wanchanyama 0 Posted January 21, 2006 (edited) There is an old kesho mawashi on ebay from a seller in France. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PIECE-RARISSIME-DEX...bayphotohosting Can't read the kanji, wondering who this might have belonged to. Mark Buckton 1 Posted January 21, 2006 (edited) several have been discussed and shown fake / of lesser origin - inc. restaurants and ama yokozuna. This one I honestly don't recall. One point though - kesho mawashi were used by those ranked as low as sandanme in the past. Not all - some of the lower ranked blokes. This could explain the origins of kanji being unknown (as who knows every man ever in sumo bar the NSK) Edited January 21, 2006 by Adachinoryu
Jonosuke 28 Posted January 22, 2006 It's rather difficult to say. On the page it says something about 1660 but the banzuke was only found to around 1750 so I am not sure how one can prove a particular rikishi existed and competed in an Edo sumo basho. On the mawashi, it has two kanjis - 袖浦but I can't find any mention of any rikishi with that name. As well it appears to mention a Kesho mawashi is worn by a yokozuna but that is obviously not correct and we all know the first documented case of actual rikishi receiving the license was Tanikaze and Onogawa and they were Ozeki as far as the banzuke was concerned. Of course what it says on the mawashi may not be the rikishi's shikona and in that case it's more difficult to vouch for its autheniticity as a kesho mawashi of actual rikishi.
