Chiyoshoma has acquired the Japanese nationality, published today in the official daily gazette https://kanpou.npb.go.jp/20240522/20240522h01226/20240522h012260001f.html

- 2nd on the list today, with the katakana version of his real name as Japanese name, ガンバータル・ムンクサイハン

- ready to become oyakata

- only he, not his wife

He'll take on the name of a supporter, Ishibashi, and be Shoma Ishibashi 石橋翔馬. About a kabu: "Absolutely nothing yet". He had applied for citizenship about 2 years ago, but had planned it long ago. His wife will stay Mongolian, both had obtained a permanent resident permit at the same time. o

Is there any reason to acquire Japanese citizenship (afaik giving up your previous citizenship in the process) if you're already a permanent resident?

Also lmao at someone effectively paying enough to get the 'name a rikishi' stretch goal

You must be a citizen to become oyakata.

edit: also the requirement to give up other citizenship has ways around that

If you're married and have dealings often in two countries, then it often works to have one partner have a citizenship from each country. You might need to do a bit of structuring but each partner can use their citizenship to sort out affairs in their chosen state.
