Come on guys, shall we really repeat all the "dead body rules"?

Tobizaru hat no influence in the movement of them both. Yes, Kotozakura technically hit the ground first mere moments before Tobizaru, but he was the active wrestler pushing his opponent outwards.

So, while there were occations where a mono-ii was held in such situations, I do understand that it does not happened in this time.

Rewatch it? Tobizaru jumped but landed back in bounds. And he was still standing there as Kotozakura faceplanted.

Disagree. Tobizaru's move put Kotozakura down, and he never lost contact to the ground.

I would agree. Tobizaru's foot is touching ground inside ring when Kotozakura touches out. Even if Tobizaru wasn't the aggressor he's the last man standing.

If Takakeisho still has the desire to continue, he needs to go full Terunofuji, take as many basho off as he needs to fully heal, and start again fresh.

Don't think he'll do that though.

I expect he will retire but might stick around and go kyujo for November, retiring when he drops to Juryo.  Start the New Year as a Oyakata.

With reaching Ozeki, 4 top division Yusho and 1 in every other division except Sadanme I think he has done everything he could have ever hoped to do as a rikishi in sumo.

Even if he returned there is zero chance he'll ever get Yokozuna.

I was watching the natto youtube channel, and people do seem quite incredulous about kotozakura's win in the comments.  To me it definitely looked like he touched the outside first.

I guess it wouldn't be Sumo without a bit of controversy hehe.

Sadogatake was relegated to head of PR after his blatant nepotism as chief of the shimpan department

Something something tentacles of influence.

The atmosphere was incredible. Shonosuke, the camera, the crowd, everyone was expecting the mono-ii... and they waited... and waited... until it finally sank in, when Kotozakura was collecting his envelopes: it wasn't going to come. It felt like 10 minutes.

Someone else posted this. It shows the back of Tobizarus foot in contact with the ground.

As if anyone would have seen that without a mono-ii, and even then it's highly debatable.

The shimpan didn't like Tobizaru's goofy sumo at the end there. Who does he think he is? Ura?

Looking at the slo-mo, that's the only evidence that would call it for Kotozakura; but it's not anywhere near obvious, and would certainly merit a monoi-i just to clarify.

I hope Sumo Chris sends someone a nice big bag of rice; he's set up for six months of material after this.

I have seen several rikishi slip w/o any obvious contact so far this basho.  They seem to occur in the far left quadrant of the dohyo (as seen from the camera in the TV feed).

Not really arguing, but I would interpret that scene as follows:

Obviously the gyoji is focused on the feet area and the tawara and in the picture he stands in the right place to see the whole sole of Tobizaru's left food while it still touching the ground thus meaning the upper part of he foot must touch the ground.

Yeah, I thought Tobizaru had obviously won live. But not a single person from a group sitting ringside thinks it's even worth another look. That call could easily determine the yusho.

Yeah, I really, really hope it doesn't.

Even in that photo, though, the top of Tobi's foot looks like it's in contact with the tawara, not the ground. I don't know if the tawara is considered the ground for purposes of that rule, but it's still a reason to talk it over. This is really the issue with a lot of questionable calls—not the outcome, but the lack of discussion when it seems impossible for all of them to be 100% in real time of who won.

So that's the new definition of "dead body"? :-P

No, just the back-up justification after "dead body" :-P

I deleted my conspiracy comment cos it was tongue-in-cheek; but no matter how you look at it the lack of a mono-ii was insane.

Had they gone to the mono-ii and still given it to Kotozakura, maybe we'd all disagree with the explanation but at least there would be one.

Anyway in reality I'm not too bothered; the wife adores Tobizaru and I like him too; but I also like me some Kotozakura and it ain't his fault.

I'm rooting for Kotozakura, and I've spent millions influencing the judging department to assure his rise to yokozuna, but I was hoping they wouldn't make it so flagrant. I should have splurged on the 'subtle promotion' package after all.

Sheesh, for some reason, my brain equated "only two Ozeki this basho" and "Takakeisho kyujo" still programmed to think of him as an Ozeki, completely forgot about Kotozakura, assumed Hoshoryu was the last match of the day (while wondering why the hell it was ending so early), turned off the TV, and promptly missed the most talked-about-match of the basho :-(
