There have been steroids etc. topics on forum before but this was never screened yet that what is your personal estimation of the prevalence at sekitori level?

Educated guess, uneducated guess, no matter what, just give your honest estimation. Would be interesting to see the results.

Since You asked for Sekitori, it's a bit difficult to guess. There will always be a bunch of newcomers who might not have had the means to get used to (by?) that, i.e. the "clean ones".

Ask for Makuuchi and I'll go with the top answer.

I'm have a feeling it's 90-100 using various doping* (including steroids. In sumo mostly steroids). The number may seem shockingly high to some, but I believe it's a number that's very normal for most professional sports. It's simply whether we like it or not a logic part of sport on the highest level.

*On WADA's list

something that I'm not sure has been brought up in this most recent steroid thread is: If indeed there are folks using steroids, then why don't we see the stereotypical "bulking up" of muscles and lowered body fat ratio. One of the side effects of steroid use is a lowering of body fat. I've heard of women who unwisely use it as a "diet aide."

But there is major bulking up of muscles in sumo. Just underneath the surface and the relative lack of weight training doesn't shape the muscles the same way as with bodybuilders for example but the size of their muscles is unnaturally huge. Look at many heavy weight powerlifters. They are not necessarily bulked up in a stereotypical way despite massive steroid use.

Is there any testing of any kind? is the subject open to disscussion at all? I've tried to look at their eyes and so, but have seen nothing there. Hmm, this rules out nothing of course. Am I a bit naive voting "less than 10%"? Could be, could be.

I'm pretty sure there is no testing at all.

I voted 10 to 20 but the more I think about it the more I suspect it may be even higher. It's interesting to note that less than 5% think there is no steroid use at all, and that 90 - 100% is the most common answer.

One question I wonder about is exactly how much of an advantage would a steroid-taker have over a non-steroid taker, assuming basic equality to begin with?

If the answer is "a very big advantge" then I think the percentage is probably high. Because non-steroid takers would not rise very high in the ranks.

Another question is, how easy would it be for a wrestler to get steroids in Japan, and also to take them without getting caught by other heya-mates or the like?

Also, if it gives a big advantage, and wrestlers suspect that others do it and think that it will give a big advantage, and also there's a lot of money at stake and no official policy to stop it and test for it, then it's simply human nature, for many people, to do it. It's like leaving a pile of money sitting around in plain view of passers-by with no one to guard it. Even normally honest people would be tempted to take it in such a situation, not to mention people who are normally less than honest.
