Ama!

Recommended Posts

I have to disagree with the theory that Asa "gave" it to Ama. I think the last person on earth he'd "give" anything to is a Maegashira 6 in their first match-up, regardless where he hails from.

[pedantic hat on]technically it was their second match-up[/hat off]

but more importantly, I would say he took Ama too lightly (in both senses), figuring he had a bit of a freebie before the two Ozekis....

indeed, the way mickey blew him away last basho i gave him no chance. you really have to give Ama a lot of credit, not only for his kinboshi but for his entire basho, esp. the way he's manhandled rikishi like Mickey and Roho.

I don't believe Asashoryu would give up any win, particularly not when he was still in the Yusho race. I do think he fought like a low Maegashira, though. He must hurt more than he says.

Injury notwithstanding, we all know he was far from prepared for this basho. You can't go on forever on your credits alone. Mountain climbing can't replace serious keiko. After you win 7 straight tournaments, whoever you are, you become complacent. Fate had it that Tochiazuma and Hakuhou suddenly are in good health, and when they are, we know how good they can be. Asa was too preoccupied with himself and "other" things to really take them seriously. The situation has changed since last basho-we have some top guys actually healthy and looking good.

Can't see why Ama's power approach should be any more injury prone than holding back and waiting to get *-taoshi-ed.

Most small rikishi have been more on the defensive side until now, Terao notwithstanding, but Ama for a change takes the attack route and quite successfully to boot - gotta love that guy! :-S

Do not be so optimistic about Ama (and his winning streak over Asa and Mickey) because these bouts was gifted to him (Gyoji...) Who also want to help Ama to get Sanyaku (Tsuppari...)

Seriously - great tachi-ai (Sign of approval)

Wow, Mickey helped Ama too...

You know something, Shampu. (I am not worthy...)

After seeing Kotomitsuki totally capitulate today, I was thinking Ama could be an awesome yokozuna if he was 40 kg heavier. He could not be stopped by anyone. He has Asashoryu's mental tanacity, the only thing he is lacking is his size which is turning out to be not his weakness anymore. If he can push Iwakiyama or Kotomitsuki around, he certainly belongs in Sanyaku or higher. I always thought of him as the next Terao but he may be the next Kirishima.

The kensho he picked up beating Asa will go far in terms of buying some whey protein, creatine, and other goodies to aid him in his quest to bulk up. I believe he has trouble putting on weight.

115 is tad light if he can get to 135 ish, I think it would be optimal for him.

I've always thought of speed and technical skill being his best points but he has shown a new ferocity this basho. I am starting to think that Jonosuke could be right - if (and it is a big 'if') he is able to add even 20kg and stay injury-free, he would be a real threat to the top positions. In terms of physical development he is obviously still immature (look at his teenage acne!), so he should be able to bulk out over the next few years. It may take him while, but possibly, maybe... anyway, you've got to admire his attitude.

you have to be careful putting on large amounts of weight in relatively short periods of time. you lose speed and agility, those are the two things he does best (coupled with his technical ability). its a fine line to walk, gaining weight. can he sacrifice some speed and agility for weight/size? gaining 40+lbs is a fairly large change in weight, it usually effects overall athleticism. id hate to see him lose the things that make his sumo so unique.

Where's Ama's Technique or Fighting Spirit Prize? It's amazing he was not awared one of these! Is it because he won over "only" an injured yokozuna? >(Blushing...)

I was quite disappointed by this as well, and we weren't the only ones. Kitanofuji on the NHK broadcast was rather vocal (even for him!) in his surprise that Ama came away with nothing.
