I am in favor to try this system at least for next basho and see how it goes. I believe it will add another layer of tactics without making the game more complicated. I would just have left the bonus points as they are and add the three points for a clean sweep. And I still think that clean sweeps involving wins by fusen should not be entitled to this extra bonus. Out of curiosity I just calculated last basho's results with this bonus points (keeping the 3 "normal" bonus points). The rankings would have remained the same. With the system proposed by Sakura there would have been few changes in the rankings (Tsunamiko + 2 ranks, Athenayama -2 ranks), but the winner would still have been Gernobono. Players were not aware though of that new rule then, so it is difficult to compare. Let's try it for one basho and see how it goes? Sumo Spiffy 550 Posted July 27, 2024 @Sakura I don't have any issue with the change; if you think success is leaning too far towards bonuses, then reducing the win bonus makes sense. But what's the goal with the sweep bonus? If it's just supposed to be a nice little "yay" for someone who nails a day, then three points seems fine. If you want people to really think about going for sweeps (which may be more likely with lower-scoring picks) versus targeting big numbers, I'm not sure three points is enough. It's very hard to sweep—there were only three this whole basho, two of which came on day one—and most days have some potentially high-scoring matches, so it's hard to see making picks based on an attempt to get a sweep (which would be different picks otherwise) working out well. If you want people to really think about going for sweeps (and, again, you may not, and that's OK), IMO, they need to at least score enough to act as a potential catch-up mechanic for players who are a little behind later in the basho. I realize you probably want to avoid having the standings defined by who got sweeps, but I think, say, six points rather than three could act as an incentive for some people in some cases to reconsider the picks they might automatically make under the current rule set. Alternately—and this one is very blatantly a catch-up mechanic—the sweep bonus could equal the day of the basho. Players would be incentivized to shift their thinking as the basho goes on. This is 100% my board game experience coming out, since a major aspect of those games is creating mechanics that keep players engaged late in the game even if they're behind, and it only makes sense if you want to change the fact that if someone gets a decent lead here, the last 3-5 days (maybe more) are often mostly a coronation than a competition. But if you did want that, this would be a way to give more people a chance to win later in the basho. 3 hours ago, Athenayama said: And I still think that clean sweeps involving wins by fusen should not be entitled to this extra bonus. Understandable, but sometimes people make picks and don't have a chance to change to account for fusens (if they would even want to). So, I'd suggest the bonus for a sweep be equal to non-fusen wins. That is, if someone gets all three right but one is a fusen, they get two extra points for nailing the other two picks. It's a very minor difference and would rarely come into play, but those are situations where we can lean towards player happiness, and I think it's better to still give someone a bonus for having the best possible outcome. (If the sweep bonus is changed, then adjust this idea accordingly.)

Sakura 1,484 Posted July 27, 2024 I think I'll have to choose a few basho, and calculate the points with different systems and work out what looks good. Of course, as @Athenayama says, people play with the rule set in hand, so we can't make direct comparisons.

Sakura 1,484 Posted July 30, 2024 Many thanks to @Athenayama for doing the scoring, as always. Congratulations to @Jakusotsu for winning. No further comments for now, as I am running a large conference. It's day 3, and I'm working 15+ hours per day. (Sleep required)
