Kintamayama 42,781 Posted January 6, 2005 (edited) Asashouryuu missed the YDC soken yesterday due to a fever. It was the first time he missed a soken since becoming Yokozuna. The YDC members were not pleased, to say the least. "Fever? He should take better care of himself. He knows he is the sole Yokozuna and as such, has a heavy responsibility. It looks like he will be totally unprepared for the coming Basho, and that is discourteous towards the fans", said one of its members. Today, he performed the traditional Dohyo-iri at the Meiji Jingu shrine. "On the fourth I had a fever, and on the morning of the Soken it went up to 39 degrees (102.2). My tonsils were completely white. Today, my fever is down to 37.6 degrees(99.6). I could not move my body. If I would have participated in the Soken in such a state I would have been criticised.. I'm just a human being. As much as I would like to do my best, I just can't do anything when I'm sick, " said Asa. It is now 9 days since the last time he entered a dohyo. "I know. I haven't done any keiko at all. My balance is bad. I'll get ready from here on. Just watch me!!", he summed up. Takasago Oyakata wasn't thrilled either. "It's the time of the year where there are a lot of events. The Soken, dohyo-iri and other things-the Yokozuna preparing himself physically for these events is a natural given. I'll have to repeat this to him..", he said. Just two days ago, the papers were calling him an "honor student" for starting off the year with the tsunauchi and not repeating last New year's problems.. Now, they say he is back at square one with his behaviour. YDC members not pleased. Not pleased at all. Edited January 6, 2005 by Kintamayama

Jonosuke 28 Posted January 6, 2005 I think it's just like taking a week vacation and taking a couple of days off work because you got sick...and when you go back to work and that's just about what everyone is probably thinking. Since the Soken was not open to public, I don't see why missing it is "discourteous to the fans." I don't have any information which members were there on this one but YDC memebers do not show up for one of these every time except Ms Uchidate. But having said this, Asashoryu being a lone yokozuna needs to be more aware of his responsibility. He admits he is not a superman so he should make one of these trips when so many events are not being scheduled. He certainly could have come back a little earlier from his trip in my view. Total bullcrap, IMHO, be we shall see.. Edited January 6, 2005 by Kintamayama
Kintamayama 42,781 Posted January 7, 2005 (edited) In the morning, he had a keiko session with Asasekiryuu and others-21 bouts, still with a light fever. The dohyo iri at Meiji Jingu was done in 3 degrees centigrade (37 F) and rainy weather with a crowd of 2300 people. "I'm hot blooded so no problem there", he joked. Sasanishiki 57 Posted January 7, 2005 Asa said "I feel like I can take on anyone on shonichi so come and get me! There are two days left, so I'll be fine." He added "I felt that I had fighting spirit especially because it was cold. I did the dohyo-iri while praying for a year with no injury and that my sumo will get better." Kintamayama 42,781 Posted January 8, 2005 FYI: 1.)Asashouryuu still had a fever this morning-37.8 centigrade (100 F). 2.) His ring finger is still hurting. 3.) He complained of pain in both of his wrists this morning. 4.) He had only one keiko session this year, against guys in his own heya. 5.) He had only one keiko session against Sekitori from other domains since November 28th. Things that make you go hmm.
