Now my flabber is gasted - why does the M2 bout happen before the M4 bout? Mitakeumi would have been my choice for Takakeisho.

Mitakeumi was always going to Koto. If they shuffled things to keep Takakeisho in against the higher maegashira for now (which was the thing I struggled with—would they maintain the order or mix it up because of Takayasu's absence?), it would have been against Waka.

I don't quite follow. WMH was always going to Hoshoryu as the last Ozeki on the Torikumi.

Sure, as long as they followed the normal order. But if they were going to mix it up, they'd switch Hoshoryu's opponent before they switched Koto's, right?

6. Hoshoryu

I gave Yuria the options and let her choose for me.

I don't know who Yuria is, but you should listen to her more often.

Basically Ura was the first available maegashira opponent that Takakeisho hadn't faced. When I say available, I mean that some maegashira like Mkitakeumi had already been assigned to other rikishi.

I'm trying not to regret not playing as I would be 5-0 at the moment.

And that's exactly what I don't get, but that's just me, of course...

Partner/channel artist. She's not heavy into sumo but enjoys the dramatic moments. (And drawing kittens.)

Train's running, so this seems like a safe day to show how I lay things out (everyone's probably got a bit of a different style, of course):

Going into the day 5 schedule, there were three maegashira higher ranked than Ura that Takakeisho hadn't fought: Gonoyama, Mitakeumi, and Wakamotoharu. The only way Takakeisho would get Ura is if the three higher-ranked sanyaku took exactly those three opponents. But that's what happened. Gonoyama was next for Teru, Mitakeumi was next for Koto, and Waka was next for Nephew. The fact Keisho still had all those maegashira holes in his schedule above Ura no longer mattered.

The alternative I had considered was this:

In this version, in order to keep Takakeisho facing higher-ranked maegashira, the committee puts their thumb on the scale and drops Hoshoryu down to face Tobi so Keisho can fight Waka. I was genuinely torn because, if ever there was a time for them to mess with the setup, this might be it. But they didn't.

Edit: Well, both of them are on the same page. Easier to compare, I suppose.

My line of thought:
last Ozeki of the day (Hoshoryu) gets the highest ranked Maegashira available --> Wakamotoharu (exactly what happened)
middle Ozeki of the day (Takakeisho) gets the next highest ranked Maegashira available -->  Mitakeumi (didn't happen)
first Ozeki of the day (Kotozakura) gets the next highest ranked Maegashira available -->  Tobizaru (since Gonoyama was for the Yokozuna)

Obviously that's not how it works, but I still don't see why.

It sometimes works like that, but not most of the time.  I'm not divulging any more information though about when to use that method.

Yeah, when it's torikumi order vs banzuke order is a key nuance of the game.

Now that I'm retired, I want to tell people what the solution is, but I think some players wouldn't want that.

Anyway

  1. Get the intra-sanyaku bouts right
  2. Paying attention to the day, work out what method of assigning maegashira rikishi to be aites for the sanyaku you need to use
  3. Paying attention to the day, assign all remaining Makuuchi bouts.
