It would be good if you could make the romanizations the same as I do. At least we should settle for the "correct" ones. For example, your Omiryu is just wrong, it's Oumiryu as o and umi are different kanji.

Edit: This was my first pretty quick spot. I can't see more differences now, but maybe you could compare your romanizations with mine (see my full banzuke post for easy reference) and contact me for the differences if necessary.

Why don't you both go with MY spelling? OK, kidding... This is very much appreciated. I (and I'm sure an overwhelming majority of forumers) will definitely enjoy it , look forward to it and use it wisely.

Thank you.

OK - now checked against your banzuke. I have corrected one embarrassing mistake which I won't go into. (In a state of confusion...)

The only remaining discrepancy which I have spotted is that I have Jd34e as Ouka and you have Oka. The Kyokai have

Ring Name History : Miyajima - Oka - Ouka

so I guess his shikona was changed to distinguish it from banzuke-gai Oka.

Let me add my appreciation for this topic too! Not being able to navigate through Japanese info, this is great to have. It will certainly add more to my enjoyment of the lower divisions and help me follow my picks in the Makushita game, Banzuke Surfing, and Pick the Yusho Winners, too.

Nice work, but I have a question about this one...

E-jd53 Ohirayama

According to Doitsuyama's banzuke Jd53e is Taiheizan.

Is this a mistake or a shikona change that I hadn't heard about?

It's an alternate reading, possibly created by Naganoyama (and I thought he had stuff automated...). We could make a cool game creating plausible and cool sounding alternate readings for everyone, lower division or not. Guess who in Makuuchi could be Chōshōrō? (rō admittedly rare reading but still...)

I think it is great for many but personally will stick to the Nihongo - part of the enjoyment of watching the lower bouts - reading and figuring some of it.

Think Naganoyama is a 'she' BTW Doits-san.

Sorry. Teething problem. I am looking up the shikona and picking up a historical rikishi with that reading. I should be looking up the rank. Woolly thinking.

Looking up the rank isn't foolproof either - gets hairy when there are several makushita tsukedashi entrants. Looking by kanji shikona / basho is a good key as a shikona may not exist twice in the same basho.

Yes. I agree. At the very least I should look up the shikona and check that it returns a rikishi on the current banzuke! Ohirayama was last on the banzuke in January 1937.

I just noticed that both Stewart Nelson and Bandey have got this shikona wrong. O+umi is a tricky case ... As o+umi at the end of shikona is so common, they have obviously countered for that, but not o+umi at the beginning.

I don't think there is any universal solution for this romanization problem, short of looking at the kanji. Is there?

A general solution for this is impossible, I think. My algorithm just looks o+umi anywhere in the shikona, so it was ok. But there will always be some possibilities to trick that. There could be an Oumiryu with same hiragana, but long Ou at the start, easily. Luckily I haven't seen a long o (ko, so, cho, no, mo etc.) + mi yet.

Just to add a bit of spice to this discussion, the Kyokai have Omiryu.

Unusual reading then, perhaps? This page does list "mi" as a possible reading (among nearly 20 others, admittedly).

Of course, the same site doesn't list a long-o reading for 青, so I guess that's not it...

BTW, marginally related to all this, does anyone know how Stewart Nelson does the shikona lookups? He apparently doesn't just transcribe the kana readings, since scgroup.com strictly tracks the spellings used by the Kyokai (e.g. when they switched from Kanbayashi to Kambayashi last year, scgroup had it immediately).
