Kotooshu won

Recommended Posts

My gut feeling is that this win sealed the promotion.

(Blushing...)

The ways of the committee are sometimes mysterious though.

Edit: can't spell, see quote in next post for proof

It definitely did; Rijicho has said numerous times all he needs is ten, and he got #10 against the baddest man in sumo. everything else would be icing.

Dear forumers, would you please not post spoilers in the topic title so soon after the matches? I was just about to see the movies from banzuke.com, when I saw this topics' title and found out the outcome of the most important match of the day. I was only posting a new topic, I avoid reading the threads until seeing the movies, but this was in the title "Kotooshu won".

It sort of ruined it for me today :(

I think I would have utterly failed to provide a topic title that hadn't spoiled the content. How would You have put it? Even "don't read this" has a clear massage implied and would look completely silly after the beans are spilled. This is no mailing list, mind You.

Just avoid the "Honbasho Talk" subforum, will you? Easy strategy, really.

Ummm... I think a topic about this fight was already started with the much more subtle (less of a spoiler) title of "Zabuton!" Anyways, good job to Osh, while Asa is maybe looking a little tired, setting up what *could* be an interesting last couple days.

Edit: @Doitsuyama: I do, please believe me, I avoid the Honbasho subforum no matter how much it hurts. I just needed to post a new topic today, and in the 200 ms interval between two clicks the subforum page took control of my mind and whispered me the result. Resistence was futile.

"Asa vs. Osh", "Day 13 last bout" or simmilar. BTW, "Zabuton" it's not that subtle :D

Don't worry, it's not that bad. Well done Kotooshu! (Weeping...) I hope for at least one more win this basho.

A long time ago, it was decided by the forum powers that be that no spoiler tags will be used on the forum, so whoever doesn't want to find out the results should not enter these premises. I know of quite a few members who actually do this.

Kotooshu won

Sure did (Weeping...) This should seal the deal as far as his promotion is concerned..

One of the main reasons why Kotooshu has been so good lately is that he has a style and skill to block his foes' sumo very well and often get in good position while foe is in helpless conflict with Osh's long limbs blocking any grip and forcing centre of gravity back. His left hand outside grip when it disables the foe to get any good outside grip is extremely powerful. Asashoryu didn't have any chance in that bout because he didn't get any grip to work on. Right hand inside doesn't help much when Kotooshu has his left hand outside SO strongly on the belt. This bout was perfect Kotooshu sumo. Everything went his way. Asashoryu on the other hand has similar strength in blocking his foes' best sumo almost every time. When he fails to do that he is in trouble but as it happens so rarely, he is tremendously successful. Before this bout the one against Futeno was a good example. Futeno dominated the bout immediately when he got his main weapon in use and Futeno's migi-uwate is VERY strong. In any case Kotooshu keeps blocking his foes' sumo well with his reach and nowadays clever tachi-ai stance. Hakuho and Kotooshu both have very good migi-yotsu and probably have many bouts against each other from that position in the future too.

I'm one. I always avoid my Sumo folder in my email client, and start up Dale's movies first. If they aren't up, I see if Kintaro made a post on the SML, and, failing *that*, I go to Sumonow and scroll slowly.

How about just going to the NSK site and "scrolling slowly"? That's what I do whenever I cannot watch the stream or follow the live text updates.

Eh...a bit more flavor reading Kintaro's or Ken Coller's descriptions. If I can't see it with my eyes, perhaps with my mind's eye.

I absolutely understand you. The problem with SumoNow's reports is that, while Ken tries to make it as unbiased as possible, is still very selective. Some bouts he doesn't report at all, others with just a sentence. I forgot how Kintaro shapes up his reports, cause I haven't read through the mailing list for a while, but I assume that it would also suffer from the human touch.

The thing with me is that I care about results first, story later. So I first look at who beat whom, and then, if I cannot find the movies, I read SumoNow. And then I read SumoTalk just to see which new levels of bias and what new crazy suggestions those guys can come up with. (In a state of confusion...)

I agree 100%.

If Asa can't defend against his outside belt grips Kotooshu will be unbeatable from now on.

Only few taller guys like Tamanoshima, Hakuho and Kyokutenho can do something about these powerful Kotooshu grips. For short guys like Asa there is almost no chance.

Finally Asa got a formidable foe in Kotooshu.

Eh. Managed to secure his favorite grip once and already a formidable foe? I'd wait a bit.

24 hours ago he was a whimp and now he is formidable ...

please refrain from hyper-hyping rikishi or condemning others (shunketsu) based solely on one day's bouts ...

and i forgot ...

HOW ABOUT THAT TAIKAI?? he beat Kaio after all those years ... now he can win the yusho and by March become a Yokozuna .... Wheeeeeee !!!!!

didn't see the match, but that is indeed much more amazing than Asa losing from Kotooshu.

To be honest I don't really see it as hyping. At least not anymore. For me Kotooshu has now officially ARRIVED. And by beating the yokozuna twice now, he has simply made that arrival all the more impressive.

I think it's completely fair this time, and no in retrospect it wasn't with Hakuho and I was guilty of doing it myself, to view him as a real rival to Asashoryu.

Kotooshu is Ozeki and unless some terrible injury appears he is in no real danger of being demoted either. He is that good. And before someone mentions Dejima and Miyabiama, let me say that they clearly weren't on the level that Osh is now and anyone with eyes in their heads should be able to recognize that.

Hopefully this will finally make the title "Ozeki" less pathetic as the last 4 of that rank seemed to make it lately, together with Chiyotaikai's and Kaio's rather decent performances this time around, maybe there is hope yet! (Nodding yes...)

Now I only hope that Osh adjusts his attitude as well, and carries himself with a good deal more graciousness, especially when he happens to lose! :-)

Cheers

Kotooshu has been a formidable foe ever since he won Asashoryu the first time. And now as a soon to be ozeki he is even more formidable. I'm far more impressed with Kotooshu now than I was with Asashoryu even when he rose to Yokozuna (with absolutely no resistance present at the time).

I disagree with your statement. Asa had exactly the same opposition. If anything, Osh has no opposition-KaioU and Taikai of today are not anywhere near what they were when Asa was coming up. Couple that with Tochiazuma back then, there is no comparison whatsoever-Osh has no real opponents other than Asa and a sprinkling of others here and there. Winning 13, 12 and a possible 11/12 in three straight bashos for a guy in his 16-18th basho only proves how lousy his competiton is. Sure, Osh is by no means a pushover, but let's see him win his first yusho, huh? Formidable? Naah. Very good? Of course.
