It looks like they go airborne exactly at the same time. Onosato touches first but both are well outside at that point. Should have been a redo IMHO.

We need a new kimarite: Shonannoumi kicking out Nishikifuji's foot.

Ura looking confident in every bout, Mitakeumi taking everyone’s best charge and moves like it’s keiko then just overwhelming them, Ozeki underwhelming again, Teru just should never have even set foot on the dohyo and whether he gets another yusho or not, retirement would have been more of a benefit to him a long time ago; god knows how many years he’s shaved off his life continuing in the shape he’s in. Certainly his quality of life will be impacted greatly by his decision to stay and fight on. It’s genuinely sad at this point. But all in all, an interesting basho so far.

I love Ura and always want Tamawashi to do well as I like the old man of the bunch getting his kk over the young ‘uns, and have started to appreciate Sadanoumi’s kind of part time role as destroyer of win streaks at times, so want him to do well, too. There really is something for everyone in the top two divisions at the moment, with Onosato’s rapid rise and hopefully Takerufuji back as good as before soon.

I can only guess the pressure to gain the rank of Yokozuna is behind the stuttering of the Ozeki. Pressure can suck when literally the entire sport is waiting on you to perform well enough to get it done, and gaining Yokozuna is obviously one of the hardest things to do in any sport, period. That can’t help.

He was secretly replaced by his twin who is not that good at sumo.

Depends on what "after day 6" refers to. B-)

After day 6 and before day 7, obviously. :-P

Kirishima currently looks like one of my sad mates doing beach sumo after nine beers. Almost as good.

Kirishima obviously cannot stand the pressure. After having won the yusho everybody expected the tsuna and that probably made him thinking, which may have been poison to his mind and affected his sumo. He seems not to be (yet) stable enough to continuously being an Ozeki and IMHO he deserves to be being demoted.

While it's sad that he'd be demoted I really hope he doesn't become a mongolian Shodai.

I want to say that Tsurugishou should go kyujo and take care of his health, but his knee seemingly hasn't been getting better for a while. Still, it hurts to see him on the dohyo and he's in no shape to fight at the moment.

Two good bouts in a row for Hokutofuji. I'm happy to see he's on the rise and still in a position for kachikoshi.

Shodai did not wake up properly this morning. I simply can't find any other way to explain his total passiveness. Maybe he'll manage to grab a cup of coffee before stepping on the dohyo tomorrow.

Smart, well planned sumo by Ura! Shouldn't expect less from him in any case. You could see it all forming in his head, from the push to the perfectly timed arm grab to the mawashi grip until the pushout. I have rarely seen a better planned and executed bout.

Daieisho went for a full obliteration against Wakamotoharu. When he gets his tachiai right, there's not much to do.

Kotozakura simply got outmuscled today. Onosato managed to exert his power much better while maintaining a strong grip and once Kotozakura was on the back foot he'd already lost.

Oho will be pretty happy about his payday. Well deserved too, he fought Kirishima evenly. Kirishima on the other hand unfortunately can't stop falling apart.

Think Onosato is hurt or just trying something new? His style seems different than it has been the past 2 tournaments.

To me it seems today's bout wasn't anything new. I've seen him use the sideways pushout before. And I don't think he could've won against Kotozakura if he was injured.

I'm gutted at Kirishima's catastrophic loss of performance, just as I was with Mitakeumi's before him. Sumo is brutally cruel to expectations.

That said, I believe it's self-inflicted on Kirishima's part. Look back at Akinomaki's training reports from before the last basho - the number of keiko bouts he did. The silly bugger went beyond even Takayasu levels of peaking way too soon, hurt himself in the process and hasn't been able to recover. I've no doubt pressure to go for the rope was the motivating factor, but I half-expected this outcome.

IMHO, he should go kyujo immediately, rest up and try to recover for his 10-win sekiwake dog's chance.

On the bright side, I was impressed with Oshoma's win against back-in-form Takarafuji, Ura's win against Mitakeumi to take the sole lead, and the unambiguous ozeki scalp for Onosato.

Oh, and Kinbozan out-Tamawashi-ing Tamawashi (again?) was superb.

All these negative comments about Kirishima, you all do realize that this Kirishima is injured, right? Or do I live on another planet?
This is not Kirishima and this has nothing to do with his rank and/or any pressure.. I just hope he heals as soon a possible.

Be honest. :-D

I always do, but it’s more of an intense desire than a prediction lol. I know no one will believe me but I sort of predicted his izori on senshuraku a couple of basho ago. I mean, i ‘predicted’ it as the bout started though, as I thought he’d be worried his fans would be disappointed with his score on san’yaku debut and would want to leave them with something to cheer them up, and thought it’d probably be a backwards body drop. And then he did it lol.

I don’t blame anyone who thinks I’m full of poo; I’d think the same if I heard anyone else say the same thing.

Back to the subject, though, I have a follow on question: who believes he can keep it going and get his first cup? He’s been known to take confidence and then fight better from beating someone ranked higher than him, and confidence seems to be his primary motivational inspiration which reeling off a whole bunch of wins has got to I still in him. Mitakeumi was looking imperious prior to today, just outclassing everyone he’s faced. Surely that win in particular will give him some cause to be confident, even though he’s not ranked as high as Ura these days.

I mean, I want him to win so friggin much and I’m kind of just trying to convince myself here. Anyone else convinced by my dodgy logic?

I thought so too in the run up to the basho, but then I read all the reports of his pre-basho keiko with scores like 16-1 and figured he'd gotten better. I really can't figure out why he'd do so much keiko if he's injured, and how he'd manage to do it so well. Unless he reinjured himself at the start of the basho. That would explain the disparity between keiko and basho results.

Maybe. All I know is that he can't have become so bad so suddenly, there has to be some good explanation. And in my humble opinion it can only be a health issue. Maybe we'll never know officialy, at least in the near future, the real reason. I'm sure there is one though.

It's certain he is injured. There is no other explanation.
