Tate Gyoji retirement?

Recommended Posts

the tategyoji will reach the retirement age at the senshuraku of aki basho

will he be allowed to work that day, or will day 14 be his last?

Not letting him officiate the last bout(s) of the basho would be harsh. I have (possibly misplaced) faith the NSK wouldn't be so petty or ridiculous.

Urakata who reach retirement age during honbasho continue to work as normal until it concludes.

He will be the third Shonosuke in a row to do so, albeit only for one day. The 37th turned 65 on Day 9 of Haru 2015, the 36th on Day 5 of Natsu 2013.

I think I remember reading that wasn't always the case, and that you wouldn't be allowed to begin officiating in a tournament if you turned 65 during it. The current system seems much more fair.
