He had time to do almost a half circle around the dohyo to move to a better attacking position while Meisei was trying to turn around. Well deserved second win. Takayasu proved too strong for Onosato. Onosato is not yet top level in skill and if he can't overpower his opponent with raw power, he's often left vulnerable to rikishi with better technique than him. What a monstrous tachiai by Abi! Hoshoryuu basically couldn't do anything before he was out of the dohyo. Hoshoryuu wasn't doing his wry smile anymore after this loss. Hiradoumi's belly seems to be even more magnificently round. He almost got Kirishima too, but the ozeki's ability to resist won out. Today, Kotozakura didn't come in the dohyo to play. All business from the ozeki, focused on getting the win by any means. I don't mean that in a bad way either, it took considerable timing and speed to pull off the hikiotoshi against Atamifuji. RabidJohn 1,663 Posted May 13 (edited) Big improvement on yesterday in that only Hoshoryu had me swearing at my monitor... Hiradoumi brought the Mongolian brawler out in Kirishima today. Not pretty, but at least his fighting spirit is still evident. I also noticed Shonosuke's easiest day ever: mount the dohyo, wait for Daieisho, announce his fusensho, then get off the dohyo to watch the musubi-no-ichiban and yumitori-shiki. Nice! Akinomaki 39,763 Posted May 13 Atamifuiji had no chance - the shisho was watching him on Abema, a debut there for Isegahama. Quite weird, with ex-NHK Fujii asking him about the Miyagino-merged heya situation - presenting Miyagino-acquired Kusano as a new hope for Isegahama. Kusano talked with Miyagino at the end of the hana-michi after his debut win. Fujii showed Isegahama yesterday's Atamifuiji yusho prediction by Waka, who wanted Isegahama to comment on that the next day, since he was scheduled as guest commentator. If I'm not mistaken, Ura won the grip strength contest conducted by AbemaTV back in January. He's definitely got the strength to back up his amazing techniques! Amamaniac 2,078 Posted May 13 24 year-old Mongolian Onokatsu looks like he has potential. Debuting after only three tournaments in pro sumo, he has himself two straight wins thus far. Will he be the next wrestler to reach the Top Division before having enough hair to form a topknot? My only concern is seeing the tape on his wrists and feet. maorencze 144 Posted May 13 Lesson learned the hard way for Hiradoumi I guess - dont piss off a Mongolian Y/O by false-starting, almost never ends well. Hakuhou or the dai-guy before him would send him to 5th row with a GLARE. Kotozakura proved what I saw in 1st bout as well, all business and yesterday was just bad luck / bad break in a bout with well-prepared well-executing ex-titlist opponent. Terunofuji...why he entered? But oh well, he still hasnt given up on his 10th, chronic health issues notwithstanding. Lets see if he can muster up 15 healthy(ish) days to win one more then call it quits. Takakeisho is done and its a saaaad thing to see, but with his style and bodytype it was bound to happen earlier than later I'm afraid. Hoshoryu...I wonder how much does the knee hamper his lateral mobility? Atamifuji is no slouch, Abi is very fast and Daieisho is a cannonball when he times his tachiai right, gonna wait for Takayasu, Oonosato or Oho bout before making a completely subjective, inexperienced, uneducated and baseless opinion about Hoshoryu's mobility issues though. People (including his opponents) quite often forget just how much of a power beast Ura had to turn himself into with all that weight lifting to get back from his injuries. This is not the same wrestler that relied solely on his bag of tricks and skill to win (putting himself in danger way too often), this version is maybe a tiny bit slower and not as adventurous at times, but the power, the POWER! I wonder who's the favourite right now? Daieisho seems to have his tachiai game on point this basho which could take him far again, Ura is solid, lets see what Kotozakura and (not-yet-technically-matured) Oonosato have in them since this is going to be a 13-2 winning result (I purposedly have left out and will leave out of an mentions the one-whose-name-we-dont-speak-out-loud-to-prevent-any-jinxes) 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I've watched every Abi/Hoshoryu match, and this is the first time Abi was able to blow through him like that. But to be fair to Hoshoryu, I'd say it's also the first time Abi really tried to do it. Hoshoryu is able to consistently come forward and meet Abi's hands, which has to suck but it also blunts Abi's pushing force. This time Abi looked like he got shot out of a cannon, and Hoshoryu never got his weight forward. So, it's not really an issue of lateral mobility; Hoshoryu consistently meets Abi head-on and then uses whatever happens to sometimes set up lateral mobility later. He never got a chance to do that in this case. Now, a knee issue might lead to him being a little slow on the draw, which could certainly lead to yesterday's outcome. But I think he just got caught off-guard by the fact Abi—Abi!—somehow found a whole new level of aggression. So, as bad as it looked, that's more an upside for Abi than a downside for Hoshoryu. Daieisho has a similar style but doesn't pose the same physical questions. He's still good and could win, but I'm looking more for how Hoshoryu reacts to his attack, win or lose. dingo 1,159 Posted May 14 Nice strong 3-0 starts by several lower ranked makuuchi. Takarafuji, Oshoma, Kinbozan, etc looking quite good in the first three days. With the makuuchi top getting hollowed out, might there be any surprise yusho candidates here? In fact, the first 3-0 rikishi at the top is maegashira 4 Ura... Speaking of Ura, he fought well again today and got a confident win! Always enjoyable seeing him do well. Trying for a sanyaku return? Oho is not doing bad sumo as such, but is getting outplayed by smarter opponents. Here's hoping that he'll improve on his 0-3 record. Hiradoumi fought well but in the end Kotozakura is simply larger, heavier and stronger. Going head to head like Hiradoumi tried to, there's not much to do against that fact. Kirishima got first bulldozed and then flipped out of the dohyo. Not a good look for the kadoban ozeki.
