NHK's Sumo Broadcast Guest on Jan 15

Recommended Posts

For the first time in NHK TV's Ozumo broadcast history, one man will handle his guest duty from the beginning to end of the broadcast.

Self-proclaimed "His Excellency Demon Kogure (Demon Kogure Kakka)" of rock group "Seikima II" will work as a commmentator this Sunday January 15 from 1 PM on NHK BS-2 for three hours and as the broadcast is joined by NHK's Sogo (Channel 1 in Tokyo area) and BS-Hi(vision) at 4 PM, he will continue on for the next two hours. Normally a non-sumo guest will work for the last hour and half of the broadcast.

Kogure is known for his deep love and interests in Ozumo as well as traditional Japanese culture and arts. On his live late night radio show "Demon Kokure's All Night Nippon", he used to set up a special segment called "Support Komusubi Daitetsu (current Minatogawa oyakata who is often seen as a dohyo judge)". Kogure says his hero is Wajima and still collects his memorabillia.

Despite his outlandish costume and make-up, his love for Ozumo is real and sincere as he often contributes articles to sumo magazines and even appeared as a guest commmentator for NHK's public affairs program, "Close-Up Gendai".

He has never disclosed his real name or age publicly.

Here's what he looks like as vocalist of Seikima.

I doubt he would come dressed as like this but he will appear anywhere with the same make up.

Everytime I've seen him appear on tv, he's worn some variation on that costume...for example when he appeared yesterday on the NHK General tv broadcast to promote his guest appearance later this basho, and when he appears on Sports-i daily round-up Gekkisen Ozumo.

He is in costume on the NHK broadcast today. And, he's wearing a lovely feathered hat (he sometimes wears a sort of crown)...they are referring to him as "Demon-san".

He also appeared as a guest on Gekkisen Ozumo, the late-nite satellite hi-lites show. He had a make-up modification, new feather headdress, and new costume. Busy Sunday... :-) (Showing respect...)

That is one cool photo. Look at it in the sense of the different subcultures of Japan on display. Premodern and postmodern imagery as well, must notably through the costumes...
