Yamanashi 4,085 Posted July 12 48 minutes ago, Tigerboy1966 said: The ages, ranks, thing is important. WTK was a 28-year-old sekiwake: Endo is a 34-year-old M7. Endo is two kyujo away from being an unsalaried 35-year-old and I don't think he'll fancy that. Since his last 0-for in May 2023, he's 93-87, but that includes a 12-3 ranked at J3. Matchwise, he's17-28 against opponents ranked higher than M8. His equilibrium point seems to be at about M10 right now. He's got a kabu, and it's unrealistic to think "he's just one knee job away from san'yaku!" He can get a salary for a couple more basho (and keep cashing those kinboshi checks!), then retire without shame.

Different ages, ranks, etc., I know, but if it's something he can heal from and he wants to keep fighting, it might be worth taking a whack at a makushita basho and seeing if he can get his salary back quickly. Different ages, different situations indeed. WTK was in his prime when he blew his ACL while Endo should be in the "one major injury away from retirement" camp.

Yubinhaad 11,975 Posted July 13 (edited) Shikimori Tomosaburo is back in action after a leg muscle injury sustained in a fall from the dohyo last basho. On 11/07/2025 at 05:44, Asashosakari said: Jd60e Sanukiryu (Otowayama) The heya reports a knee injury for him, and also a late one for recently-recruited Ms50w Kakueizan, so expect a fusenpai in his scheduled bout tomorrow. Koorifuu 1,121 Posted July 14 (edited) RE Fujiizumi's previous 3 years off. I'm sorry I forgot whom, but it was either Akinomaki or Asashosakari who mentioned this a while ago. Apparently Fujiizumi was allowed to go back to his family with a view on a full recovery from his previous ailments. Edited July 14 by Koorifuu
Yubinhaad 11,975 Posted July 14 While one rikishi begins his basho a bit late, eight more are withdrawing. Entering: Sd67e Okada Withdrawing: Ms50w Kakueizan (fusenpai Day 2) - as mentioned a couple of posts up, a knee injury sustained in keiko right before the basho. Sd3e Aron (fusenpai Day 2) Sd71w Takashoki (fusenpai Day 2) Jd6e Ryubumaru (fusenpai Day 2) - Musashigawa-beya reports he is suffering from cellulitis. Jd70e Tensei (fusenpai Day 2) Jd105w Okuniyama (fusenpai Day 1) Jk9e Uchiumi Jk17w Minatoryu (fusenpai Day 2) (Three of the rikishi who changed their shikona for this basho are now on the sidelines ) Sd64w Hokutoshu also had a fusenpai on Day 1 but hasn't withdrawn from the basho. Lastly, maybe it was my imagination but Hakuoho seemed to be favouring his left arm after his bout today.
maglor 132 Posted July 14 If I was a Jonidan rikishi scheduled to fight Kazuma who's 200kg and knows how to use it, I think my body might shut down beforehand too.

And I'm seeing Meisei leaving the building. He fell awkwardly and it seemed like he was hoping the monoii would not result in a torinaoshi..But then he lost . He seemed to get back up on the dohyo very gingerly. Couple that with his back pains he had at the beginning of the month and I feel a kyujo coming. He rejoined the heya before the basho - 3 years blank, but still age 20. Herniated disk and right knee injury: he was at home to cure the injuries, Nishikido was in contact with him every other day, he always wanted to return and let his hair stay long. 1
Oskanohana 364 Posted July 15 I saw that Nobehara had to stop mid-bout in his match vs Yoshii and couldn't stand on his left leg at all. He had to be helped out, so I guess we'll see him tomorrow on the kyujo list. That or he asks Takerufuji for his magic tape.
Akinomaki 41,849 Posted July 16 The NSK today published a rare corrected medical certificate for Nabatame: left knee ACL injury, right knee meniscus inside damage, about 2 months of hospital treatment necessary. On the 13th, they had announced a right knee ACL injury (and surgery) o o - though the heya had reported it correctly On 11/07/2025 at 17:17, Asashosakari said: from the source via the most recent Futagoyama Youtube video (link goes to the relevant section): Surgery on his left knee for a major procedure involving a ligament transplant, out for probably four tournaments

Yubinhaad 11,975 Posted July 16 Three in, three out ahead of Day 5 in the lower divisions. Entering/Returning: Jd6e Ryubumaru (fusenpai Day 2, withdrew Day 3) Jd70e Tensei (fusenpai Day 2, withdrew Day 3) Jk26w Chiyoryusei Withdrawing: Ms19e Nobehara - as implied a few posts up, he seems to have suffered a left ankle injury in his last bout. Jd43w Miyafuji Jk19e Higohikari - a hard fall from the dohyo in his last bout, although he was able to get up and walk off unaided as far as I could tell. 2

The early reports didn't have anything, but news has been coming in now. In comments to the press, reported by Nikkan, Tatsunami-oyakata stated that the left big toe that Hoshoryu had trouble with in training before the basho seemingly took another critical hit in the Aonishiki bout. It's currently painful to the touch, with internal bleeding and possibly a bone fracture somewhere. He went to the hospital this afternoon, although the official medical certificate wasn't available yet when the interview took place. It's there now, though (via Sponichi): One month of rest and treatment for a sprained MTP joint at the left big toe and a bone contusion of the toe itself. Tigerboy1966 1,639 Posted July 17 I think that may be the last we see of Hidenoumi in maku'uchi. I hope he doesn't retire just yet as he only needs six more basho in juryo to set the all-time record for appearances in the second division.
