Quid Pro Quo

You may remember that noted singer, Yumi Matsutoya, affectionately known as Yuming, presented Tochiazuma with a humongous bouquet of flowers at the dampatsushiki.

As related in the latest entry of his blog, Azuma repaid the favor by travelling all the way to Niigata where Yuming was performing at the Naeba Prince Hotel. Naeba, located on Mt. Takenoko, is one of the foremost ski resort in Japan and is often referred to as the "St. Moritz/Aspen of Japan."

After the show, the neophyte oyakata headed to Uonuma to join the rest of the Tamanoi Gang for the annual snowball fight.

Has he always smoked, or is that a new thing, I wonder?

eh, I hadn't noticed that innocuous little packet there!

besides being mandatory for all oyakata (they are given yearly lung screenings to be sure they actually inhale), I'm sure it also helps with the weight loss...

:-)

Imagine - 10 years or so down the line, you making your way to Japan and meeting Tochi / Tamanoi as he will be then. You express surprise at how thin he looks, marvel at his weight loss over the years and ask him his secret.

He answers 'lung cancer'

I have never seen Tochi smoke - at work or play. Have been at the heya socially a number of times, watching asageiko more times than I recall and often see him out and about around town - never seen a ciggie near the man. Hope he has not started now. His Dad doesn't smoke but can't remember about his bro.

(Clapping wildly...)

For the record, as a former smoker, I meant those comments ironically and tongue-in-cheek. Smoking to supplement weight-loss is obviously among the most unhealthy methods around. Especially for someone who retired due to a mild stroke-like attack.

However, I wouldn't look down on him for it. Humans have smoked for thousands of years. I see it as an individual's choice, not mine to judge.

If his Tamanoi doesn't smoke, he would be a rare case among established head oyakata, no?

The Snowball Fight

tama_0034.jpg

It's been a while.

Sorry for being so slow in updating the blog.

My nose hasn't stopped running since I returned from the snowball fight tour . . .

Maybe, I caught a cold.

We had a great time again this year.

I'd like to tell you some more and post some pictures.

Just be a little more patient.

It's weird. I never used to catch cold when I was active.

It could be that my immune system is weaker. What? I am just older??

It's been really cold so please take care of yourselves.

Amanowaka speaking on behalf of the rikishi at the party on the eve of the snowball fight.

Hello.

I have a superabundance of photos from the snowball fight and was wondering where to start. I guess, I'll just post them a few at a time.

The noodle restaurant where we had our first meal. ↓↓

tama_0049.jpg

Even the building exudes good taste.

tama_0048.jpg

The chilled noodles, eaten in cold weather, was [surprisingly] quite delicious.

Maybe, it's because the water is so fresh and tasty.

From The Hotel

Hello.

Time sure flies. It's been two weeks since the dampatsu.

I still feel my head from time to time to see if the mage is still there.

I am truly grateful to all the people who showed up at the dampatsushiki the other day.

I'll post some pictures from the party that was held after the ceremony.

tama_0039.jpg

The party was at the Prince Park Tower Tokyo.

tama_0038.jpg

And, today, the people from the hotel delivered a sandwich to the heya.

tama_0036.jpg

It was a stupendous sandwich.

tama_0035.jpg

The top was decorated with the design of the kesho mawashi given to me by Matsutoya Yumi-san.

tama_0037.jpg

The inside was stuffed with little sandwiches.

They were delicious!

Thank you to the folks from the Prince Park Tower Tokyo.

This is from last May right after Tochiazuma announced his intai.

The other day, we recieved a large box from XYZ Hotel for Tochiazuma Oyakata.

This was what we found inside.

tmbl2_252.jpg

A kesho-mawashi made from candy on top of a cake/bread.

When we lifted the mawashi, lo and behold!

Inside, it was chockful of delicious-looking sandwiches.

Gotchan (thanks) very much!

Hospital Visit

Last Saturday, I went to visit Wakamiume (Umebayashi) of Magaki Beya at the hospital.

When I was there, he said, "I want to be in Tashiro-san's blog," so I am writing something.

He had gotten sick two winters ago but recovered enough to be released from the hospital last year.

However, he informed me that he was back in the hospital since the end of the year. I had promised from before to visit him but I have never done that so

and asked, "Is there anything in particular you want to eat?"

He promptly answered, "Yakiniku!" so

I went to visit him with a yakiniku bento in hand.

tama_0055.jpg

Umebayashi wolfing down the box lunch.

The entire hospital room was redolent with the aroma of grilled meat.

Umebayashi's hatsu dohyo was in Haru 1999, just one basho after my debut.

He is a contemporary of Isoazuma of Tamanoi Beya.

tama_0054.jpg

Umebayashi with Isoazuma. Isoazuma has some gifts for him.

tama_0053.jpg

He's from a different heya but we gave him a Tamanoi T-shirt and a pair of color-coordinated Crocs sandals.

"I wonder if he's wearing them?

We'll be visiting again so gambare!"

We sure hope he'd get well soon and return to the dohyo.

He reads this blog so please send him some messages of encouragement.

Tashi continues to write about his adventures and misadventures as a former rikishi:

. . . The other day, I was tooling down Meiji Dori in a car, dressed in a suit, when I was pulled over by the police.

I am telling you, I wasn't doing anything particularly wrong.

Why do you think they stopped me??

The truth is that they thought I was a "yakuza."

Normally, I would be driving a commonplace SUV, but on that day, I had loaned that vehicle out and was driving a friend's Toyota Celcior.

Wearing a suit and a light-blue necktie,

I felt rather like a cool-looking businessman.

It was just a routine check of ID, but the experience was awful.

Right on Meiji Dori [a major thoroughfare], I was ordered to get out of the car and open the trunk.

They searched my body for weapons and told me to show the contents of my wallet and business card holder.

They even asked if I had anything hidden in my socks and whether the credit cards were in my own name.

The actual time elapsed was five or six minutes, but it seemed like a long time to me.

One [cop] searched the vehicle from corner to corner while the other checked me over.

It was such a shock that I asked them.

"Am I that suspicious-looking???"

"No, sir. It's just that the car is the type that is often driven by people of [yakuza] connections."

"Oh, is that so," I said [not fully placated].

Days later, I asked the owner of the vehicle,

"Do you always get stopped by the police?"

"Nah, not even once."

What! They stopped me for the way I looked!!!!

Geez, the picture on my driver's license still shows me as a sumo-san.

tama_0059.jpg

I guess once a sumo-san cuts his mage, he becomes an ordinary [Joe. Taro?]

Ahhh . . . I am in shock.

* * * *

In a subsequent entry, Tash posted a picture of himself dressed in the suit and tie he wore on that fateful day.

tama_0060.jpg

He still insists that he looked like a legitimate businessman.

The above picture was taken at the Sky Lounge of the Prince Park Tower Tokyo, the site of Tochiazuma's intai party.

Tash was there for tea with Tochiazuma Oyakata and some associates.

Former Kiyoazuma-san's Blog

1201655667.jpg

In the middle of the picture is Hino-san, former Kiyoazuma.

Hello.

The person in the middle of the above picture is Hino-san, former Kiyoazuma.

Hino-san is currently the owner of a sumo cuisine restaurant in Kameido named "Tochiazuma."

He is 31-years-old, the same age as Tochiazuma Oyakata and me.

Apparently, Hino-san started his own blog recently.

The name of the blog is quite unique.

Right now, the access count is about 10 per day so he said it's a bit lonely.

Why don't y'all go and check it out!

Kiyoazuma-san's Blog (in Japanese)

Note: As an indication of the influence of Tash's blog, the number of hits on the two days after this post increased from the usual 10 per day to over 300!

This Tashiro, the blogmaster.

I received another photo from Osaka (under duress? laugh) so

did an update.

Today's picture shows the four new recruits, who are joining Tamanoi Beya starting with Haru Basho.

From the left, they are Kimiwada, Iwabuchi, Yamada and Motoki.

Motoki-kun at the extreme right is 16 years old. The others are very young 15-year-old rikishi.

They will start with mae-zumo this basho.

They will appear on the banzuke beginning next basho. Please cheer for them.

Tashiro is rapidly becoming a cyberspace sandwich man, promoting restaurants and other businesses all over the country.

In a recent blog entry, he did have some Tamanoi material and a link to a Fuji TV program featuring members of his former heya. A young cutesie visits the heya, watches keiko and then gets the rikishi to join her in some silly antics.

See for yourself.

Having no Amanowaka is also unacceptable, although he may have been the director, what with mobile man-boobles and whatnot...

(yes, Amanowaka was panned over very briefly, but not in the main action-antics)

Mystery Figurine

Hello!

It's been a while.

I have so many things that I need to do lately [with the impending wedding] that I'm kerfuffled to the degree of becoming feverish.

But, hey, no problema. I shall gambarize!

Well, the other day I received an e-mail from a certain fellow in Osaka.

In the message were the words, "Work in Progress," and enclosed was a photograph.

This is the photo. ↓↓

tama_0085.jpg

Huh? What the heck is this?

In the e-mail that arrived the next day, there was the message, "I added a torso," accompanied by another photo.

This is that photo. ↓↓

tama_0086.jpg

It looks kinda familiar . . . I'm sure I've seen that mug before.

About three days later,

an e-mail with "All complete!" arrived.

There was another photo attached. When I opened it,

ta da ↓↓

tama_0083.jpg

. . .

The culprit that made this was none other than this guy ↓↓

tama_0084.jpg

"The Tooyama figurine has finally been completed! Even if I say so myself, it is quite a wonderful piece of work," bragged Isoazuma.

"Please place it at a prominent spot in your house. It is a wedding present from me."

When I took at look at the back,

tama_0087.jpg

It's wearing a Tamanoi Records T-shirt.

I understand it is Isoazuma's plan to make a mold and mass produce the figurine . . .

Hey, stop fooling around with other people's likeness. (anger)

But, actually, I am quite pleased by the whole thing.

The Time Has Come

Good Evening.

I apologize for neglecting the blog.

Finally, the [fateful] day has arrived.

Right now, it is just past midnight, so today is my wedding day.

I've been staying at a hotel since yesterday, but I can't seem to get much sleep.

I have been doing all sorts of preparations for tomorrow [sic]. I just want to do my very best to make it the finest wedding ceremony.

Well, actually, I have only a supporting role.

The star of the day is, of course, the bride.

When things settle down a bit, I will post some pictures.

Now, I am going to practice my speech, once again.

Wedding Reception

Good Evening.

On last Sunday, April 20, we held our wedding reception at the Prince Park Tower Tokyo in Shiba Park.

I still don't have the [wedding] pictures back, so I am posting one that was given to me.

1208820523.jpg

I am truly appreciative to everyone for participating in the grand celebration.

There were many surprises. I was quite moved by it all.

There are some more pictures in Kiyoazuma-san's blog, which I introduced a while ago.

[One of them is a photo of] another "bride," who suddenly burst into the reception!!!

Kiyoazuma-san's blog can be accessed here.

Actually, right now, I am updating the blog from the Yahoo Cafe at Narita Airport, from where I am leaving for my honeymoon.

The flight is at 10 p.m., so I am killing some time by surfing the net.

Well, we'll be leaving now. Bye.

10 PM is a pretty late flight.

Not many scheduled flights depart that late.

As a matter of fact, it means only one thing. The honeymoon is in Hawaii.

A great place to go for honeymoon. My sister-in-law had theirs there. I got married in Hawaii but went to Tahiti for honeymoon and got hit by a cyclone. We should have stayed in Hawaii.
