Start of training of the Ukrainian junior team made the news again, they stay till the 8th, but training is till the 7th. Looks like Yehor came from Nagasaki to train with his kohai.

Preparations at Terada dojo in Hachimantai, Iwate, for the 15th world youth sumo tournament  - the dojo won the team event 5 years ago. 16 members take part, they want not only a repeat of the team win, but also at last individual top results. vid:  http://newsdig.tbs.co.jp/articles/-/1716209?display=1

Training for 45 athletes of 8 foreign teams in the sumo school training institute today, for the tournament tomorrow. Hakuho instructed, with the help of Kusano, Onokura and Kawazoe (Kiho)

Kokkai came with his nephew and the team from Georgia, as the rijicho of the Georgia sumo association - he's sad that there is no rikishi from Georgia now. He was the first sekitori, Tochinoshin the last so far. He was there for the first time last year with 2, now with 3 athletes. One is the son of his younger brother, ex-Tsukasaumi o

team from Scotland (sumo is like football, the UK could have 3 teams, but only one made it)

The Ukrainian team wasn't there, they finished their training in Usa, Oita and had a farewell party on the 7th

Komatsuryu dojo won the team event again, against a strong Mongolian team in the final, which had a 2-0 lead and then lost the next 3. Shota Yamazaki from the dojo won the 5th year, Ryuga Umematsu the 6th year competition.

4th yusho in a row for 4th year Kousuke Honma (161cm, 130kg) from Tsubata town (hometown of Onosato) - but he doesn’t want to continue on that path, he aims for a white collar job.

Middle school winner Temujin Chilgun (183cm, 130kg), as 1st year at Tottori Nishi middle school, from the Tottori-city Inaba sumo dojo - he came to Japan in April last year. His dream is going into ozumo, his favourite is Asashoryu.

he had good results at the wampaku championships in primary school with the Mongolian team

6th year runner-up Mahiro Yamashiro won in the semifinal against twice as big Mongolian Temujin/Temuujin Chilgun/Chimgun (his name varies), called a yusho hope in the article.

this year sekiwake (sf), Temujin last year was komusubi (qf) https://mongolmoromoro.com/20221101/

He got a yokozuna trophy - maybe the Hakuho cup yokozuna will be the middle school yokozuna in the future, when the zenchu stops to have that. Hakuho commented about that - the NSK and the sumo federation want to provide something to replace that tournament.

Hakuho with the help of Atamifuji, Takerufuji and Hakuoho held a sumo class for the youngest and trained with the winners there

Isegahama didn't enjoy it - but he had to supervise. Asakayama from time to time joined him at the main dohyo, there was a seat for Terunofuji as well, but it remained empty - he was at more enjoyable locations: a commentator debut for him together with the NHK announcer for the finals, later replaced by Atamifuji, Takerufuji and Hakuoho. The earlier parts had the kinboshi duo as commentators, 2 other comedians were with the NHK guy at first.

Isegahama seemed especially annoyed at first as he had to hand out the winners certificates, he was used to that as top shimpan at the lower division yusho ceremonies, with the standard phrase "Same as above", but the names should be called first and then the rest is the same text,  ika doubun - he only said that, without a name (noticeable in the live stream, I can't find it in the videos).

Middle school winner in first year? That's got to be rare.

I guess so, but not as rare as at the middle school championships half a year earlier. The Hakuho cup is at the end of the school year, the third years are nearly graduated and think of the next stages.

Like the national Hirosaki tournament last week, to end the school year but actually for the new guys, without graduates.

Ah, that makes sense then. A first year beating a full lineup of 2nd and 3rd years in middle school would be quite something.

Ivanna Berezovska - woman's world champion and currently dominates women's college sumo in Japan, competing for Kyushu Joho. She is standing on an elevated platform there but is huge anyway, about 185cm/145kg (not unprecedented size for Russian/Ukrainian female competitors). Before Aonishiki turned pro they were on the same Ukranian team that came to Japan - somewhere online there is a video of them together with other team members in a Japanese culture class during that trip.

Not bothering with saying the kids' names is rather classless, but that's probably my western-lensed sunglasses...

The first time at this tournament that a first year won, even 2nd years are rare: Onosho won at the national prefectures middle school championships, but that's the only case reported, by Sponichi.

The Mongolian article gives him as T.Chilguun. 3rd at the Hakuho cup as 5th year. Now reported as 180cm, Sponichi only with 120kg - many sports papers don't care for details.
