Yubinhaad 11,573 Posted March 11 Bit late, but there are four withdrawals from the lower divisions ahead of Day 3: Sd35e Dainichido (fusenpai Day 2) Sd48e Hokutosakae (fusenpai Day 2) Sd62w Chikuba (fusenpai Day 2) Jd43w Kazunofuji - couldn't offer much resistance in his bout on Day 1, so probably carrying an injury into the basho.
Kintamayama 44,477 Posted March 12 (edited) Hidenoumi kyujo-didn’t show up today. Diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis, and not so cute diarrhea. Prolly back very soon. Edited March 12 by Kintamayama

WAKATAKE 2,637 Posted March 13 Shimazuumi the first sekitori to withdraw this basho https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202403130000403.html Confirmed on the NSK site too
Yubinhaad 11,573 Posted March 13 Ahead of Day 5, two rikishi begin their basho while one has to withdraw. Entering/Returning: Sd7w Aratakayama Sd35e Dainichido (fusenpai Day 2, withdrew Day 3) Withdrawing: Jd63w Matsuzawa - Limped away favouring his left leg. He made the mistake of stepping all the way down to the floor with his right, leaving his left leg on the dohyo, which Azumanami couldn't help but land on. Hopefully it's not serious, and hopefully he learns not to do that again. 14 hours ago, WAKATAKE said: Shimazuumi the first sekitori to withdraw this basho https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202403130000403.html Confirmed on the NSK site too Left calf injury, requiring approximately three weeks' treatment.

Yubinhaad 11,573 Posted March 15 Déjà vu ahead of Day 7, as two more rikishi begin their basho and one more has to withdraw. Asashosakari 18,868 Posted March 16 (edited) Bombshell news as Nikkan states that Terunofuji is indeed withdrawing. Edit: Nikkan updated the article to add comments by Isegahama-oyakata saying that the yokozuna's lower back is the main issue. He'll try to get back in shape for May, with Isegahama ruling out surgical options because full rehab from that would take too much time. Haven't seen the official certificate wording yet, but Sanspo says that Shirokuma felt pain in his back following his Day 7 victory over Kagayaki and quotes Nishonoseki-oyakata that it appears to be a (relatively mild) strain that they will be checking day-to-day, so it's quite possible that Shirokuma will be re-entering.

Jakusotsu 5,823 Posted March 18 (edited) 2:30pm and there's still no Makuuchi torikumi published for day 10. Another last-minute kyujo looming? Or are they extending the Senshuraku routine to the whole week now? Edit: online now, but very late. Edited March 18 by Jakusotsu

And another Sponichi article 90 minutes later: He's another diarrhea victim (what's going on?) additionally running a fever since last night, and plans to be absent from Day 10 only. "Catarrhal enteritis" says the medical certificate which also projects a one-day rest period. Tobizaru's been hooked up to an IV drip and is apparently in the process of feeling better already. Nevertheless, this will be his career-first kyujo (Nagoya 2022 Covid shenanigans aside). Edited March 19 by Asashosakari
