Kintamayama 47,297 Posted November 23, 2004 ara the whole thing was handbags at dawnit was funny more than anything. don't you see the same thing in ice hockey every week with no fuss mind you i don't like or follow both sports so who am i to say. Big difference, and you know it.. Don't make a mistake and try to comment on sports you yourself say you don't care about. People who do care about them might take offense. Just like we scramble to choke every idiot who starts the "fat guys with diapers" routine, some people may want to throttle and grottle you for deriding their "other" favorite sport. Just a friendly observation from a guy who doesn't have a tatoo, but has respect for other animals.
Zentoryu 154 Posted November 23, 2004 (edited) don't you see the same thing in ice hockey every week with no fuss Actually no. If you mean fans attacking players, or players going into the stands. It's kind of hard to do when there is a big sheet of glass seperating the crowd from the player benches. This isn't to say it hasn't ever happened before, but there are only two occasions that I can even think of and both were a long time ago. Kintamayama 47,297 Posted November 23, 2004 must be cos its the wee hours but that comment is going way over my head. all i can say is huh?and moti while we are at it, where in my post did i deride anything? ;-) just said i didn't like it. not excessive, just a fact. What I'm trying to say with my terrible English is don't try to compare sports you said yourself you know nothing about. That's deriding to a sports fan that does. Much like football (soccer). You and I (I assume) think it's great, but 200 million Americans think it's boring. When I hear people say that, it pisses me off.. Doesn't it piss you off as well?? The animal part was a joke. No big deal..Forget it..

To be Honest, I just don't understand the attraction. It doesn't make any sense to me. Sorry. (I am not worthy...)

Kintamayama 47,297 Posted November 24, 2004 (edited) speaking of soccer. do you know the dates of the israel-ireland games? holding off on gloating over the draw in paris till we play the french again Mid-March here, four days later-we play the French-two home games in four days.. I hear nearly 5000 Irish fans are expected to arrive. First time any visiting team's fans are that numerous. Instead of "getting ready for the rowdy fans", Tel-Aviv will be holding an Irish Festival in the streets, renaming a street "Ireland" and opening impromptu street pubs for the fans. The match should be interesting too.. Edited November 24, 2004 by Kintamayama
Faustonowaka 160 Posted November 24, 2004 (edited) Just one thing I'd like to say: I play basketball (on a pretty low level, but still) and I too find what happened in Detroit a disgrace for the sport. But that's no reason to begin and hack on the sport like it is played by idiots and is inferior. Remember that NBA players are excellent athletes, they have to play 82 games in a span of 6 months and it takes a LOT of training to get there. I agree they are overpayed, but if I was offered a $ 5.000.000 contract I would sign it!! I can understand that someone loses it (like Artest) but how would ANYBODY react in this situation??? And an other thing: to my knowledge, this is the first time such an incident occured in basketball. Compared to soccer, where fans go out and destroy bars, cars and assault people who have nothing to do with the sport (and believe me, as a policeman I have seen that more than enough)... I have respect for all sports, even those of wich i know NOTHING at all, because I know how difficult it is to reach the top in ANY kind of sport and will not go and say idiot things about something I now nothing of (eg. all snooker players are gay or all cyclists use drugs,... or something moronic like that). It happened, they got punished, get over it!! GO KAIOU (Applauding...) Edited November 24, 2004 by Faustonowaka

sekihiryu 51 Posted December 11, 2004 Pacers players Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, David Harrison and Anthony Johnson were charged Wednesday with single counts of assault and battery, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of about three months in jail and a fine of up to $500. Jermaine O'Neal, a three-time NBA All-Star, was charged with two counts of assault and battery for his actions in the brawl at the end of a game last month. Five fans were charged with misdemeanor assault and battery, including Pistons star Ben Wallace's brother, David. Fan Bryant Jackson also was charged with felony assault for throwing a chair. That crime is punishable by up to four years in prison, but he could get up to eight years because he has prior convictions, Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca said. $500 dollars, wow what a slap on the wrist that is for players with multimillion dollar contracts. Since Artest is out for the season, make the piece of trash sit a jail for 3 months. If I were the NBA commisioner I would have banned him for life, end of story - LIFE. Ask Pete Rose what a life ban feels like. Artest is a disgrace. The NBA is a gutless. If a professional rugby player would have done that - life ban for sure and the civil charges of assault. Attack a ref in Rugby and get you will get yourself a 5year to life ban from the game ( in NZ anyway) Stern came out with harse words about the brawl, but then backed it up with lightweight punishment. How about Sprewell verbally abusing fans and getting a one game suspension. Pathetic. NBA punks get paid way too much money and cant even play that well, I tuned out of the NBA a long time ago. :-S
Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted December 11, 2004 A harsh and incompetent post. As you admitted, you don't know much of the NBA. Oh, and a life ban at the age when Pete Rose got it, feels tumultously different to me than getting it at Artest' age. I know that Artest is 25, how old was Rose, you certainly can enlighten me? 50? Comparing this feels, hmm, unwarranted. And, lightweight punishment? This is the longest ban ever in the NBA. Well, while we are getting on sports we don't know anything about... are you sure that NZ rugby is free from any scandals? How about drugs or steroids? MLB surely isn't exactly the same since BALCO...
Zentoryu 154 Posted December 11, 2004 Stern came out with harse words about the brawl, but then backed it up with lightweight punishment. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I would hardly call a season suspension without pay to be lightweight. These millionaires are losing a ton of money here and that has gone a long way towards satisfying an angry public. Yeah, the legal fines are a slap on the wrist, but those fines were the best that could be gotten under a law that was most likely written for the common man. sekihiryu 51 Posted December 11, 2004 .Well, while we are getting on sports we don't know anything about... are you sure that NZ rugby is free from any scandals? How about drugs or steroids? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sports I dont know anything about? I have played basketball since I was 8 years old, I know the game very well thank you very much, I used to be a follower of the NBA, what I said that I "tuned out" of the NBA in recent years. Rugby has a had a few minor scandals, no biggies and certainly no player charging the stands. The ugliest incident in NZ rugby was the 1981 South African Tour to NZ. The anti aparthied protests were a massive, the tour split the country and divided friends. It had nothing at all to do about sport - purely politics. One game was cancelled as about fifty protestors invaded the pitch after pulling down a fence, enraged rugby spectators to lash out at the protestors, it was lucky that no one was killed, riot police escorted the protestors away as missiles (anything the oculd get there hands on were hurled from the spectators). Back to the NBA, I gave up on it a while back, and it made me laugh to see the US teams get embarrased and put in their place at the Olympics and the 2002 World Championships, even NZ finished higher placed than the US. As far Ron Artest the man is a mongrel, he was even before he snapped in Detroit. He has got some serious issues, one year was too short for me US pro sports have issues in general, it has lost the plot, players paid too much, far too much the whole lot of them, no one deserves 25million a year to play a game when teachers, police officers, nurses et all are getting shafted for peanuts....... But then again its the least of the problems in that country. I am sticking to sumo, where there is some sense of sanity left.

European premier footballers aren't exactly living in poverty either. There are problems of overpaid athletes making millions in almost every single major sport in the world (Like David Beckham. I'm not comparing him to Artest, BTW, just using him as an example of an overpaid athlete). The USA isn't the only place where your going to find poor behaving pro athletes. It happens all over.
