Matsuda 満津田 - only the same reading as his real name 松田, but it's from the name of the restaurant of the parents matsudashokudou.com - in 5th generation, he'll likely be the 6th generation owner

The time has come. Matsuda will retire after the basho and become successor to the well established restaurant Matsuda of his parents in his hometown Iida (since Meiji 20)

today a win:

Sd50w Matsuda (1-1) uwatenage Sd49w Tsugaruumi (0-2)

Matsuda:

Honestly, after 11 years at sub-Sekitori level he looks great!  Apparently he never got above 120 kg, which helps (though maybe at the expense of his Sumo rank).

(Ex-)rikishi, tall, handsome, successor to a successful family business. He should be fairly popular with the ladies!

He started out very well for a short, light rikishi: 30-12 out of the gate and 9/10 KK to reach Ms39.  He's been up-and-down since then, but two 2-5 basho in a row from the bottom of Makushita have put him in a hole.  But he's still young (25).  Wish him only the best!

Always stood out to me because the commentators usually made an effort to pronounce his shikona as close to an English "Michael" as possible, instead of a standard "Maikeru". I imagine that's exceedingly rare in the ozumo world.

Also - he was a bit of a yorikiri machine in his early days surging through the ranks, before becoming more well-rounded in winning techniques when he established himself as a makushita-sandanme yoyo. His yorikiri percentage is still >50%, though!

Baraki (Shikihide)

Like Maikeru, half-Filipino; also hero of the famous Stretch to Minimum Height photo at his initial weigh-in (the db suggests he shrank from 167 cm to 164 cm to 163 cm over his career).

Hokaho was probably due, good riddance to Otani; I didn't see too much of Senho so can't comment to his potential. Not massive losses though, it seems.

They all pulled a James Bond -- it should have been clear they were leaving.

Sad news about Mogamizakura. He caught my attention when starting 5-0 in July 21, He was big, strong and very young and I remember hoping that Shikihide had found a good one at last. He did get stuck in upper jonidan/ lower sandanme but he was still only 18 and could gone further.

SumoDB is down for me, so I can't confirm the exact timeline;

But he fluked a sandanme yusho very early in his career, got absolutely battered in makushita two months later, and sadly never looked like he was even close to getting another chance in more than 10 years. Hope his post-ozumo life goes well.

I think he was only in the playoffs.  Hōchiyama won that Sandanme yūshō and promptly retired afterwards.

Yeah, now that SumoDB worked for me, I saw that. That's correct. That's actually how I'd learnt that it was the 7 wins and not the yusho that mattered when it came to the guaranteed divisional promotions.

I was also wrong in that he actually had another basho in makushita four years later, but went down immediately afterwards - posting a more respectable 3 wins, though.

Are these the "loyalists" that a certain sumo channel mentions? I at first thought known oyakata supporters of Miyagino had retired.

What will Enho do next basho? Kyujo and just show up at day 13-15 or just let him fall to banzuke-gai?

He will gambarize - interviewed yesterday at his local paper's offices: "Now I'm health itself. I want to show myself healthy on the dohyo soon." The injured neck is okay, he still wants to fight Onosato, as the top one now to give vigour and spirit to his local fans from the dohyo.

Not retiring is Myogiryu (or, at least, not retiring before the banzuke is made), so Kiryuko is out of luck, it seems.

The kabu musical chairs seem to be rather close to completion, but unfortunately they weren't quick enough for poor Kiryuko.

He's had some history at making it to the promotion area but failing to get the nod, despite good showings whenever he's called for juryo bouts, so I REALLY hope he nails four wins in two months.

I love the guy but he's been sounding completely delusional.
