Akinomaki 39,803 Posted March 23 Nobody had failed to get the yusho with a 2 win lead after day 13, but instead of fastest ever yusho, Takerufuji may become the first for that - but first Hoshoryu has to win 2 more and Onosato
Hakuho Oyakata 6 Posted March 23 Asa pre-pandemic showing up. Hopefully nothing serious for Takerufuji.

Akinomaki 39,803 Posted March 23 NHK reports that with icing at the whole leg below the knee, Takerufuji left in still the wheelchair - this is sumo, so if he can crawl tomorrow, he'll be there
Akinomaki 39,803 Posted March 23 Right ankle injury apparently, an ambulance left with Takerufuji for a hospital
Akinomaki 39,803 Posted March 23 Chiyonofuji won the yusho with an absence on day 15, but he had decided it on day 14 - Onosato will rather get the yusho. I guess they'll pair Takerufuji with Gonoyama and Hoshoryu with Onosato
Godango 956 Posted March 23 The silver lining being that we have definitively either a shin-nyumaku yusho, or a yusho a Rikishi with no mage. Hard to feel anything other than concern and disappointment though.
Bunbukuchagama 688 Posted March 23 We'll have a new yusho winner either way.

Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted March 23 Hope Takerufuji can recover, but his skinny ankles may have a hard time withstanding the brutal grind of Ozumo.
Kintamayama 44,354 Posted March 23 Can he go kyujo for his final bout and appear for the playoff? I mean, is the kyujo for the day or for the bout? Has this ever come up before?

Bunbukuchagama 688 Posted March 23 The rumor says it might be an Achilles tear. If so, he is done. The most amazingly short and successful career in ozumo history?
Kintamayama 44,354 Posted March 23 So if Takerufuji doesn't show up and Oonosato loses, we have a kyujo yusho? And Isegahama receives the Cup? Oh, wow.

dingo 1,160 Posted March 23 A bit weird decision in giving Endo the outright win vs Sadanoumi. In my eyes it was close enough to warrant a mono-ii and Sadanoumi would be right to feel a bit disgruntled, not getting at least another shot at kachikoshi. Mitakeumi has settled back to his usual mid energy pace after showing some spark in the first half of the basho. With 8 wins on hand let's see if he bothers to make an effort for the ninth tomorrow. Takayasu showed Rouga the makuuchi rookie how things are done. Even though he dropped from the yusho run pretty early, Takayasu has had a good basho and can make it an excellent one by getting the 11th win tomorrow. Ditto for Gonoyama who got to double digits as well today and should be pretty happy with his basho. Asanoyama the yusho spoiler! He beat Takerufuji with good sumo, but the leg injury Takerufuji picked up is very unfortunate. I didn't notice any particular time in the bout where his leg moved unnaturally, so I wonder what's the cause. Yusho is a very powerful motivator, but Takerufuji should go kyujo and not aggravate the potentially serious injury more. He'll have plenty of yusho chances in the future. How about that Ozeki club now? Kotonowaka flattens Hoshoryuu with an excellent reaction to a direction change and throw attempt, holding on with his arm and smothering any ozeki yusho thoughts for this basho. Double digits is not a bad result for the shin ozeki. At the end of the day we are back where we started with two rookies in the lead. Takerufuji is a big question mark and if Onosato loses can even pick up the yusho by going kyujo! Not that would be something. Do they deliver emperor's cups to hospitals? Maybe Takakeisho can come out of kyujo and they can have a no contact staring contest until one falls asleep. (too soon, I know. Sumo can be very cruel. This applies to both Takerufuji and Takakeisho).

I remember kyujo Chiyonofuji turning up with his arm in a sling to receive the Emperor's Cup one-handed, but his dislocated shoulder didn't prevent him from mounting the dohyo. If it is an Achilles tendon injury, they might need a ramp to get Takerufuji up there. I wasn't surprised he lost to Asanoyama, but the outcome is a bloody cruel twist of fate. Just after the tachiai he stops his forward pressure and jumps up in the air, it must have been at that point. Edited March 23 by Octofuji Spelling

Look at the angle of his foot as it slides down.
hakutorizakura 590 Posted March 23 This is really weird, the dominant race leader got badly injured on the way to a possible playoff which he'll need a miracle to win?? Hello again Haru 2017??! Ex-Kisenosato would die either laughing or crying if Onosato ended up getting Terunofuji's fate that time. (Yeah he needs to beat Hosh first of course)
