English football - Chelsea etc

Recommended Posts

I root for Chelsea when I'm in Tokyo -- I get lots of free beer from my Brit friends, or I did until the American guy bought the team... how about Doncaster? :- )

Wow, that's a relief, despite now losing my already miniscule creds regarding British football...-L- But I was under the impression that the gentleman who owns the Tampa Bay American football eam had purchased a controlling interest in Chelsea. I knew about the Russion guy... okay now I got it... it's the othr way around damn american = Manchester United, damn Russian = Chelsea. Still, perhaps I should root for Doncaster... -L-

Thanks for the correction.

:-) Sorry about off-topic (maybe split this topic admin?), but this is one occasion when it would be better to use 'English' football rather than British football. The league(s) you're discussing are the English leagues (although two Welsh teams play in them - they are the exception). The other parts of Britain have their own leagues. This is particularly true of Scotland (who have at least a couple of teams that could give the 'English' teams a run for their money.

You might think I'm being a little pedantic, but this is not like that baseball stuff you have in the USA, where I believe you have various leagues (and even let some Canadian teams in), as eventually they all get to play off against each other to see who is the 'best.'

A team like Celtic or Rangers (the two best Scottish teams) will never face Chelsea or Man Utd etc in a competitive game, except as part of a Europe-wide competition.

So, it is better to talk about 'English' football or 'European' football rather than 'British' football, as that doesn't really exist.

You may have noticed that the four countries making up the UK compete in football competitions with four teams. With the Olympic Games, for which the UK would have to send a combined team, we don't even bother entering the football competion. For London 2012, this is a bit of an interesting thing, as the home traditionally gets an entry (without needing to qualify) in all team events, and as England is the birthplace of football, and some claim that Wembley stadium is the 'spiritual home' of football, it would be weird if there wasn't a UK team taking part. This is where politics may enter the picking of the team ;-)

Thank you for reading this diversion.

PS As to your previous note about being a Chelsea supporter helps you get free drinks, I find that unusual too.... It might be like me claiming to be a Yankees fan gets me free drinks off all Americans when I'm in Tokyo. Chelsea tends to polarise football fans in England - but not as much as Man Utd. It may be better to pick a different Premiership team with less 'vibes' about it. ;-)

See, my creds are now in total shambles. English football, thank you! I am admittedly very late to the game, and only know about it from talking to Bill Benfield and a few other friends in Tokyo. I do have a couple of buddies who are huge Chelsea fans. And they do spring for the occasional pint, while explaining all of the rules and concepts in the game.

J-League is unwatchable for me, but I do enjoy the Japanese national teams matches. Rugby and Soccer Your football( :- )) just have not caught on in the U-S. It has been 17 years since I followed any American sports, although I'm still a sucker for the 49ers in American football. I enjoy Sumo, K-1 and boxing in that order. What amazes me about English football, and the game in general as played in Great Britian and on the Continent, is the power.

I still get frustrated watching the dribbly passes that go no where, probably the same as you watching a ground-out in baseball. But the way the teams attack each other in Europe, the guys running like hell up the sides and the overall flow of the game behind the ball, is really amazing!

It may be old hat to you, but as an absolute neophyte, I really get goggle-eyed watching.

Now if we could only dump the off-side rule... oh yeah, and a team penalized with the loss of a red-carded player gets to return to full strength if the opposing team scores! -L-

Now if we could only dump the off-side rule...

games without off-side are not to be played by smart people. Off-side is the nightmare of the lazy and the reward of the tacticians ....

and since this is a Chelsea topic never forget:

Premier League we're havin a laugh .... Premier League we're havin a laugh .... Premier League we're havin a laugh ....

(Dohyo-iri...)

Got it! But how come they penalize a team the whole game for an infraction by one player? Seems like if the other team scores against the undermanned team, the team at the obvious disadvantage should be allowed to return to full strength...
