Called that yesterday- it was pretty obvious.

By additional info, I meant something concrete. The press had just posted the same speculation early on (Sanspo: "...appeared to show concern about his lower back...", Sponichi: "...was seen limping in the hanamichi...").

Anyway, the medical certificate is available now. Two weeks of rest for Takayasu due to pain that appeared in his right-side lower back region during morning practice yesterday (i.e. before the Kirishima match).

West Ozeki
Takakeisho
(Tokiwayama Beya)
has withdrawn the Day 4 of the January Tournament.

I'll go out on a limb and say Takakeishou will retire soon. He seems to suffer just being here, looks totally unmotivated, and may be harboring a more serious injury. The media says he asked to go kyujo, which is not like him at all. His fire has gone out it seems to me, and his fire is a central part of his abilities.

Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy

According to Tokiwayama Oyakata,  the condition of his neck worsened after his match against Atamifuji on day 2. He said that he had no strength in his right arm. `When I spoke to him this morning, he asked me to let him go kyujo.  I don't want to put too much pressure on him. He will not be re-entering.`He told me he couldn't go on, so he must be in a lot of pain. He's worked hard. His body is the most important thing and I want him to focus on healing slowly and resting.''  said Tokiwayama Oyakata. This is the 11th time Takakeishou has gone kyujo and it will be his 8th kadoban  come March.

It may well be he knows his window for making Y has closed, between his Mongolian fellow ōzeki and his injuries.

I feel bad for Takakeisho, obviously he has given it his all and picked up several serious injuries while doing so. He certainly can't be blamed of a lack of determination.

Coincidentally just yesterday I was thinking whether Takakeisho would be willing to continue as a rank and file maegashira were he demoted from ozeki ofr whatever reason. Many of his contemporaries do, but somehow I don't see him doing the same. It's just a gut feeling at this point though.

Also, in the end perhaps it's better that he didn't succeed in his latest tsuna run. With all due respect to Takakeisho and his achievements, sumo doesn't need another semi hobbled yokozuna at this point.

You better be glad, there is a "hobbled" Yokozuna at the moment, instead of having an extreme dominant one, which does not entertain you at all, like all the former mongolian Yokozunas not did.

Ahead of the next round of lower division action, one rikishi effectively starts his basho after a short absence, but three more have to withdraw.

Returning:

Jd62e Kaihiryu (fusenpai Day 2, withdrew Day 3)

Withdrawing:

Ms49e Yutakasho (fusenpai Day 4)

Sd9e Shuji (fusenpai Day 4)

Sd65e Kototaiki - couldn't put any weight on his right leg after a yoritaoshi loss today and had to be helped off the dohyo.

Hokuseihō out from day 6 with a right knee injury it seems, incurred in yesterday's bout. Not on NSK's site yet but various news outlets have picked it up.

One hopes that his early return doesn't backfire.

Still glad he's back.

Spoiler

And with a win!

Haven't seen any reports of the medical certificate so far, but Miyagino-oyakata (former Yokozuna Hakuho) says he won't be returning to the basho.

Meanwhile, the lower divisions see two more rapid returns and two more withdrawals ahead of Day 7.

Returning:

Ms49e Yutakasho (fusenpai Day 4, withdrew Day 5)

Sd9e Shuji (same)

Withdrawing:

Ms31w Kaishin (fusenpai Day 5)

Sd17w Kawamura

Unlucky for both of them, at their highest career rank this basho.

Hokuseiho's right knee was already wrapped, but there was nothing obviously wrong with him at the end of the bout [he bent down just fine for the kensho].

Kaishin conked his head a little at the tachiai on day 4, and seemed a little disoriented during the match; his loss was not by yorikiri, but by slippiotoshi.

Kawamura went down sideways in the corner and seemed to have hit his head against the tawara; he stayed down for about 15 seconds, and had trouble getting up from a crouch.  He then held his forehead, and needed a helping hand leaving the dohyo.

On his video today, NattoSumo said the AI translation from the papers went something like: "I have a bomb in my knee."

A knee issue that's a 'ticking timebomb' maybe?

Your guess is as good as mine, but it seems par for the course for a Miyagino deshi...

M17w Aoiyama is kyujo from Day 7. Onosho will pick up the default win.

Suspected ACL injury in the right knee, says Nikkan.
