Kintamayama 44,391 Posted August 5 (edited) Two weeks to go, very short window. Go!! It's a game called GTB. I promise you it will be almost as fun as watching show-jumping in the Olympics. This is a formal invitation to play the "Guess the Banzuke" game!! 25 years, 156 bashos. Please play. It's free this time.. Game rules: Guess the Banzuke. Simple. You get two points for a bulls-eye and one point for just getting the rank right. You get no points for waiting for it to happen. Tiebreakers - Most total guesses, then we check the banzuke backwards - getting the lower half right will be important. The most correct guesses in the last ten places will win the tiebreaker. If still tied, we go up a ranking at a time like a penalty shootout. If still tied, I suggest the player with the most patience. It's up to you to check if you are on the list of entries. It's going to be your fault if you don't notice that your entry went missing in the Internet void. No late entries will be expected or accepted. Those are the rules, and the rules will never be changed. Lately I have become grumpy and hungry. For rules, standings and revolving doors : http://www.dichne.com/Guess.htm For the nifty entry form, which will hopefully continue to do what it's intended to do : http://sumodb.sumoga...b/GTBEntry.aspx For Chiyotasuke's helper: https://chiyotasuke.github.io/gtbhelper/ For the "new" archives: http://sumodb.sumoga...gtbarchive.aspx See if you are on the entry list: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/gtb/GTBEntryList.aspx Deadline: Monday, August 19th, 2024 at 18:00 GMT ("Go, massive Terunofuji!!"!") - PLEASE NOTE-THIS IS ONE WEEK BEFORE THE OFFICIAL BANZUKE ANNOUNCEMENT!! Special thanks to showrunners Andoreasu, Wizard Doitsuyama for everything else, and go watch "Sanctuary" on Netflix.. Kachikoshi 21 Posted August 6 I’ve been playing GTB under the name “Midoriyama.” Is it possible to change it to Kachikoshi to match my forum name (+ my name in all other games)?
Wakawakawaka 139 Posted August 6 Just submit your entry with your usual e-mail, but type in the new shikona. That's what I did anyways.

Gurowake 3,927 Posted August 7 (edited) Too bad Hiradoumi didn't get an 11th win so we could have a good excuse to use the 3rd row of Sekiwake on the entry form. Be sure not to confuse Shimanoumi with Shonannoumi. The former had a KK again and thus will be on the list of eligible Maegashira. Shimazuumi also had a KK, but I think his name is different enough. And looking to the future, last time's jonokuchi winner was Shimizuumi. At this point a more educated forum member than me ought to chime in with "but the kanji are completely different". All the Shimanoumi in existence in the DB have had the Shima kanji from the city name, none with the island kanji. (One of them had the kanji "no" instead of katakana like the others, but all have had the sea kanji for "umi".) http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&shikona=shimanoumi&l=j

To expand on this: In the month of a basho and the month after it, there can be between 59 and 62 days. The difference in when the second Sunday falls in the following month compared to the previous month can be up to 6. However, the number of days between the start of two basho must be a multiple of 7. The smallest number you can get from starting from 59 to 62 and subtracting up to 6 is 53, and the next largest multiple of 7 is 56. This could happen any number of ways, but 56 is the smallest number of days between basho starts. Edited August 7 by Gurowake

Kotononami 86 Posted August 8 (edited) In these times when the number of entries has rarely been so high, it may be important to remember this part of the rules. Important - Only One (1) final entry per player and one entry per e-mail address!! Multiple entries, when verified, will disqualify all entries. The point is that the current sekitori is not the only one to have that exact "shima" in kanji, and if you ignore what version of the "no" particle they use, all 4 were exactly the same. If it was thought that the somewhat trite "Sea of Islands" was a reasonable shikona, someone might have used it by now; certainly there's no dearth of shikona using each element. So it's not a huge surprise that his kanji for "Shima" is different given that no one else has ever had what I'm going to describe as the "lame version" that you expected instead of "Shima-city Sea" that they've all been. Umi means sea, but it is very commonly added to the end of shikona that begin with a placename or personal name, probably as a euphonic additive. It usually does not carry along its intrinsic meaning.
