New game ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I know there are so many (fabulous!) games and almost everything has been done already but I am thinking of launching a new one that wouldn't be to difficult to play.
All Makuuchi rikishi will be paired with an opponent based on the banzuke.
The higher ranked will face the lower ranked, the second higher ranked will face the second lower ranked and so on...
These will become our 21 head-to-head for the entire basho.
The goal is to pick who will win this "virtual" bout each day.

For example, based on Hatsu 24 banzuke the pairs would have been the following :

1. Terunofuji - Aoiyama
2. Kirishima - Shimazuumi
3. Hoshoryu - Bushozan
4. Takakeisho - Takarafuji
5. Kotonowaka - Onosato
6. Daieisho - Tomokaze
7. Takayasu - Onosho
8. Ura - Kotoshoho
9. Wakamotoharu - Endo
10. Atamifuji - Churanoumi
11.Midorifuji - Myogiryu
12. Abi - Takanosho
13. Gonoyama - Oho
14. Hokutofuji - Tsurugisho
15. Tobizaru - Sadanoumi
16. Shodai - Tamawashi
17. Ryuden - Meisei
18. Nishikigi - Mitakeumi
19. Kinbozan -  Hiradoumi
20. Shonannoumi - Hokuseiho
21. Ichiyamamoto - Asanoyama

And the list for day 1 would have been :

1. Terunofuji (vs Ura, 6-1) - Aoiyama (vs Shimazuumi, 0-2)
2. Kirishima (vs Wakamotoharu, 9-4) - Shimazuumi (vs Aoiyama, 2-0)
3. Hoshoryu (vs Atamifuji, 1-1) - Bushozan (vs Onosato, 2-0)
4. Takakeisho (vs Midorifuji, 5-0) - Takarafuji (vs Tomokaze, 2-3)
5. Kotonowaka (vs Abi, 7-2) - Onosato (vs Bushozan, 0-2)
6. Daieisho (vs Gonoyama, 3-0) - Tomokaze (vs Takarafuji, 3-2)
7. Takayasu (vs Hokutofuji, 14-10) - Onosho (vs Kotoshoho, 2-6)
8. Ura (vs Terunofuji, 1-6) - Kotoshoho (vs Onosho, 6-2)
9. Wakamotoharu (vs Krishima, 4-9) - Endo (vs Churanoumi, 2-0)
10. Atamifuji (vs Hoshoryu, 1-1) - Churanoumi (vs Endo, 0-2)
11.Midorifuji (vs Takakeisho, 0-5) - Myogiryu (vs Takanosho, 6-9)
12. Abi (vs Kotonowaka, 2-7) - Takanosho (vs Myogiryu, 9-6)
13. Gonoyama (vs Daieisho, 0-3) - Oho (vs Tsurugisho, 6-2)
14. Hokutofuji (vs Takayasu, 10-14) - Tsurugisho (vs Oho, 2-6)
15. Tobizaru (vs Shodai, 4-8) - Sadanoumi (vs Tamawashi, 12-8)
16. Shodai (vs Tobizaru, 8-4) - Tamawashi (vs Sadanoumi, 8-12)
17. Ryuden (vs Nishikigi, 7-5) - Meisei (vs Mitakeumi, 6-11)
18. Nishikigi (vs Ryuden, 5-7) - Mitakeumi (vs Meisei, 11-6)
19. Kinbozan (vs Shinannoumi, 5-1) -  Hiradoumi (vs Hokuseiho, 4-1)
20. Shonannoumi (vs Kinbozan, 1-5) - Hokuseiho (vs Hiradoumi, 1-4)
21. Ichiyamamoto (vs Asanoyama, 0-2) - Asanoyama (vs Ichiyamamoto, 2-0)

If there are one or more kyujo before the start of the basho, the bottom slots will be filled with Juryo rikishi.
If a kyujo happens during the basho then the concerned head-to-head will be "cancelled" until the kyujo rikishi enters the basho again if he ever does.

Scoring :

If both rikishi win or lose that day, no points will be earned. if there is one "winner" the player will get one point provided he picked correctly.
Bonus point : Each day you can select one "captain" (it can be a different captain each day). You just have to add a "C" after the shikona you chose.  If your "captain" scores your point will be doubled.

Hence a minimum of zero to a maximum of 22 points can be scored each day.

The winner will be the player with the most points at the end of the basho.
Tiebreaker for the yusho, highest number of points scored in one day. If still tied we go to the second higher score and so on till there is a winner.

I haven't thought about special prizes yet but something could be done about it.

For the first edition in Haru 24, entries will be accepted here or in PM (you can just copy/paste the list of the day and keep the winner of each H2H). If the game is successful, I'll consider entries through Survey Monkey or something similar in the future.

Your thoughts/comments are most welcome.

Matching up the rikishi like that seems to lead to fairly uninteresting pairs at the top of the lineup; you've got yokozuna/ozeki/sekiwake KK machines versus what's normally the main contenders for an MK-induced trip to juryo. Maybe 1-22, 2-23, ..., 20-41, 21-42 would be less lopsided.

What would be the name of this game? I think most of the successful sumo games have the 'USP' (Unique Selling Point) of the game somehow included - or implied at - with their names.

That is a very fair argument I also thought about.  However as the low ranked rikishi will face, at least in the first week, opponents of similar level thus with a good chance of winning, maybe the "duels" wouldn't be so unbalanced afterall. And upsets are always possible which could become the salt of the game.

That said I'm all up for a "1-22, 2-23..... 20-41, 21-42" instead if other potential players also prefer it.

I must admit I haven't thought of a name yet. Any ideas, venerable one?

Didn't think about a name specifically, but after pondering the rules, Twisted Toto seems to fit.

Perfect ! Maybe Twisted Makuuchi Toto (TMT)?

I didn't notice a big interest from players but let's try it once in March and see how it goes.

I'll change the matchups to 1-22, 2-23... 20-41, 21-42 as advised by Asashosakari but I'll keep a record of my suite to see if it really doesn't work at all.

Too much depends on random chance. Why should any already burned-out sumo gaming stalwart bother with this game when there's Toto and SG already?

Didn't mean to be either negative or offensive - it's just my style most of the time. The question remains, by the way, and it's not only addressed to you as the game's creator, but also to the sumo gamers who happen to read this thread.

Haha, it seems Martin is back in good shape. Hope to see your comeback in a couple of games soon.

Well, as I said in my OP " I know there are so many (fabulous!) games and almost everything has been done already".

I'm just trying this once and if nobody's interested or if it turns out that it doesn't worth spending time playing it then the game will die quickly. That said if we don't try it at least once we'll never know. ;-)

Maybe at some point. I won't make any promises, but I'm not ruling it out, either.
