Guess Ura's Aite - September 2024 edition

Recommended Posts

Why skip two guys who were 1-7 to go with someone 3-5 when going one more down gets you someone 6-2?  Wakatakakage vs. Endo was default match selection (surprising that they hadn't met already), so it's not like they really were forcing that instead.  Force Shonannoumi to keep being scheduled against sanyaku until he's MK if you're not going to skip him for such a weak opponent instead of going down one more to get a much more relevant opponent.

That's what I was thinking. Gonoyama just got mega-fked. The only thing I can figure is that he was the next guy in line who couldn't get made MK with a loss to Hoshoryu. It's not much of a reason, but if they were going to put words to the vibe that led to this decision (and this had to have been pure vibes), that's what I imagine they'd say. Lots of "Tobizaru was a dead body" energy there.

Dammit, I had to leave and was hoping I'd be the first to guess it when I got back.

Well, you do with the Bench torikumi, why not here?

I have been thinking about this for a few days now, and I think that I marginally disagree. I only plan one day at a time for Bench Sumo (except that I pencil in the final three matches for day 15 - which sometimes do not happen) - but with the  proviso that from the early results I get an inkling of how the basho is going, so make sure that I have got the mandatory sanyaku bouts (between 'genki' and 'ungenki'' players) out of the way as early as possible, and have freed up the genki 'sanyaku' players to face yusho hopefuls from lower down in the division in the final days. After day 3 for Bench Sumo, I never plan ahead - apart from trying my best to keep the final days' matches relevant and interesting. Does that make sense?

Indeed!

Drat, I thought they might pair the Maegashira 8-win rikishi against one another before feeding them to the sanyaku, thus giving Onosato to Ura first. I figured they might break up some of Abi's intra-sanyaku matches and give Onosato the Maegashira with the most wins on Day 15. THAT could still happen I suppose. Back to the drawing board to rework my grids.
