From not being able to win a title in high school or college, not even getting a single sandanme tsukedashi qualification, to blasting out makuuchi elite like nothing. Incredible transformation for Takerufuji since turning pro. My only worry is that his traps may soon swallow his head.

And how about Onosato's one arm launching of Takakeisho. I felt bad seeing him fly like that.

Now that you mention it, Takerufuji's traps are a bit reminiscent of Takanosato/Naruto back in the day. Not bad company to keep as a wrestler (though maybe less so as an oyakata).

Onokatsu?

Not a bad idea, actually. But Onokatsu is through to Juryo anyway, and promotion to sekitori ranks is arguably a bigger prize than "just" Makushita yusho. How about Chiyomaru? It would go against tradition, but would mean an actual direct promotion bout.

Juryo->Makushita

Gone: Hokuseiho

Almost certainly down: Kitaharima, Kotoeko

Needs 2 wins: Chiyosakae, Aoiyama, Hakuyozan

Needs 1 win: Shimanoumi, Tamashoho, Oshoumi, Tsushimanada, Akua, Hakuho

Makushita->Juryo (with loads of uncertainty!)

Almost certainly up: Onokatsu

Needs 1 win: Chiyomaru, Kayo, Tsukahara, Kazekeno

Needs 2 wins: Nabatame

No, it'll be a 5-1 for sure, just a question of which one. If it's not Onokatsu, probably Haruyama?

He has one bout left. :-D

He can still end up as high as 2nd in the promotion queue, and as low as 6th.

Au contraire, Kotonowaka was pretty much the last hope. Hoshoryu has to beat both of the young upstarts, or a miracle bouquet of other results appears somehow. I think Takerufuji can no longer be stopped - but if he is, it's by rematch with Onosato.

Hoshoryu is much craftier than Kotonowaka and will pull out any and all stops to avoid the humiliation of a loss to the upstart, not to mention he still has an outside shot at the yusho. It's sumo so anything can happen, but there are still four days left and Takerufuji is about to enter uncharted waters, so I'm going to hold off on presenting him with the Emperor's Cup until it's official.

I just hope nobody who’s in contention for the Yusho pulls a henka.

Kitaharima can prepare for the 10th return to juryo - makekoshi at the bottom.

It's already day 11 and we still have no promotion/demotion thread!

Okay I couldn't help myself

Onosato went wild on Takakeisho, the difference in size was really apparent.

Back when they were both 7-0 a few days ago, somehow I don't think many people expected Asakoryu and Wakatakakage to meet with matching 8-3 records eventually...

Update on promotion and relegation after day 12

Needs 1 win: Roga, Churanoumi, Ryuden

Juryo->Makunouchi

Almost certainly up: Mitoryu

Needs 2 wins: Tokihayate, Daishoho,Takarafuji, Tomokaze, Oshoma

Needs 3 wins: Asakoryu

Takakeisho sure didn’t put up much resistance in his bout with Wakamotoharu.  I hope he didn’t get injured when he was thrown out of the ring yesterday.

Hoshoryu will be a stiff test for Takerufuji tomorrow. Still a long way to go. Those with three losses still very much in this.

As I was saying...

He lost a bout! No more hope left.

I kind of wanted him to win so he could beat Taiho's record, but I imagined the match going like that. Hoshoryu did the same to Onosato in January, different technique but same method. I still hope he takes the yusho though.

No more ozeki bouts for the 2: Takerufuji gets Wakamotoharu, like the NSK announcer suggested to Wakamotoharu in the shukun interview, and Onosato Daieisho

Hoshoryu gets same score Gonoyama, who also is still in contention

No ozeki bouts at all for some of them this basho would be new territory, only Kotonowaka-Takakeisho tomorrow

Unlikely. At least Hoshoryu-Kotonowaka will still happen, no matter what*.

(*disregarding kyujo, of course)
