Surgery in due course and more than six months out of action. On 28/07/2024 at 13:39, Akinomaki said: Asanoyama will have surgery likely already this month - and then about 10 months till he can return to the basho (=Natsu 2025) - as sandanme again, but much lower than the last drop. The oyakata: "Of course he wants to return" https://www.sankei.com/article/20240728-SPJEQOGMMNNCZOJKJGIGOGJ7SA/ Asanoyama had successful surgery on July 30th, 2 days after the basho. At the moment he's in hospital and in the middle of rehab. He aims to return for the Hatsu basho, full kyujo in Kyushu is certain, a 2nd restart from sandanme likely - but he is full of ambition to return to makuuchi. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202408070001278.html Edited August 8, 2024 by Akinomaki
aderechelsea 125 Posted August 8, 2024 He really wants to stay in sumo in his future. I like his persistence if he is doing it. Ozeki future will be hard to realise though. I hope he makes it. I like him. If he opens up a stable in the future i would follow his athletes' development.

Akinomaki 40,666 Posted November 9, 2024 Asanoyama is aiming for a return at the Haru basho "No need to do something unreasonable for Hatsu" - 2,3 times a week rehabilitation at a hospital continues, after surgery on the snapped left ACL end of July - heading towards becoming the first makuuchi to drop to sandanme 2 times. He takes part in training every day, doing the basics and exercises. In October, still in white, he restarted training the lower half of the body o o o oo as a expected the drop - now in black again, training on the 29th at the Kyushu location, on the 2nd was the 1 year death anniversary of the former shisho o oo o o o After rehabilitation he can walk again, has still pain when going down the stairs

Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted December 5, 2024 Unless postoperative recovery processes of newly reconstructed ACLs have somehow changed in recent years 6 months should be the time needed for the reconstructed ACL to be strong so in Asanoyama's case that would be around the end of January. Quite logical he intends to return in Haru basho. Flexibility seems quite good already. There are examples of athletes in risky sports having reinjury reasonably soon (perhaps the most prominent example was original Ronaldo) but plenty of athlete whose knee never was a problem after surgery. In sumo there can be tremendous pressure on ACL in defensive situations as both the victim and attacker can generate massive power. I am sure reconstructed ACL would be timid and stressed out on the dohyo if it had a mind of his own. Female athletes often get new ACL injury because it is dangerous to be a woman's ACL much the same way it is dangerous to be woman's liver when primary biliary cholagitis is searching for another new liver to reside at. ACL injury risk and PBC are some of the many dangerous aspects of being a woman.
Akinomaki 40,666 Posted December 23, 2024 (edited) Asanoyama on the 21st at the heya did the basics and butsukari-geiko, both pushing and lending his chest. That week he restarted this keiko, with a protector for the left leg. Kyujo next basho and drop to sandanme is unavoidable. The intai of Onosho gave him a feeling of desolation, he doesn't want to quit due to injury without returning to the dohyo. So far nobody dropped twice from makuuchi to sandanme and then returned to makuuchi. About 2024: "The worst. Only being there all days for Haru, and then kyujo." o Edited December 23, 2024 by Akinomaki
Akinomaki 40,666 Posted December 28, 2024 Asanoyama today did the basics and lent his chest for butsukari-geiko to Asakoryu and others. As the kanji to represent his year he picked naku 泣 - cry - because he suffered greatly ( nakasareru) from injuries. oo o o o
Kintamayama 45,345 Posted February 2 (edited) Asanoyama declares he is raring to go for March. Takasago-beya moved to its new premises and many visitors came, including ex-Asasohuryuu. "This is my last chance so I will do my best. The oyakata has built an excellent new heya for us so I feel I need to start from scratch and do my best. It's really frustrating that the new Yokozuna is born and I couldn't face him.. I'm raring to go out there- I feel as if I don't belong anymore.." he said. Later during his training he was seen getting some advice from ex-Asasohuryuu. "I won't tell you what he said, but it was sumo related from the mental aspect," he hinted.. Akinomaki 40,666 Posted February 12 Asanoyama restarted keiko bouts on the 8th, on the 11th he trained with makushita and Asakoryu, but it feels odd with the knee supporter. "The plan is to enter at the Haru basho, but the shisho had said it will take about 8 months. It will be in consultation with the shisho. At this age, I have to be careful." During rehab he trained the uninjured right half of the body, but "the muscles are not back and I have to get left and right somehow even. I'm impatient, but I want to do it steadily without hurry." o
Akinomaki 40,666 Posted March 1 Asanoyama today had his 31st birthday and did 31 ichi-oshi one-push butsukari-geiko moves. He wants to be at the basho - and be sekitori till 40. Kintamayama 45,345 Posted March 2 Asanoyama has lodged a formal complaint to the authorities regarding the two birthdays on the calendar of a forum. "The fact that he doesn't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and it has caused a lot of bother to me and people at the club, to which I apologize.." he said, as his lawyer handed me a summons.
Naganoyama 5,942 Posted March 3 Of course he's upset. If he's got two birthdays, he's going to age at twice the rate. It's not as if he's going to get twice the number of presents. 1

Kintamayama 45,345 Posted March 6 Asanoyama trained at home today against Makushita 1 Ishizaki, new Makuuchi Asakouryuu’s brother and was 6-5. “I’m definitely in for Haru. I feel this is my last chance. Some days training goes well, other days it doesn’t.. I can only do my best..” he said. He was seen adjusting his bandage every now and then.
