Invitation to Play GTB - July 2025 - 334 entries. RESULTS!!

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

It's that time of the year again. Time to play a fantasy sumo game. It's  GTB, or "Guess the Banzuke". .

This is a formal invitation to play the "Guess the Banzuke" game. 27 years, 164 bashos or so. Please play. It's free for all, for now.

Game rules: Guess the Banzuke. Simple. You get two points for a bulls-eye and one point for just getting the rank right. You get no points for thinking Oonosato couldn't do it in his 13th basho. Tiebreakers - Most total guesses, then we check the banzuke backwards - getting the lower half right will be important.  The most correct guesses in the last ten places will win the tiebreaker. If still tied we go up a ranking at a time like a penalty shootout. If still tied, the earliest entry wins. If still tied, the player who says "ni" wins. It's up to you to check if you are on the list of entries. It's going to be your fault if you don't notice that your entry went missing in the Internet void. No late entries will be expected or accepted. Those are the rules, and the rules will never be changed.

For rules, standings and the secret to life: http://www.dichne.com/Guess.htm

For the nifty entry form, which will hopefully continue to do what it's intended to do :http://sumodb.sumogames.de/gtb/GTBEntry.aspx

For Chiyotasuke's incredible helper: https://gtbhelper.vercel.app

For the "new" archives:http://sumodb.sumogames.de/gtb/gtbarchive.aspx

See if you are on the entry list: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/gtb/GTBEntryList.aspx

Deadline: Monday, June 23rd, 2025  at 18:00 GMT ("Garnicht Mit Traube") - PLEASE NOTE-THIS IS ONE WEEK BEFORE THE OFFICIAL BANZUKE ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Special thanks to showrunners Andoreasu, Wizard Doitsuyama for everything else, and all of you who wish to participate

***MESSAGE: Please note that as you probably found out by now, the confirmation e-mail thing is not working, so I suggest a screen capture for now for those of you who wish to save their guesses.

I continue to mirror the career of Nishikigi. After benefiting from a run of solid results and some banzuke luck to break into sanyaku a year ago I now find myself back in juryo again.

It's not a bad career to mirror. Still better than turning into a Daishomaru or Fujiazuma.

Two weeks to go, take away an hour or two.

Good one there.

Now presenting... another unsolicited attempt at a GTB meta-banzuke, complete with most if not all the things you hate about real banzukes!

This would be Natsu 2025 (so not taking into account the most recent basho). I have all new players starting with a TD equivalent to the last spot on the banzuke. Never had any issue with that before, but needless to say with 100+ new players, the bottom got a little crowded. Also this fashionable meta-banzuke is presented with abhorrently unfashionable double spacing because I can't get the forum to cooperate.

I'm in. New strategy. When in doubt, give the edge AGAINST your favourites to counterweight your own bias.

...and on 29 June I will find that the banzuke committee has been taken over by the Chiyoshoma fan club.

It's about 27.5 hours by my count now—18 GMT tomorrow, right?

Yup. I thought you might have other priorities right now which is why I did the update.

I just changed my entry totally last minute. Is it only me or is this one extra-hard? The top of Maegashira is a real mess?

I was quite happy with my entry. Always a bad sign.

there are several tricky areas: M4/M5, M7/M8, M11/M12, and the bottom.

That's what we see, but there is often an invisible minefield laid without warning.

100%

After Ura's placement last time, along with a few of the other recent decisions, little would surprise me.

I made one bold, but dubious choice which allowed the rest of the top Maegashira ranks to fall into place quite nicely. If I'm wrong, I'm toast. Probably a slice of toast that fell into the gap between the cupboard and the fridge, went very mouldy and stank out the kitchen before being retrieved a month later.

I think Kusano's spot can vary wildly, and I don't have any real insight how they're making that juryo decision. Seems random each time where the strong juryo contender falls in makuuchi. I saw a great opening that only created mild issues below, then found a much lower spot to put him that allowed consistent underdemotions of same-record results across makuuchi. So chances are they put him somewhere in the middle of those spots and just muck up everything.

The straightforward approach would be just to stack the divisions and treat J1e=M18w (depending on the last Makuuchi rank), right?
But this is not confirmed by history, right?
It looks like some sort of imaginary gap is between the divisions. How large is it? In the worst case for GTB, the gap is not constant but can be adjusted from time to time. Perhaps as an additional variable to improve the congestion of Rikishi in certain areas (and maybe on some ingredients of the tea the committee is drinking).

Is there a separation from the session where division exchanges are decided, and another one where, based on these decisions, the Banzuke is fully set up? Or is it the same session?

Interesting that this time there is no talk among us especially about the sanyaku, which is usually a hot subject. Unless it's obvious to everyone except me. Playing the cards close to chest this time?

I suspect that I've reordered the S1's incorrectly, but not enough precedent to say one way or the other. I'd rather swap them so I did. The rest of it should fall pretty easily, right?

If you look at the history of how high a high J debutant with a good score goes, the variability is massive. Certainly not a single arithmetic conclusion.

All the one session afaik.

I don't know if this was done in the past, but it certainly isn't now, except for computing the division exchanges and the rank order of the juryo promotions relative to each other.

The gap is certainly not constant, and the approach changes over time. Right now it seems to be, lean over backwards to give the makuuchi incumbents every possible benefit of the doubt when deciding whether to rank a juryo promotion ahead of them.

Pretty sure there's just one banzuke meeting where all of this gets hashed out.
