madorosumaru 7 Posted July 18, 2005 Three top rikishi were knocked out of the basho in the last few days. Here are some noteworthy comments: Chiyotaikai: (Sounding like a broken record) I am injured so there isn't much I can do. At my age (29), there is no sense forcing myself to do keiko. My oyakata, however, called me a wimp. Kokonoe Oyaka: (Tough as nails) That was some ugly sumo this basho. Even the [bouts] he won were out of luck. Tell me, how much keiko did the guy do this past year? He'll probably be a [cooked turkey] by Aki Basho. Hakuho: (On his first major injury and kyujo) I can't put any weight on my foot. It kept throbbing all night and I couldn't sleep. There's nothing wrong with ligament or bone. It feels like I had twisted it. I am going to start moving it little by little and if it responds, I would like to return before the end of the basho. Damn, am I [po'd]. Miyabiyama: (On fellow behemoth Iwaki's kyujo) It's sort of sad and lonely. Now, I am the number 1 [in weight] by default. There's no fun [or challenge] in that. * * * An ominous promise: Asashoryu: (To the assembled media) Well, fellas, it looks like, before Aki Basho, I will be going to Sadogadake Beya for de-geiko. (Running over the other guy...) (Enjoying a beer...)
Asashosakari 20,287 Posted July 18, 2005 The real broken record seems to be Kokonoe. Seriously, he isn't even available for his deshi to talk to him (from the Day 8 rikishi talk - Chiyotaikai: "I haven't been able to contact the shisho ...") but he has plenty of time to beat up on him in press interviews? I'm sorry, but what an asshole.

Asashosakari 20,287 Posted July 18, 2005 Hmm... you really did believe Chiyotaikai when he said that? I didn't... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Who knows...but there's plenty of evidence that their relationship is basically zero at this point, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's true. Not to thread-hijack, but I'm starting to have serious doubts that Chiyotaikai will end up as an affiliated oyakata at Kokonoe-beya after he retires. I just don't see him putting up with that stuff when he isn't in a junior position anymore.
Zentoryu 154 Posted July 18, 2005 I just don't see him putting up with that stuff when he isn't in a junior position anymore. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He'll always be junior to Kokonoe for as long as he remains in the Kyokai. (Nodding yes...) But you are probably right, he may be looking to get as far away from his shisho as possible.

madorosumaru 7 Posted July 18, 2005 UP AND DOWN THE FOOD CHAIN Earlier in the basho, Asashoryu waxed nostalgic about his high school days and how he admired the physique of the High School Yokozuna Uchida, now a well-known blogger-meister. He then went out and promptly whupped Futeno's butt. Yesterday, Futeno was on the other side of the deja vu story. Reminiscing about his college days, he said, "He was my senpai and an yokozuna-like presence as an amateur." He then went out and promptly whupped Kotomitsuki's butt. * * * Media: You've won five in a row. Do you consider yourself to be a part of the yusho race? Roboamoeba: No way. No way. I don't know anything about such things. A lesser being like me can't be concerned about things like that.

madorosumaru 7 Posted July 19, 2005 (edited) HE MAY BE AN AMOEBA BUT HE'S A NICE ONE Robocop has been hot. He used the venerable "Railroad Track" to force out the newly-goonified Hakurozan with Shinkansen speed. What happened after the conclusion of the bout has been discussed ad nauseam in another thread. Any thought on what the rookie did, Robo? "Well, I think he was fighting desperately with all his might, just like me," Sakari said thoughtlfully in defense of his opponent's boorish behavior. Earlier in the basho, Robo was slapped in the face by Jumonji and suffered cuts in his mouth requiring a number of stitches--too many to count in his hazy state. Until the sutures are removed, he is not permitted to drink. He is also not allowed to eat any spicy food. As a result, he had to forgo his annual trip to his favorite fish restaurant. "Even shoyu hurts my mouth." Instead, he is relegated to playing computer games in his room each and every night. Alas, just as his cuts were healing, harite by Hakurozan popped the stitches. "Well, I guess it's nothing compared to those that are kyujo," he said philosophically. Edited July 19, 2005 by madorosumaru
