Yubinhaad 11,573 Posted May 30 Effective as of June 1st, says the oshirase. The tokoyama is Tokokasumi who had just joined in April. So of the rikishi who moved from Oguruma-beya, Kirinryu alone has decided to stay with Nishonoseki.

So of the rikishi who moved from Oguruma-beya, Kirinryu alone has decided to stay with Nishonoseki. That's earlier than rumoured, but Shirokuma apparently stays, like I had assumed in the beginning - tabloid talk focussed on Onosato losing him as training partner. We'll see if the location will be what had been reported - now it's said, it will be announced as soon at it has been officially decided. https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/articles/-/304206 On 09/05/2024 at 21:30, Akinomaki said: The former shisho leaves the NSK and ex-Yoshikaze after the Aki basho the scandalous Nishonoseki-beya to become independent, according to the latest rumours on YT, which stem from a Weekly Post article 3 days ago https://www.news-postseven.com/archives/20240507_1961510.html They'll use the just closed Michinoku-beya, he takes his Nittaidai guys with him, except Onosato. But now they are moving from the most distant to the heya closest to the kokugikan (the location is not finally confirmed though) On 28/05/2024 at 13:32, Akinomaki said: Which heya is closest to the kokugikan? It used to be Michinoku, but it's closed down - the new Nakamura-beya is said to use the premises when it's created - 150m, a 3 minutes walk away from the kokugikan. Now the closest is Kasugano - 8 minutes to walk, then Tokitsukaze with 9 minutes, both are 550m away using Google Map. Next group with 10 minutes and 700 meters away are Hakkaku and Dewanoumi. Kirishima from closest is now at the 2600m and 36minutes to walk Otowayama-beya. The heya with the greatest distance is Nishonoseki-beya: by the fastest route 53 km, that map tells it's 12h16m to walk. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/column/sumo/news/202405260000159.html
Kaninoyama 1,696 Posted May 30 Just wondering how Nishonoseki & Nakamura agree to divvy up the rikishi in situations like this. Is it contentious? Are the ones going with Nakamura ones he specifically recruited? Or did the rikishi themselves express preference to join him rather than stay? Inquiring minds want to know.... This is not a forced move like with Miyagino, the rikishi can chose if they want to go or stay. Not even all of those he recruited or brought to the heya go with Nakamura 20 hours ago, Yubinhaad said: of the rikishi who moved from Oguruma-beya, Kirinryu alone has decided to stay with Nishonoseki. He came with 8 and goes with 8, 2 of them new, Kato and Kayo - 1 stays, Fujikawa has retired by now. Of cause all those still named -kaze go with Yoshikaze, but only 3 of the 5 from Nittaidai - all recruited by his connection there and all but Onosato scouted by him personally - Shirokuma and Kayo joined together. o 8 hours ago, incognito said: Do we know the juniors involved in the drinking scandal? Not much about the heya that started today - only Nishonoseki-beya has reduced the members listed for the heya https://nishonosekibeya.com/introduction/#wrestler The NSK still lists them at the old heya https://www.sumo.or.jp/ResultRikishiDataSumoBeya/detail/32/ and has no Nakamura-beya yet, the 44th heya now. The recent Naozotore sumo special mentioned that each heya has to have a tokoyama, which would limit the number of heya to 50 - the upper limit for tokoyama, gyoji and yobidashi have 45 - apparently they weren't exact in the wording. - Edit: wikipedia says tokoyama numbers may be increased above 50 if a heya has none and there are 12 rikishi or more The heya homepage nakamurabeya.jp is still in preparation https://nakamurabeya.jp/introduction, but the location 150m away from the kokugikan is confirmed https://nakamurabeya.jp/access/ Edited June 1 by Akinomaki
Asashosakari 18,868 Posted June 1 (edited) It definitely wasn't the case that every heya had a tokoyama back when when there were as many as 55 of them two decades ago. Even now there are seven that don't have one, and while those are mostly* stables that are relatively new (Ajigawa, Takekuma) or stables that lost one to retirement within the last few years (Futagoyama, Nishiiwa, Onoe, Takasago), it certainly appears to be more of a "should" regulation than "must". * The only exception appears to be Asahiyama, going by Naganoyama's heya member listings history for the eight years of its existence. Has it had any that lasted for less than a year? The Kyokai website will presumably be updated on Monday. Edited June 1 by Asashosakari

On their old blog-style website, Takasago-beya had a notice at the top for years asking for tokoyama applicants, without success. I don't know who will help out there after Tokoyumi's early retirement; maybe Tokonaka who is surely not overworked at Nishikido-beya.
