Katooshu 3,135 Posted March 14 (edited) Takerufuji is 18-2 as a sekitori; Onosato is 16-1 vs maegashira, had his other defeats come to current ozeki/yokozuna, and is already positioning himself for sanyaku. Love to see hype rikishi delivering Aonishiki still unbeaten in his career too, now 17-0 and looking good each time. Shishi may not be the highest ranked Ukrainian next year. Between new prospects and injury returners, the talent is pretty solid in jonokuchi and jonidan this basho. Sumo!!! Edited March 14 by Katooshu
RabidJohn 1,663 Posted March 14 Oho's kinboshi totally put Mitakeumi's remarkable win over Shodai out of my mind. I've noticed he's more likely to go straight for a belt grip now than he ever used to, but picking up Shodai was totally unexpected. I'm not getting overexcited by a solitary result, but it was great to see from my former favourite.

Benihana 1,901 Posted March 14 Terunofuji is now at 19 kinboshi. And he "achieved" that with only 126 bouts. Since Kiribayama botched his run, there seems no short term relief in sight. Poor Teru and poor NHK treasurer.

Hopefully, Hoshoryu can keep his shoulder in its socket, though. Ura's katasukashi on Kotonowaka was lovely, too, making it 3/4 ozeki scalps for him this time. Those really were two pretty finishes to behold. Great to see such skills on display
Yamanashi 3,724 Posted March 15 On Day 5, Sd10e Oyamada defeated Sd8w Ebisumaru with the kimarite omata. The NSK video says "this rare technique has not been used since 1958." Are there any occurrences of this technique since the video?

Faustonowaka 112 Posted March 15 (edited) And 46-year old Satonofuji won by zubuneri today, giving him a grand total of 25 wins with this technique, that has only been used 197 times since 1927. Edited March 15 by Faustonowaka

RabidJohn 1,663 Posted March 15 Two days on the trot Mitakeumi's impressed, but that was surely more effort than he usually puts into a whole basho. Second week's going to be interesting... Massively impressed by Atamifuji letting Asanoyama get into his favourite position, then resisting everything the former ozeki could throw at him and getting the win. Massively unimpressed by Kirishima's win today, but a win's a win and he needs them. Onosato and Takerufuji co-leading feels like something we'll be seeing a lot of in the future. Terunofuji had to stop fighting today, but I'm not writing him off just yet. He'll have a lot of goodwill for showing up in January and winning, so sitting out 2-3 basho to recover and get in shape for another attempt at yusho no. 10 isn't out of the question.

If you're going to appear on the dohyo parading obvious weaknesses, you can't expect your opponents not to target them. Leg sweeps are perfectly legitimate. Tobizaru broke Terunofuji at their last meet and tried very hard to do so again. I'm sure he'll avoid Tobizaru tomorrow and pull out Edited March 15 by Akinomaki
Koorifuu 886 Posted March 15 (edited) Put up a bit of a respectable fight against Wakatakakage, beat Hakuoho head-on, then proceed to lose to a hapless 0-5 Shimanoumi in sumo's equivalent of a mudfight? Here's Oshoumi, everyone. Edited March 15 by Koorifuu
dingo 1,160 Posted March 15 In my opinion it's not a surprise that Wakatakakage won against Hakuoho. While I don't know what is Hakuoho's current physical condition, Wakatakakage has wrestled at the highest level, won a yusho and been on an ozeki run. So it should be natural that he puts his experience to good use. Endo seems to be on his way to juryo. Wonder if he will stick around if that really happens? Takayasu lost against Mitakeumi purely on stamina. He was thoroughly knackered at the end of the bout, whereas Mitakeumi surprisingly did better. It was a long bout though. Tamawashi hasn't done that well this basho, but today was a vintage performance from him. Amazing that he's still here even when others like Takarafuji, Aoiyama and now even Endo are on the verge of fading away. Asanoyama has been made look average first by Hoshoryuu yesterday and now by Atamifuji. While I don't think Asanoyama is average, he somehow doesn't quite seem to have the edge that he had as an ozeki. Ura was so much into the bout that for a second he didn't want to let go of Daieisho's leg! If he had had a bit more space he could've pulled off a very nice surprise there. Nishikigi must be feeling somewhat deja vu, beating the yokozuna but then getting beat by everyone else. It's not the first time for him. Hoshoryuu did the best he could, but seemingly fate demands at least one ozeki loss per day and today was his turn. Though I don't mean to disregard Tobizaru's excellent effort which was the cause for the loss. In effect Tobizaru did what Asanoyama couldn't yesterday. Terunofuji possibly looked at the torikumi and hoped for an easier opponent in Takanosho, but their head to head is actually pretty close and in this shape the yokozuna was obviously no match for a strong yotsu rikishi. As everyone mentioned, we probably won't see Terunofuji again this basho and I wonder if he'll even join the next one. About 1-2 basho per year seems to be his maximum at this stage.
Akinomaki 39,776 Posted March 15 No sanyaku in the lead any more and 3 ozeki at 2 behind. I still refuse to believe in a maegashira yusho, but it is the proper stormy Haru basho.

What's more, Abi being the only sanyaku with five wins, which is even more ironic considering he moved up to komusubi by sub-par standards. In that regard, and expecting Onosato and Takerufuji going 8-0, would it be better to pair them early or wait until senshuraku for the showdown?

I would prefer a senshuraku showdown, but that's very unlikely to happen, let alone one in which they will be fighting for the yusho. By day 8 or 9 Takarefuji will probably already be facing some higher ranked opponents to keep him from winning the Yusho and I don't expect Onosato's fate will be any different. He also hasn't faced anyone above Maegashira 2 yet. Edited March 15 by Chijanofuji spelling error
