Sekitori Sweepstake - March 2024

Recommended Posts

J6E Gaijingai will commandeer J3E Hokuseiho.

Oh... Stay tuned for a likely redraw once the day 1 torikumi is known! (Gaijingai can be thankful that we do not yet have 70 active players, otherwise, his fate would be the same as Hokuseiho's!)

M14W Ganzohnesushi will have J9W Tamashoho.

What? Even now that we have moved to Makunouchi, Juryo rikishi are still getting spun on the wheel? Tamasho has had two 4-11 records in his past three Juryo bashos.... The other one being a 9-6, so there is still hope!

M15W Kotononami has been granted M11W Sadanoumi.

Sadanoumi was once ranked as high as M1W!  (Nine years ago.....)

S2W Takanorappa will get as a birthday present (17th March), M10W Mitakeumi.

Not sure if that is a wanted gift or not. It was less than two years ago that Mitakeumi was still an Ozeki - surely he still has some ability?

M11E WAKATAKE is getting K1W Nishikigi.

Nishikigi has been a komusubi once before....! when he got double digit losses. Oops.

M15E Seiyashi will be having M14E Nishikifuji.
At this level (M14 or below), Nishikifuji has managed a double digit KK for the past two years.

S1W Joaoiyama gets M13W Churanoumi.

Despite being 30, this is only Churanoumi's third basho in Makunouchi.

M7E Oshirokita will put his hopes on M16E Endo.

The last time Endo was ranked this low was... oh just half-a-year ago, but before that.... about 7 years ago.

K1W Bunbukuchagama will take J10W Wakatakakage.

W5A should really be ranked MUCH higher, so a good pick for the Komusubi... I think?

M1W Djodjoyoshi receives S1W Wakamotoharu.

Not bad for a replacement due to a mistake by yours truly! Before last basho, Wakamotoharu spent a year ranked in lower sanyaku.

Tamashoho (aged 30) really needs to get a move on, if he wants to be able to call himself a Makunouchi rikishi. Time to get those KKs!

M5W Kimyama will be gambling on J14E Kitaharima.

Kitaharima is 37 years old, and this is just his second basho in Juryo in the past 7 years. A last hurrah?

That feeling when you draw your least favourite sekitori (Eek...)

I guess if I look at it positively - every Hakuyozan match will be like a win for me. Either he wins and I score for the sweepstakes, or he loses and my least favourite rikishi lost.

My cousin Djodjoyoshi "who's been following Sumo since his birth" just asked me "Oh ok, who is this guy? Is he any good?" I just sent him buy me a pizza... without pineapple!

Whilst in Zimbabwe, about 35 years ago, my then girlfriend and I bought the cheapest pizza available (we were students) - banana pizza.

.....oh, and whilst living in Hong Kong, there was a Japanese 'pizza' shop, that made the pizza base from rice.....  and use your imagination for what was put on top of them!

I saw banana pizza a few years ago as a quirky limited item at a cheap chain. Personally I like seafood pizzas even though the ingredient quality is abysmal.

On a more related note, I did end up tracking my Sekitori Sweepstake history - if anyone was interested here it is. Should I be tracking any other stats?

Sekitori Sweepstake

Tournament Rikishi Rank Result My Rank My Result
2023.01 TAKARAFUJI M16E 8-7   /
2023.03 TAMASHOHO J13E 8-7 M7W /
2023.05 FUJISEIUN J13E 9-6 M3W /K
2023.07 CHIYOMARU J11W 8-7 K1W /-
2023.09 ASANOYAMA M2W 9-6 K1W /
2023.11 KOTONOWAKA S2E 11-4 K1E /S
2024.01 KOTONOWAKA S1E 13-2 S1E /O yusho
2024.03       O1W

In terms of rank progression timeline, looks most like Takakeisho at the moment. In terms of actual results it's kind of amazing how quickly the pattern becomes unique, but the math checks out. Only 3, including Kotoyuki who followed up with 12 then 7 wins, have gone 8-8-9-8-9 wins in consecutive basho.

Dejima's progression here is almost certainly the most similar overall.

At first glance I'd wager you're the only player without make-koshi so far. Tossing a coin for seven heads in a row seems like a highly unusual feat (in addition to drawing the same rikishi twice in a row).

Would you care to buy a lottery ticket for me, Mr. Gander? B-)
