So be glad with your result, it would have been even worse with more new players. Ganzohnesushi 1
Reonito 1,784 Posted June 30 11 hours ago, Wakawakawaka said: That is true, but if Kusano ended 10-5 would he not have landed at the same spot? Those 3 extra wins effectively meant nothing. There are ceilings at various boundaries. Say both sekiwake go KK, both komusubi go MK, M1e goes 11-4, M1w goes 8-7, no other good K candidates, so they end up at K1e and K1w. M1e would have ended up in the same spot if he'd gone 8-7, so those 3 wins effectively mean nothing.

Any fix, like making the M1e 11-4 an S2, could cause a domino effect throughout the whole division. Kusano could have been placed at M13e, overtaking Shodai and Churanoumi without causing either to be overdemoted. It would acknowledge his greatly superior rank/record combo over Fujinokawa, with no adverse side-effects. In the end though the banzuke committee is obviously not listening to me though, so I'm just arguing with myself.
Reonito 1,784 Posted June 30 Yeah this is obviously a softer and more subjective ceiling: "we can't start placing juryo guys until everyone with reasonable rank/record combos in makuuchi has been placed." It's worked very differently in the past, but the general trend recently, and with the current committee in particular, has been to increasingly favor higher rank and incumbency, with extreme results like Nishikifuji staying in the top division after 6-9 from lowest rank, and now Takayasu breaking decades of precedent.
