He really ought to be punished.

RabidJohn 1,663 Posted September 19 Well that was a treat. Two titanic yotsu bouts from Wakatakakage vs Onosato and Kirishima vs Kotozakura, followed by Abi making a fool of Hoshoryu. Onosato is probably wondering how that just happened, but no shame in not being able to best Wakatakakage at a first meet. Opens up the yusho race, too. In the gaming world we refer to what Takarafuji is doing as 'noob bashing'; using his extensive experience to take advantage of the new kids. We've all done it. Good for him!

On sumo itself, that was sublime from Wakatakakage. Onosato would've probably won that matchup 9 times out of 10, but this was that one where Wakatakakage does everything he can very well and at the right time.

I have the impression that Onosato is frequently trying not to overextend. He had a fair share of luck on his side so far, but not today.
Bugman Re-Hatched 20 Posted September 19 As I watched this basho, I began (unfairly i guess), by comparing contemporary rikishi, to my memories of Harumafuji, Hakuho, Kakuryu, Kotoshogiku, Goeido, even Kisenosato, tbh in an unfavourable light. My early conclusion was that on average the wrestlers weren't as impressive as 10 years ago, but i also found that these wrestlers are actually very interesting and I began to change opinion when i started reading a little into their backgrounds, like Hoshoryu being related to Asashoryu, and Oho being related to the legendary Taiho, and so on. There seems to be many good wrestlers that can match each other, and there's no Hakuho to ruin everyone's day, as a result the outcome is more exciting. Even Onosato who has had a dominant basho was spectacularly defeated today. It's not over yet but I can safely say I've had a lot of fun, I just had to adjust the way I was viewing Sumo.

You need superhuman core stability in order to pump on the brakes & reset yourself the way he did when your frame's got roughly 180kg on it. Katooshu 3,132 Posted September 19 (edited) Incredible survival by Wakatakakage, first on the tachiai blast that sent him to the edge, then the pushdown attempt where he was nearly bent in half. He went from ragdoll to winner - up there with his playoff escape vs Takayasu. Onosato may be wondering to himself how he lost that one....he looked very explosive and I'm still inclined to pick him over Kotozakura for day 13. dingo 1,159 Posted September 19 Onosato was a bit unlucky, but I don't want to belittle Wakatakakage's part in resisting the onslaught. In the end Onosato has also been somewhat lucky in a few previous bouts so it kinda evens out. I still hope he takes the ozeki rank in style with a yusho. I don't know why he isn't being admonished more. He's on a short list of wrestlers whose intai I really look forward to.

Wakatakakage was three wins off the pace when those matches were made. He could be back with Sanyaku action on Day 14 now that he's with two again.

Imagine if they had let Tochimusashi come back after bullying Tochikamiyama out of the sport. That'd be crazy. 3 hours ago, Jakusotsu said: Don't pretend those matches weren't fixed before today's result. I don't believe in match fixing in sumo, thank you very much.
