as an anticipation to Shoryu's shitatenage. This is the mistake. By taking his right off the dohyo, he loses a lot of the leverage of the hip power and stability to simply block Shoryu's shitatenage and squeeze the left hand inside grip with his right while keeping his hips low and exerting the pressure. Asashoryu is brilliant in these reactions but Tamanoshima messed up this bout with that sotogake move which made it easier to Asa to spin him around. I wonder if Tamanoshima makes a comment about "rushing it" in rikishi talk. In any case, good sumo by both and Tamanoshima's sotogake attempt was the decisive factor in his loss today. Shoryu used the opportunity.

well ... let me state my view on this too ...

the match starts with the usual Asa nodowa, Tamanoshima establishes a migi-yotsu grip and then Asa gets the left inside and the right at Tama's elbow.

He goes for the spin to throw him off balance (i doubt he tried a finishing shitatenage from that angle) and get the hidari-yotsu grip.

He manages that but loses his firm footing to the dohyo and Tama moves forward. He realises he is in trouble (??) and turns his body to place his legs verticaly between tamanoshima's and perform a nage while raises tama on the air.

Tama realises he is losing the bout and while he has one foot on air and the other barely touching the dohyo he goes for that sotogake which was a dead case since Asa was already turning him in mid air. The kakenage just finished the job better ...

at least that's how i see it.

funny thing though is how differently humans perceive things even though we are not talking about vague concepts or ideas but rather pictures ....

Indeed. I can't see it that way even if I would buy Siddig or Jesi-glasses from the Shoryu-worship market.

Oh well, impressions are the pepper of life. Baffled and out.

I think you are in a minority on this one, Kaikitsune. To me it looks like Tamanoshima initiates his sotogake attempt after Asashoryu has started *his* throw. Tamanoshima is already airborne by the time he hooks his leg behind Asashoryu's.

Hokutoriki just looks happy to cruise through knowing that whatever he gets he isn't in danger of dropping a division... very sad.

One rikishi I have noticed imprving a lot after I called him a disgrace to sumo on the first day (Nodding yes...) is Hakurozan. He looked very good yesterday. Kyokoshuzan too (Singing drunk...). Kokkai looks like he should have just taken this tournament off and dealt with his grief elsewhere. His mind isn't on this basho at all.

Kaio is finished, but Chiyotaikai certainly isn't - he is looking surprisingly good and hasn't really been troubled yet. Tochiazuma... well, I don't think he has been seriously tested yet, except on one occasion and then he lost. Too early to say how he will fare against the big boys.

But Hakuho looks like he is in no danger of being beaten by anyone at present. And anyone who can pick up and lift out the biggest rikishi like that - well, let's just say his strength is no longer an issue. Asa is looking determined again too so the Asa-Hakuho bout will be a cracker. (Eh?)

As for juryo, Mokonami is showing some signs of weakness again. i still think he will end up getting promoted though - he makes the same kind of mistakes that Hakuho was making against lesser opponents a year ago. Baruto looks too strong for Juryo. Homasho still calm and collected and heading upwards...

And for kicks, he's going to get double-digits again next basho and earn more bonus money than he would with a steady 7-8, 8-7 pattern. Smart guy. (Singing drunk...)

Kokkai looks like he should have just taken this tournament off and dealt with his grief elsewhere. His mind isn't on this basho at all.

I'm sure the death of his father isn't helping any, but isn't that pure speculation that it's having such a big effect on his sumo? It's not like he's this normally ultra-focused rikishi who's off-kilter just this basho...he's looked completely lost out there plenty of times before.
