I saw a couple of the brown jacket syndicate break ranks and actually smile today...

They have a kensho going each day, so far as the only one on the bout: day 1 Onosho-Tamawashi, 2 Wakamotoharu-Meisei, 3 Wakamotoharu-Takanosho, 4 Tamawashi-Kinbozan

Likely they enjoy those bouts the most.

Kirishima having a real stinker so far. It looked like nerves clearly got the better of him today, he had a strong position against Ura and... he just sort of dove into him?

One sekiwake and one komusubi still in the lead - and they meet to tomorrow to have one sanyaku left without a loss

I'm not enjoying seeing Kirishima lose, but that was a fantastic dummy Ura sold him today. Never seen a move quite like that before.

Butsugari coming Ura's way? That was by far the angriest body language I ever remember seeing from Kirishima.

Whaddaya say, reverse jinxing works! Shodai did pretty well against Hokutofuji and even moved forward, not trying for his usual last ditch tawara turnaround. I will shut up now in order not to mess with the reverse-jinx.

Great effort by Takayasu against an unexpectedly resistant Kotoshouhou. I was holding my breath in the middle of the match that Takayasu wouldn't mess up his back again with the heavy lifting like happened last basho.

One of the two winless pushers Tamawashi and Gounoyama was gonna get a shiroboshi in their head to head today. Gounoyama got the better of Tamawashi, but the tachiai was a pretty clear matta. Gounoyama might've won anyway, but the gyoji should've done better.

Hiradoumi gave a small test to Onosato -- how do you handle a small fast rikishi who gets your belt and puts you in an awkward position? Just like on the first day, Onosato handled being put in a somewhat disadvantageous position quite easily. Naturally he has the advantage of size and height, but some other similarly sized rikishi (looking at Oho for example) could've failed so a good reaction and result nonetheless.

Speaking of Oho, he did moderately well but as soon as his pulling instinct took over he lost the initiative and wily Tobizaru pulled him down eventually. Not disastrous sumo from Oho, but not so good either.

There's obviously something wrong with Daieisho. At this rate maegashira is closing down on him fast...

Hoshoryuu on the other hand seems to have gotten over his first day loss and right back to a confident groove. If he maintains this level, then to me he looks like a serious yusho candidate.

The other mongolian ozeki probably wants to forget this basho pretty fast. Kirishima isn't injured to my knowledge, but something is off in his mental game/concentration. Doesn't mean he's not hiding a physical issue though.

Nishikigi is in serious giant killer mode again this basho, and almost gave Kotonowaka some trouble. But the successful grip change worked well for the ozeki and gave him a much needed win. 1-2 score would've looked quite bad for the new ozeki.

Takakeisho's win was more luck than anything else. He simply managed to drop a split second later than Meisei who did better sumo of the two. For Takakeisho likewise 2-1 is a major boon on his quest of getting off the kadoban train.

Asanoyama gave his best but Terunofuji is simply better and stronger on the belt than him and there's nothing else Asanoyama can really do. The head-to-head score states it pretty clearly as well.

He shouldn't be upset with anyone else but himself though...

I had to look up whether they're actually close to the same size, because when I look at them, Onosato seems way bigger. But, at least according to the JSA's site, there's only a seven kilo difference between them. It feels like Ichinojo and Mitoryu—Ichinojo always seemed far larger, but statistically they were about the same.

I dunno, maybe it's just me. I'm just sitting here still wondering who turned Daieisho into the Tin Man.

Would be sweet if we somehow got Takerufuji-Onosato. Onosato got the better of their college meetings, but Takerufuji has improved massively since then. He was nowhere near the force he's been professionally - who says stick legs can't be powerful!

We will if both of them keep winning.

Sad to see Daieisho and Hokotufuji in bad form.

Hokutofuji is still hurt. Daieisho? I just don't know.

One of the most fun days I can remember in recent times. No idea where this one's going to go from here.

Kudos to Takayasu for jumping out to that early lead and ensuring Kotonowaka gets the yusho.

He's done the math on exactly how many wins he needs to keep his salary (4, I think) and he'll expend the minimum amount of effort to collect them when the matchups are in his favor.

We got the jinx out of the way before the basho even began. Cheer away with impunity.

Wakatakakage 4-0 in Juryo. Good start, he seems to be healthy.
