Kishinoyama 582 Posted May 12 Terunofuji losing is no surprise to me but what a disaster today at the top of the banzuke. The only good thing is the sanyaku will start winning.... when they start facing each other....

Yarimotsu 522 Posted May 12 Onosato seemed to think he was still in university after that victory, barely bothering to contain a celebration. Would be nice if he started acting like the ozeki / yokozuna he surely must be on course to become sooner rather than later.
Amamaniac 2,078 Posted May 12 (edited) So when was the last time the top seven (eight, if we include Asanoyama who is sitting out) wrestlers on the banzuke lost their Day 1 bouts? Dare I say, never? Those who know how to use the database are welcome to prove me wrong. Just to say, these are strange times in the history of oozumo! Sakura 1,472 Posted May 12 3 hours ago, Faustonowaka said: All but one sanyaku losing on the same day must be some kind of record As far I can tell, for Day 1 anyway. I haven't checked any other day. There have been more combined losses (8) on a few occasions, but the Sanyaku was larger so more got wins.
Akinomaki 39,776 Posted May 12 In the past Oguruma was regular, recently Tamanoi and now Kakuryu is on Sunday Sports - he did a Waka-style bout demonstration of the Atamifuji bout

For 7, never if the top 7 appearing are all Y and O. And never before today if the top 7 active rikishi are all Y-S. Akinomaki 39,776 Posted May 12 (edited) It is already a first since the start of Showa that all y/o on the banzuke are at the basho and lose on day 1 o - today it were all y/o/s Last time 5 or more y/o are at the basho and lose was day 6 Aki 2006, 1y/5o o Edited May 12 by Akinomaki
Yubinhaad 11,546 Posted May 12 (edited) 11 hours ago, rhyen said: Don’t know if that is a 1st. Agora vs Fujimusashi. Fujimusashi did an amiuchi at the edge, sending Agora off the dohyo and injuring Agora’s right wrist/arm. Gyoji points to Agora. Nihonoseki raises an objection, meeting is delayed while Urakaze & ringside staff attend to Agora. Agora manages to get up and holds his right arm while going back to the corner. Meeting decided in favour of a torinaoshi. Unfortunately, Agora cannot continue, so the torinaoshi becomes a zensho for Fujimusashi. Not the first time, although sort of appropriate that this time the lucky winner was Fujimusashi - last time the unlucky loser was his now-retired stablemate Bushi. I had the feeling watching Hoshoryu's expression that when he saw what was brewing he went along and lost for the effect. 6

I've no doubt hinkaku will be drummed into him by Nishonoseki-san, but for a shin-sanyaku in his 1st match with a mage I'm all for allowing a modicum of exuberance at beating a yokozuna.
Koorifuu 886 Posted May 12 Speaking of Onosato, what's with this grimace he made a number of times during his interview? Is it a tic he's always had but I never noticed? Or might he be in pain? Not a good sign if it's the latter, since there was no apparent cause during the bout.
Sumo Spiffy 535 Posted May 12 I flipped through the day one schedules back to 1995 to see if there was another time when every single sanyaku v. maegashira match ended in a maegashira win (wasn't fair to just look for a single sanyaku victory since a lot of day ones had multiple sanyaku v. sanyaku matches). Best I got was one where there was one sanyaku win in those matchups: Aki 2017 (O1E Takayasu def. M1E Tochinoshin). And the yokozuna beat the komusubi as well. This includes all those bashos where the sanyaku was enormous and there weren't that many sanyaku v. maegashira matches. I did it quickly, so I might have missed something, but yeah, this looks like a first.
