It seems like they've accepted that not all intra-sanyaku matches are going to make sense when we're into the last 4-5 days, so they're giving themselves flexibility and being fine with sanyaku getting an extra maegashira match. If they're doing well, they can test contenders; if they're not, then it doesn't look like they're giving sanyaku performing well a walkover. There's always a reasonable sanyaku-maegashira matchup to be made somewhere in there.

There's plenty of options; the only issue is that they can't still do the top 4 round robin over the last 3 days, which is strange given that there are currently 4 upper sanyaku, making it an obvious way to go in general. It means that, should all the Ozeki compete to the end, one of their matches among themselves will be sooner than at least one of their matches against someone lower-ranked. Perhaps they are simply predicting that Takakeisho isn't going to make it, or at least isn't going to be a useful opponent when it gets that late in the tournament. Perhaps it's just a relic of the times when there were less than 4 upper sanyaku competing and they didn't have as good of a reason to force the top 4 round robin as they do this tournament. Regardless, I don't know why they wouldn't have left Abi vs. Daieisho or Kirishima vs. Hiradoumi available to leave themselves that option. It's rather strange. 7. I know there are options, I came up with three this morning before going to work. I'm just not in favour of skipping the final four. But perhaps that gives them more flexibility when it comes to underperforming Ozeki.

I know that cuts against the way they schedule, but I think they're either expecting to have better matchups available for the Y/O (lower sanyaku or maegashira) or they'll do the round-robin and that's it.
