sumojoann 1,256 Posted March 22 (edited) Somewhere, and I believe it was on SF, I saw a photo of Kirishima sitting at a table with a large group of Mongolians, eating a meal. It looked like a family meal. A young woman sitting at the table holding a baby, was identified as Kirishima’s wife. This was a while back. So unless they’re still in their honeymoon period, I doubt if marriage is the cause of his poor performance in the ring. EDIT to add ——- Per a post on Reddit, Kirishima got married in August 2019, and his daughter was born in February 2020. Edited March 22 by sumojoann
Sumo Spiffy 535 Posted March 22 (edited) The idea that Kiri is somehow negatively affected by his marriage seems bonkers. It's not like Daieisho the first three days, when he basically sleepwalked through his fights; Kiri's been consistently battling. For him to dig in hard against Midorifuji and still get walked out of the ring? He has to be injured. This is the same dude who's yoinked guys way bigger than him around the ring. His power is a fraction of what it should be, and that's not something a lack of focus is going to cause. Edited March 22 by Sumo Spiffy
sumojoann 1,256 Posted March 22 (edited) I doubt if anyone would think that marriage itself would cause problems in the ring. However, all joking aside, there does seem to be a causal relationship between being a newlywed and performing poorly at the next Basho (or next few Basho). Nishikifuji comes to mind as a recent example. Edited March 22 by sumojoann

Query. I'm overlooking Tsurugidake's promotion in May 2011 for obvious reasons. (Query is limited to 2004 onwards, when juryo got its current size) I was mainly highlighting Chiyosakae's ridiculous non-demotion. Shimanoumi better watch out because Chiyosakae might be in the running for another ridiculous one. Wakakosho, never knew ya but you were a lucky chap. But maybe if this contender appeared, he'd just fade out because his body couldn't follow. Don't really know. Still, he's out. Kirishima has a phantom pain somewhere, because he's looking absolutely terrified of any contact. Out of contention. Hoshoryu seems like his usual self, sucking more often than not, but getting his wins here and there en route to a "pedestrian" 9-10 wins. And I say pedestrian because this guy should be a yokozuna-in-waiting. He has clearly the ability, lacks a bit in the body department but could compensate it with speed...but no, he gets dominated way too often and just stands there waiting for a flashy counter instead of imposing his will. Frustrating. Takakeisho is probably praying nobody charges at him full speed and breaks his neck. He should be happy escaping his kadoban. Kotonowaka is doing...fine...I guess. I don't see him cleaning the field though, but maybe he has the best chance of these bums. He probably is peaking though and if he can maintain this peak for a couple of years, maybe he'll get some yushos to his name just by being there. At least we can watch Wakatakakage going for a zensho in juryo to see some "excellence". Please, Lord, save me with your Noodly Appendage. Wakatakage is 1-4 since I said this. Dim mak. The rest, I'm pretty spot on. Hoshoryu defeated Takerufuji doing exactly what I accuse him of doing. What really worried me is that Takakeisho couldn't keep his social distancing from Wakamotoharu (notoriously weak to pushers) for even half a second. (Though "worry" might not be the verb I'd really use...) 16 hours ago, yohcun said: I sense a Takakeisho henka in the coming days. I think you might be on to something. Katooshu 3,135 Posted March 22 Kiri has lost 3 straight to Midorifuji, including last basho where he started 11-2. He's clearly not 100 percent, but losing to Midorifuji is a regular thing for him.

If that's the cause then Kirishima should've done what Tobizaru did, take a day off with IV drips and come back. Wonder if we'll ever find out the reason behind Kirishima's poor performance. Covid?
