madorosumaru 6 Posted August 21, 2006 08/18/06 Soma Camp - Part 4 Photo: Karatsuumi and Teruazuma-san. Hello! This is Tooyama. For today's blog, I would like to write about the Bon Odori at Soma Camp. We fixed up the dohyo at the heya in Tokyo yesterday, and we resumed keiko this morning. It was really HOT again today. Everyone from the heya participated in the traditional Soma Bon Festival again this year. We got on the bus and headed from the camp to the Bon Odori site. Photo: Enroute on the bus are Ikinoshima and Shibuya, who is giving the peace sign in the back. All of us were supposed to be on this bus, but Amanowaka was missing . . . A few minutes after we arrived at the venue, a black limousine pulled up . . . It was Amanowaka making his appearance in a black Century. He was waving to the people on the street as if he were a member of the royal family. (Actually, the car belongs to an acquaintance and he was merely the navigator.) We are waiting for the opening ceremony wearing our uniform Tamanoi happi coats. It was a magnificent event with, I heard, over 1000 participants again this year. Amanowaka is the favorite of the children. He makes friends with them in no time at all ('cuz they are the same mental age?) After an hour and half of Bon Odori, Tokiryu, Takaazuma, Ikeda are eating shaved ice. Shibuya, apparently, prefers frankfurter over the cold stuff. That's about it form the Soma Camp. (for now) We had a great camp in Soma again this year. People of Soma City, thank you very much! We will gambarize with Soma Power in Aki Basho! madorosumaru 6 Posted August 24, 2006 08/24/06 Koshien. Waseda Wins! Hello! This is Tooyama. Wasn't the finals of Koshien simply awesome! The back-and-forth play of two teams that just wouldn't give up. They fought to their last ounce of energy in the kind of epic battle that would surely go down in history. There were so many things we could learn from them just by watching on television. So, what did Takazuma, the rikishi from Brazil, get out of all this? "Wipe sweat off face with handkerchief." - Takaazuma "Bring dirt home." - Takaazuma ". . . . ." "Geez. The guy just doesn't get it." Sez Tooyama as he wipes his face with a handkerchief. (Laugh) Chris (Takaazuma) doesn't know beans about Koshien. Apparently, this is the first time he ever watched it closely. I told him: "It's the losers that take the dirt home." "Duh! Is that right?" - Takaazuma Tamanoi Beya -------------------- 「世界の相撲ファンのみなさん、 これからも宜しくお願いします!」- 東桜山 "Sumo fans from around the world, I hope for continued good relationship in the future." - Tooyama

madorosumaru 6 Posted September 2, 2006 08/31/06 Heading Towards Aki Basho Hello! This is Tooyama. The picture above is from yesterday's keiko. It is a scene from the makushita keiko. Sakaigawa Beya, our neighbors in Adachi-ku, and Oitekaze Beya, from nearby Kusaka City, came for degeiko. From Sakaigawa Beya, all their sandanme and above rikishi, headed by Iwakiyama-zeki, were here. From Oitekaze Beya, makushita rikishi, Daishodai-san and Daishoma came. Photo: Keiko between Sawai of Sakaigawa Beya and former juryo Daishodai-san. Everyone was getting a good workout. We are gambarizing by facing an assortment of opponents so that we can achieve a good record in Aki Basho. Now, to change the subject . . . I would like to write something about the Children's Festival that I announced the other day. Despite the late notice, many people took the trouble to travel long distances to participate. Thank you very much! The large crowd that came. Ohidake, the sewanin, is at the far left, helping with the barbequed corn stand. Toshinyama-san and Yoshiazuma-san at the hot dog stand. Amanowaka, working at the bar-bq squid stand, and Tooyama, giving him a hard time. Tochiazuma-zeki also participated in the festival. Tochiazuma-zeki, slicing watermelon with a long knife. Man, he's good! Tochiazuma-zeki, trying his luck at the goldfish scoop. The result . . .? The word on the street was, he caught 2. Then, he tried the ring toss. Lo and behold, he won 10 kilos of rice. However, he refused the prize. Amanowaka, attempting the loach (dojo) grab. He doesn't look too happy. The grand finale was a barbeque! Everyone is looking at the camera except me. I was reaching for a can of drink. The blog was chockful of photos today. Here is one more bonus shot. Shibuya, at the buttered potato stand, being nabbed for petty (grand?) larceny--eating up the profits. madorosumaru 6 Posted September 9, 2006 09/05/06 "No Chanko, No Life" Hello! This is Tooyama. It's been getting a bit cooler recently. In five days, Aki Basho will begin. The fatigue level is at its peak for all the rikishi. From around Thursday, the keiko will start to get a little lighter. We'd like to get into optimal shape for the Aki Basho. Well, as for the picture above, A toddler is wearing a "Tama-Record T-shirt!!" Or rather, he is being forced to wear one! (Laugh) A cozy two-shot with me. No, no, no. He isn't my kid!! (Sweat) This toddler belongs to a couple who lives near the former Tamanoi Beya and is named Haruaki-kun (9 months) At first, he was frightened and was crying but, in no time at all, he made me into a plaything. Together with the Oyakata. BTW, the oyakata is wearing the old "Tamanoi T-shirt." Eating chanko at 9 months. Indeed, it's "No Chanko, No Life." Haruaki-kun! We are waiting for you to join us at Tamanoi Beya in 14 years!!! Tamanoi Beya Home Page It has been updated! You can now see videos! madorosumaru 6 Posted September 12, 2006 09/11/06 Aki Basho has Begun Good evening. This is Tooyama. Aki Basho began yesterday! My PC is on the blink so I apologize for my update via cell phone. Today, Takaazuma, who has been kyujo due to an injury, won his bout by tsuki-dashi for Comeback Victory #1. Tomorrow, Ikinoshima will return to the dohyo for the first time in a year for mae-zumo! Thanks to your support, I was able to win my first match today. I will also gambarize tomorrow. Please continue to cheer for us this basho! madorosumaru 6 Posted September 14, 2006 09/12/06 Today's Chanko Good evening! This is Ikeda! It's been a while since I wrote a blog. I intend to do my best to update some during the basho. The picture shows an evening chanko. The featured nabe was pork "chiri" (a kind of shabu-shabu). It's quite tasty with a soy-vinegar sauce. Still, if you eat it everyday, you would probably get sick and tired of it. (Laugh) Besides that, there was stir-fried pork with veggie, natto, squash salad, braised beef tendon with potatoes and teriyaki eggplants. Truthfully, this afternoon, there was some leftover "mozuku" seaweed dipped in vinegar and I finished it all by myself. Recently, I'm really into eating "mozuku." Well, ta-ta for now . . . madorosumaru 6 Posted September 16, 2006 09/12/06 Chanko Story Part 2 Good evening! This is Ikeda! Today's story is about chanko again. Sorry, it's always about food. (Laugh) The nabe in the picture has been mostly consumed and there is some udon in it. Osumo-san, as a "final thrust" of a meal, pour the remaining soup from the nabe onto udon or rice and eat, or rather, stuff it down our throats. By doing that, we will go through another "growth spurt." Here is Takaazuma "daintily" partaking in some udon! madorosumaru 6 Posted September 18, 2006 09/15/06 The Portable Shrine Hello! This is Tooyama. I don't have a bout today so I will update during the day. Once the basho started, Ikeda said, "I'll do the updating during the basho" so I have been taking it easy. As for today's picture, there was a festival in the heya neighborhood on Shonichi. This is the scene where the "Portable Shrine" passed in front of the heya. At first, the children were carrying it. No, no! We didn't usurp the shrine from the kids . . . Amanowaka always looks like he is having a good time! We had them pray for victory and safety for all of us. Ten Days Left to this basho! We Shall Gambarize! Tamanoi Beya -------------------- 「世界の相撲ファンのみなさん、 これからも宜しくお願いします!」- 東桜山 "Sumo fans from around the world, I hope for continued good relationship in the future." - Tooyama We shall gambarize We shall gambarize We shall gambarize every day CHORUS: Oh, deep in my heart I do believe (If we gambarize) We shall be yokozuna some day
madorosumaru 6 Posted September 19, 2006 Shaved Ice Hello! This is Ikeda. I was finally able to get my first win yesterday! Once again, I found out how difficult sumo really is. We are still having some very hot days, and when it's broilingly hot, nothing beats "shaved ice." Personally, I love ice cream and shaved ice, so I eat them all year long, regardless of the season. (Laugh) What can I say, Tamanoi Beya is a great place to be! Why? Well, here we have an ice-making machine and an ice shaver. We can eat all the shaved ice we want! We can even eat them during the winter. What a great life! Yummy! Thank you very much! Gochisosama! madorosumaru 6 Posted September 28, 2006 09/22/06 Shibuya Watching Sumo Good evening. This is Ikeda! The picture is of Shibuya watching the sumo telecast. We are all watching TV together, but only Shibuya is sitting up close. (Laugh) To watch the bouts and study the finer points of sumo . . . Would that be the secret to becoming stronger? In any case, Shibuya is transfixed in front of the set. However, right before him is . . . a pile of Yakult drinks and yogurt that the sales rep had just unloaded on him!! (Laugh) He seems to be watching sumo intently, but all the while, he is almost impulsively gobbling up all that yogurt! How much bigger does this kid intend to get? Hey, Shibuya-kun. You better watch out. There is something called overeating! madorosumaru 6 Posted October 5, 2006 (edited) 10/02/06 Long Time No See Hello! This is Tooyama. It's been a while since my last update. Keiko started again today in preparation for next basho. We are working up a sweat, getting back in shape after a week's break. It was only a light workout today. Starting tomorrow, we will resume regular keiko. The picture above is from the time we were off. Azure Seas and White Sand . . . and Blue Skies above. Whose back is that we see? At the web site of T-shirtya.com, we found an interesting article in their staff blog. Go take a look. I've mentioned it before but there is also a blog by an employee named Shota-kun, who writes interesting things in his blog called, "58-days on a Goya Diet." Take a look at that, too. BTW, the photo is from the Okinawa trip that we took after the basho. I will write more details at a later date. Bye Bye, Additional Info: We just heard from Okinawa that there is a shocking photo at musician Isamu Shimoji's blog. So, we immediately checked it out. What a surprise! It made me very happy. Shimoji-san, thank you very much!!! madorosumaru 6 Posted October 8, 2006 10/06/06 Some Pictures from Okinawa Good evening! This is Tooyama. I just uploaded some photos from the Okinawa trip to the Tamanoi Homepage. Please go take a look. Tamanoi Beya Homepage, Part 1 Part 2 Tamanoi Beya Notes: In Part 2, Toshinyama dejectedly leaves the group to go on his official mission to Brazil. Ahh, the sacrifices a toriteki has to make to spread The Word. The others go fishing. The ozeki lands a coupla big ones! Amanowaka (#49) hooks a little cutie. The catch of the day immediately become sashimi when they get back on shore. A lot of booze and hours under the burning sun make Isoazuma have delusions that he should be the next yokozuna, not Hakuho, the Unready. Amanowaka lets his hair down and pretends he is a winsome wakai ama, a seductive siren? to Tochiazuma. -------------------- 「世界の相撲ファンのみなさん、 これからも宜しくお願いします!」- 東桜山 "Sumo fans from around the world, I hope for continued good relationship in the future." - Tooyama
madorosumaru 6 Posted October 14, 2006 10/09/06 Information for 2nd Annual Tamanoi Festival Hello! This is Tooyama! It was such nice weather yesterday and today! I would like to make an announcement! Next Sunday, the 15th! The Second Annual Tamanoi Festival Will be Held! Last time, it was held in December as part of the first anniversary of the heya move, but this time, due to scheduling reasons, we will have it in October. As in the case of last year, there will be a children's sumo tournament at the keiko-ba. Rikishi from the heya will be operating food stands in the adjoining parking lot. The picture shows Ikeda and Isoazuma manning the chocolate-covered banana stand at last year's festival. (Eat your heart out, Wimbledon, with your effetely snobbish strawberries and cream.) The Tamanoi Festival is held for the sake of the children, but we welcome the participation of members of the koenkai and Tamanoi Beya fans. Those interested should feel free to register by e-mail. By the way, registration for the sumo tournament is now closed. Neighborhood elementary schools were our primary targets and when the number of particpants surpassed 200, we had to close the registration. On the day of the event, food stands will only accept tickets. There will be no cash transactions. Children that participate in the tournament will recieve 10 tickets each as part of their registration packet. There is a limit to the availability of the tickets so please purchase them through e-mail. You can buy a strip of 10 tickets for 1000 yen. We will be using the heya parking lot for the festival food stands, so please use alternative means of transportation. We are looking forward to your participation. As for the time, the tournament will begin at around 9 a.m. and the food stands will open at 10! madorosumaru 6 Posted October 17, 2006 10/13/06 Undokai Hello! This is Tooyama! The other day, we were invited to participate in Sonoda Hospital's undokai in Adachi-ku. The photo shows a bunch of rikishi doing shikiri at the start line. From the left: Kadowake, Oazuma, Shibuya, Ikeda. Obscured in the background is Amanowaka. Oazuma and Shibuya crawling under a net, the first challenge in the obstacle course. Shibuya getting all tangled up in the net. Karatsuumi and Isoazuma in the "Centipede Race." Tokiryu and Kadowake participating in the rope pull. The two showing off their "game face." Tokiryu and Kadowake pulling the rope with all their might. Shibuya is pulling the rope along with Oyakata and Amanowaka. Treating everyone to chanko at lunch. Tochiazuma-zeki serving chanko. (Right) Tochiazuma-zeki cheering on the rope pullers. No one, I mean no one, can top this guy as a showman--Amanowaka. (Reminiscent of De Niro and his "mannary glands" in "Meet the Fockers." Shibuya "casing the oden joint." The weather was great. It was a really enjoyable undokai! Thank you for registering for the Tamanoi Festival. For those who have not yet registered, we will end registration at 17:00 on Saturday (10/14). Tamanoi Festival will begin at around 9 a.m., but the general public will not be admitted until 12 noon. Only the tournament paricipants, koenkai members, and those who have registered from the HP will be admitted at 9 a.m. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. madorosumaru 6 Posted October 17, 2006 10/16/06 Tamanoi Festival Hello! This is Tooyama. The 2nd Annual Tamanoi Festival was held yesterday, and there was a large turnout of people. On the dohyo inside, we held a children's sumo tournament with rikishi standing by to take care of the kids. We asked amateur sumo referees to act as gyoji. Outside, there were plenty of booths attracting a large crowd. The people who volunteered to help out were all wearing yellow Tamanoi T-shirts, so the customers were commenting, "It's just like the 24 Hour Television Show." (Laugh) Karatsuumi and Ikeda making chocolate-covered bananas. Kadowake is in the background. The kids loved the chocolate bananas!! Tokiryu, Hoshiazuma and Ikinoshima cooking chanko in a huge pot. The chanko was also a big favorite and was the first to be sold out. This time, I was in charge of the tickets. Tochiazuma-zeki making yo-yos at the Yo-Yo Corner. Then, there was the award ceremony for the sumo tournament. Here we see the children receiving medals from Tochiazuma-zeki. Thank you all for participating! Tamanoi Beya Note: According to Sanspo, approximately 600 people attended the festival. Tochiazuma was all smiles: "I didn't think so many people would show up." -------------------- 「世界の相撲ファンのみなさん、 これからも宜しくお願いします!」- 東桜山 "Sumo fans from around the world, I hope for continued good relationship in the future." - Tooyama
madorosumaru 6 Posted October 19, 2006 10/18/06 Free Time Hello! This is Tooyama. Today's picture is a scene from the "Big Room" last night. Recently, sumo-san all seem to be hung up on PSP games. They bunch up their futon and pile up on each other as they engross themselves in these games. From time to time, they would holler, "Arghh!" or "Shoot!" I found their behavior rather amusing so I took the picture with my cell phone camera. They really do get intense when it comes to competing with one another. When we're done with asageiko, weight-training, chanko duties, etc., we are basically free to do what we want in the evenings. Some would rent DVDs or go out for a few drinks. Other rikishi would play games or even go to bed early. Here is another photo. Yoshiazuma-san is receiving a trophy and prize money from Omusashi-san of Musashigawa Beya. What is this award for, you may ask . . . It's for winning First Prize in the recently-held 2nd Annual Fujishima Cup (former Musoyama-zeki) Bowling Tournament. It's quite rare to get together with other heya to do something like bowling, so it was different and very enjoyable. The daily keiko is awfully tough, so it's important to have pleasant moments like these. Today, I wrote about a few things we do during our free time. Tamanoi Beya Note: Some more pitctures of the bowling tournament from the Musashigawa Beya Blog. --------------------- 「世界の相撲ファンのみなさん、 これからも宜しくお願いします!」- 東桜山 "Sumo fans from around the world, I hope for continued good relationship in the future." - Tooyama
