Game 21 Nagoya Basho 2024

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Game 21 for the Natsu 2023 Basho. Please join us for some bout prediction fun!

I am launching the game again today, while Profomisakari will be back for the day to day comments.

HOW TO PLAY GAME 21

Shortly after the Banzuke is published, 21 potential bouts are selected by the admins. You just have to decide which bouts will or will not take place and, if they will, who you think will be the winners. The deadline to play is always the Friday before the basho starts. Usually at 11 AM (JST) / 2 AM (UTC), but may be hours earlier if I discover the torikumi has already been revealed.

Each correct pick will earn you one point. If a Rikishi is listed in one of the potential bouts but never has a match scheduled in the Basho, the bout will not count for the allocation of points. If two or more entrants end up with the same number of correct picks, the two following tiebreaker rules will apply:

  • TB1: entrants will earn TB points for their ability to spot winning outsiders (i.e. the fewer players to correctly pick a winner, the more TB points you score) and the entrant with most TB points will win the tiebreaker.

  • TB2: if the first tiebreaker does not break the tie, the entrant with the earliest submission time will be declared the winner. Your submission time updates if you edit.

If you want to play, simply click the link below. it will take you to a multiple-choice form that will offer you three choices for each bout:

  • A if you think the first Rikishi will win

  • B if you think the second Rikishi will win

  • X if you think the bout will not take place

In addition to your picks and your shikona, the form will ask for a valid email address. The reason for this request is (a) to allow the system to send you a copy of your picks and (b) to allow you to update your choices until the deadline by clicking the “Edit Response'' button that is in the email.

If you want to play for the upcoming Basho, HERE IS THE LINK.

The deadline to play is Friday 12th of July at 11 AM (JST), 2 AM (UTC)

To help you prepare your picks, here are the bouts for the upcoming Basho:

Nr A History B
1 Terunofuji 1-0 Hiradoumi
2 Hoshoryu 2-2 Atamifuji
3 Shonannoumi 2-5 Kinbozan

18 Ichiyamamoto - Wakatakakage
19 Nishikifuji 4-5 Nishikigi

Hi @Yarimotsu,

Unfortunately I didn't select "email me my selections" and so can't edit my choices. Are you able to switch me to choice "A" for match 1? If not, no worries

Thank you!

No worries, I have updated your guess. In principle the game still accepts manual entries like it did before the google forms were introduced to significantly reduce the work on the backend, and so long as they are posted before I deem the game closed for entries I will include them on the entry sheet.

18 Ichiyamamoto - Wakatakakage 3 26 0   .
19 Nishikifuji 4-5 Nishikigi 8 16 5   .
20 Kotoshoho 5-6 Sadanoumi 15 14 0   .
21 Takanosho 8-8 Shodai 16 10 3   .

With Chiyoshoma absent, bout 15 is in danger of not being counted. Should he turn up too late to face Endo there are zero X picks here, so that wouldn't impact our game either.

Interestingly enough bout 20 is considered a coinflip along with bouts 17, 3, and 13, and opinions are also split about Kotozakura-Onosato in slot 8.

Wins for Atamifuji, Tobizaru or Ichiyamamoto will benefit a very select few.

I now hand over to @Profomisakari for the day-to-day action. Good luck everyone! And welcome to our new players!

Two game 21 bouts were on day 1.
As expected, the
Yokozuna beat the new Sanyaku Hiradoumi.
But surprisingly, Atamifuji beat the favorite Hoshoryu.
The newcomer Jimmizakura was the only one who had predicted this.
He now leads the table with 2 points and an outstanding tiebreaker value.
By the way, I suspect that
Jimmi is a dear old acquaintance who is just competing under a new name.
But I don't know for sure.

Perhaps Yarimotsu can confirm it for us.

Day 3 brought us only one game 21 bout.
Kotoshoho won it.
15 of the 29 players had him.
The leader
Jimmizakura had him not,
but his grandous Pick to bout 1 brought him enough TB1 value to hold his lead.

Five players are until today without one point.
This is the current ranking.
It will stay one day longer,
because tomorrow is again no bout for our game.
But on da 5 come again two game 21 bouts.

Players ranking after day 5
Today we had two game 21 bouts
One bout won Midorifuji per fusen Sho
against the favorite Asanoyama

This had only 5 players.
For the other winner Roga over the senior Takarafuji

Jimitakura had both winners not,

the lead of the following group of 16 players.

Now, however, he should start collecting points again.

Players ranking after day 9
Today on day 9 I long time thought we had no game 21 bout.
But then I noticed that I hadn't entered the Ryuden vs. Tamawashi fight
in my results matrix.
About the same number of players had bet on the two Rikishi.

Tamawashi won, but the two leaders didn't.
So we have now a leaders group of group of 6 players with eacbh 6 points
and
Hakuhonofan is with the best TB value back on the top.
Here is the new ranking table:

Rk Player Pts TB
1 Hakuhonofan 6 87
2 ChickyStarr 6 68
3 Susanoo 6 67
4 fujisan 6 57
5 Bunbukuchagama 6 44

Players ranking before Senshuraku
In the past we had often on day 14 the situation,
that the Semshuraku torikumi include no game 21 bout.
Then we could count and add the X votes and we had the Winner.

This time we have this not.
This time we have on Day 15 two bouts and must wait.
And we have 4 X bouts and a new ranking.
And now we have again a new leader pair.
Look at this ranking!

Rk Player Pts TB
1 Susanoo 10 147
2 Asapedroryu 10 145
3 Karasukurai 9 136
4 Bunbukuchagama 9 131
5 WAKATAKE 9 129
6 Rokudenashi 9 128
7 Yarimotsu 8 143
8 Hakuhonofan 8 140
9 Andreas21 8 103
10 fujisan 8 100
11 Jimizakura 7 111
12 Fashiriteta 7 103
13 Mizuma 7 101
14 Hisui 7 98
15 ChickyStarr 7 96
16 Gusoyama 7 88
17 Shatsume 6 87
18 shimodahito 6 84
19 Tochinofuji 6 79
20 Eatplaylovesumo 6 72

The Basho is over - and the game is over!

5 Susanoo 10 147
6 Bunbukuchagama 10 144
7 Yarimotsu 9 156
8 Karasukurai 9 136
9 Andreas21 9 116
10 fujisan 9 113
11 Mizuma 8 124
12 ChickyStarr 8 109
13 Gusoyama 8 101
14 Jimizakura 7 111
15 Fashiriteta 7 103

28 Papayasu 5 56
29 Athenayama 3 31

And we have two other winners as before Senshuraku-
Two players have now 11 daily bout wins:

Wakatake (Yushowinner...) is the Winner of the game
with the better tiebreaker value
before
Asapedroryu (Secondprize...).

To those both players our
great Congratulation!
(Applauding...)      (Clappingwildly...)          (Neener,neener...)           (Neener,neener...)         (Clappingwildly...)        (Applauding...)

Thanks to all players for participation.
A special thank to
Yarimotsu
for the as ever interesting bout selection.

In September to Aki Basho we'll start´a new game 22
and

Thanks for Profo for handling the day-to-day work. I hope our players had fun following along - I know I got excited when I saw which X predictions would come true.

Congratulations to @WAKATAKE whose second victory in this game follows just over 6 years after the first!

For Asapedroryu it's a second runner-up performance on tiebreaker and surely a yusho will follow soon.

Please join us again next time, where I will endeavour to provide us with interesting matchups to consider.
