Katooshu 3,138 Posted July 28 Aonishiki is going to surpass Shishi next year, so many moves. Gets his 6th win with something like a double leg takedown.

mt fuji 976 Posted July 28 just wanna say it's really nice to hear Murray on the last day's NHK commentary for the full broadcast :)
Benihana 1,901 Posted July 28 ok, things getting exceedingly interesting now.
Benihana 1,901 Posted July 28 And we got a play-off! Oh what a beautiful day.
Akinomaki 39,908 Posted July 28 That's why I hoped for a pairing of Terunofuji-Hoshoryu - in the fight against Takakeisho on his last leg, Terunofuji used up all his top strength - and now my prediction can still be going down the drain
Akinomaki 39,908 Posted July 28 The worst thing about a yokozuna play-off is that we have to listen to Jiro for another bout
Calamityama 24 Posted July 28 Terunofuji YUsho !!!!
Benihana 1,901 Posted July 28 Kudos to Takanosho, he made Terunofuji fight for that title, but in the end experience won. That attempted grip change was no good idea. But 3rd jun-yusho and 3rd kinboshi doesn't look bad on his resumee. If he stays healthy, we have another contender for top ranks.
Yarimotsu 535 Posted July 28 Amazingly, I have predicted this outcome in the Norizo cup. Was a great time watching the bouts today with my brother, who is a Terunofuji fan.
Adz_517 21 Posted July 28 Congratulations Teru, just when everyone thinks he’s finished for good he comes back to prove despite everything, he’s still the best in the business. On a sad note, I’ve got a feeling his intai will be announced in the next few days. He’s just got nothing else to prove and will choose to go out on a high note. Akinomaki 39,908 Posted July 28 The first yusho in Nagoya for the yokozuna, at the last Nagoya basho in the old arena. Terunofuji thinks he found some new way to fight in Nagoya and wants to build on this from now on. No hint of intai in his interview. 1
MrGrumpyGills 119 Posted July 28 I've been following sumo for a bit over 11 years (which I realize isn't a long time compared to many others) but this was the most disappointing basho for me. Takakeishō losing his rank most likely permanently (I just don't see him getting 10 wins next time due to his injuries; yes, I'm a fan of his), Kirishima not regaining ozeki, Asanoyama's bad injury, plus overall pretty meh sumo... I'm happy for Hiradoumi, Rōga and Takanoshō, but that's about it. Oh yeah, right, congratz to Terunofuji.
Benihana 1,901 Posted July 28 (edited) MidnightSumo showing the parade right now. Very cool to see this live. Edit: Atamifuji was the flag-bearer. If he one day ends his sumo career without kabu, he'll have a great career as entertainer Edited July 28 by Benihana
RabidJohn 1,668 Posted July 28 Congratulations to Terunofuji on no. 10. Good to see him achieve his stated goal, and Takanosho made him work for it. I did not see that coming even 3 days ago. I'm pleased for Hiradoumi. Great showing as a shin-komusubi and a well-deserved gino-sho. A bit unlucky that the sekiwake slots are currently so congested, but them's the breaks. Kotozakura may well have hit a turning point with his maiden win over the yokozuna. A great way to end a solid basho. Sad to see Takakeisho's final ozeki bout turn out that way. Not a fitting end to a great term as ozeki.
Octofuji 332 Posted July 28 (edited) Stunning utchari from Hakuoho v Shishi. If you watch his foot on the tawara it remains utterly motionless until the last moment when he launches himself into the air. Beautiful to watch! With the YDC probably placated for the time being, he can take two basho off, come back to restore order, and wait until a successor emerges... Leoben 121 Posted July 28 (edited) Congrats to Terunofuji. Can he make it 11? 12? In the last 2 years, he has a 100% win rate in tournaments he finishes so he still has something left in the tank. I don't think he should be under pressure to retire yet. The other interesting story for me has been Hakuoho, who finally looks like he has regained some of his pre-injury form. His utchari today was one of the moves of the tournament, just beautiful. Edited July 28 by Leoben
Seregost 130 Posted July 28 Well, congrats to Terunofuji, he's the best wrestler nowadays, at least when his injuries let him compete. Takanosho did a great job, yesterday with that brutal nodowa and today demolishing Onosato, whose ozeki run has taken maybe a fatal wound. But Terunofuji answered well in the play off, waiting for the right moment and displaying all his experience in the bout. Not sure if it's the first kettei sen I see him winning, just remember when he lost against Hakuho and Takakeisho (Nagoya and Kyushu ).
I am the Yokozuna 188 Posted July 28 Who was the guy in white shirt who congratulated Terunofuji when he entered the hanamichi? Miyagino?

just_some_guy 259 Posted July 28 2 hours ago, Seregost said: and today demolishing Onosato, whose ozeki run has taken maybe a fatal wound. By the numbers he "only" needs 12 wins next basho so perhaps it's less a fatal wound and more a non-fatal delay. Regardless, barring a major injury I'll be shocked if Onosato doesn't reach Ozeki at some point.
