Zentoryu 154 Posted July 24, 2005 (standings in the next post down) MAKUUCHI: Konizan used a strong final three days to slip past Rannohana and capture the Makuuchi Yusho on the final day. Congratulations to the M11w for this impressive come from behind win. Rannohana settles for a strong Jun-Yusho. Ozeki Kintamyama, Ulsimitsuki and Maguroyama were all Kadoban heading into this basho. Of those three, only Maguroyama was able to pull out a KK and save his rank. Kintamayama and Ulsimitsuki will be returning to Sekiwake next basho. With the two demoted Ozeki and not very many MK among the other Sanyaku, we will once again have a top-heavy banzuke for next basho. Heitaikai, Kofuji and Hoshifransu are the only certain demotions to Juryo, with Fujisan and Daninowaka hanging by a thread. Non-kosho abscences will effect how the rest of the banzuke is put together. JURYO: Konosato barely edges Toljokinodo and Tamanaogijima to capture the Juryo Yusho and secure a trip to Makuuchi. Norizo and Igiski are locks for promotion to the top division, with Mariohana having a very good chance as well depending on how things shake out in Makuuchi. There's an interesting situation developing at the tail end of the Juryo banzuke with a number of rikishi having demotable records, but few rikishi from Makushita available to replace them. And thats not even bringing the non-kosho abscences into the picture. MAKUSHITA: No scoring record this time around, but still an exciting finish none the less. Ms29 Mishu captures the Yusho, edging Mariomaru by 14 points. Few of the top ranking Makushita achieved KK, meaning we may have to reach a little further past Ms5 for Juryo promotion candidates. JONOKUCHI: On a day when the average score in Jonokuchi was only 75 points, Empiryu was the only player in the division to score 100. In fact, the Jk2w outscored Iwakosato by 44 points, making up an 8 point defecit heading into the senshuraku. As a result, Empiryu captures the Jonokuchi Yusho and will see a promotion into high Makushita next basho. For Iwakosato, this was a bitter pill to swallow. The Jk9e had led the division for most of the basho, but fell victim to Empiryu's big final day. Some consolation will come from a promotion to mid-Makushita.
