So much for my predictions: makekoshi for Takayasu, no kyujo for Mitakeumi, no sansho for Shonannoumi and maybe kachikoshi for Atamifuji - how the hell did he manage to win in spite of the oyakata on NHK today?

Because Takarafuji defused the normally volatile oyakata.

Maybe for beating the leader and KK as a high maegashira? He didn't end up getting it though.................announcement just made:

Gino-sho: Onosato

Kanto-sho: Shonannoumi (conditional on winning last), Oshoma (conditional on winning last)

Shukun-sho: Onosato, Abi, or Daieisho if they win the yusho

Hiradoumi's name was thrown into the candidates list but did not get the threshold number of votes

My prediction is now a 12-3 yusho for Onosato with shukun- and kantosho and a kachikoshi for Takayasu (I hope that doesn't jinx him like my ridiculous prediction)

Kyujo for Mitakeumi after he gets his 8th win in the next 3 days, makekoshi for Wakamotoharu, Atamifuji, Hiradoumi and Oho, kantosho for Shonannoumi and no ginosho.

Demotion for Takerufuji, Tomokaze and Tsurugisho, re-promotion for Endo, Chiyoshoma and Wakatakakage.

Not completely off at last - I changed to ginosho for Onosato in the sansho prediction, Shonannoumi at least had the chance, but blew it. Mitakeumi didn't win another and might as well have gone kyujo, same for Tomokaze after injuring the right knee on day 13.

Why did Abi think he had that. Fathers, sons, and their unborn children all knew his only chance was a henka. I'm glad it's not an 11-4 yusho but one sekitori playoff would've been nice :-/

E: actually on a replay it looks like he was fucked regardless. I'm still going to be salty

All i'm thinking about now is the poor Tokoyama, who has to hurry to summon an oicho from scratch with hair, which is probably still too short. (Laughing...)

But congratulations to Onosato! Next Ozeki swooping in with force.

What? No oicho? Sad.

I think we haven't mentioned it yet, Onosato is on the way to the fastest yusho ever after debut in his 7th basho - manageable because he had the start at ms10TD. Takerufuji from maezumo did in in 10, Wajima from ms60TD in 15 basho. o

Also the first yusho by a new sanyaku after 67 years ago (then) Annenyama

Which also happened in the first year with 6 basho. And let's hope Oonosato will be a bit more successful.

And the moment i ask, it is presented. Expected it to be earlier in line, because of course it is the best and most beautiful cup...

This basho was a bit of a bummer to me because of so many guys being kyujo/fighting while injured and Kirishima's impending demotion, but I'm very pleased with the outcome.
Congratz to Ōnosato (Yushowinner...)

It's interesting how the order of nations in the ceremony changes all the time

Presented after Thailand and before the US president cup - I wonder what determines the order of countries, now after the interview: Arabia (UAR) - Mongolia - Bulgaria - France - Thailand - Israel - USA - China - Czechia - Mexico - Hungary 2305_15.pdf

In 2019 the president's cup of course before the interview with the prime minister's cup, then the order: Hungary - Arabia (UAR) - Mongolia - Bulgaria - France - Czechia - Mexico - Thailand - China 1905_15.pdf

This time Czechia - Arabia - Hungary - Mongolia - Bulgaria - Thailand - USA - China - France - Mexico 2405_15.pdf - none from Israel

- and that the NHK award is still not presented there, only mentioned as also awarded.

Also the US president cup was the only one presented by someone without any knowledge of Japanese

A bit disappointing that he didn't yusho at Maegashira. B-)

Still, I think Takerufuji won't have nearly as many yusho as Onosato in the end.

Mostly due to injuries.

Maybe I'm weird but I've been enjoying this extended period of no really dominant rikishi; even Terunofuji has only managed 14-1 twice and 15-0 once in his whole career. I like the unpredictability. Onosato may or may not be the one to bring it all to an end. We'll see.

Regardless, hearty congratulations to Onosato on a well-earned hatsu yusho - and to Nishonoseki-san, not least for his quick work on the hinkaku front; the very muted 'Yes!' reaction on the dohyo was a big improvement over day 1. Getting a bit emotional at the ringside (while your dad's completely in bits in the audience) is perfectly acceptable, IMO.

At 10-5 and 11-4J respectively, Hoshoryu and Kotozakura put up ozeki numbers, so I can't really complain. I'm immensely disappointed about Kirishima losing his rank, though.

Since their has been a lot of chaos at the top, I was hoping for a playoff but congratulations go to Onosato.

Wakatakakage said no playoff in Juryo today. Congratulations on the yusho and return to the top division but a henka?

What a great throw from Takayasu. He made that look effortless.

During the broadcast, Hiro said that Ura beating Wakamotoharu was an upset. Wakamotoharu only won one time after returning from his toe injury. Toe injuries are no joke. I have had a broken toe and it took a few weeks to recover. I would have been surprised if Ura had lost that match even with losing eight straight times.

Abi should've henka'd. Nevertheless, Onosato looks like the lone top dog going forward. Congratulations to him.

I almost forgot: congratulations to Oshoma on his rookie kanto-sho.

Having to earn it after being fed to sanyaku seems a bit of a harder route than some other recent recipients have had to take.

Glad to see that Wakatakakage will be returning (though he likely would have yusho or not), but quite disappointed with the henka.

Hearty congratulations to Onosato, and good lord his dad looks to be a big guy as well! Apparently the boy came by it honestly, as it were.

An 11-4 (Kagayaki) is only the 5th strongest record in juryo. That can't be too common.

According to this crude query, only once before (in 1963, with 18 Juryo ranks) has 11-4 been exceeded by 4 rikishi. The next best was 10-5. https://sumodb.sumogames.de/Banzuke.aspx?b=196307

According to the very similar query here, only the tournament immediately before that one and 5 times in the massive Juryo of the 1950s did 5 rikishi in Juryo have more than 10 wins. https://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&group_by=basho&having=5&form1_rank=J&form1_wins=>10
