Hokuseihō out from day 6 with a right knee injury it seems, incurred in yesterday's bout.

Haven't seen any reports of the medical certificate so far, but Miyagino-oyakata (former Yokozuna Hakuho) says he won't be returning to the basho.

On Sanspo now: Right knee meniscus injury, four weeks. Surgery scheduled for February 5th, which presumably makes that current four-weeks estimate irrelevant.

Miyagino's disciples haven't had the greatest luck with injuries thus far (Ishiura, Enho, Hakuoho, and now Hokuseiho).

Hokuseiho should be fine. He will have arthritis in 15 years, but this surgery should not affect his career.

Sad. Nine years between juryo appearances (2013 to 2022). Four months removed of being so close to the makushita yusho, too. His body could still do it but the poor guy probably couldn't take more disappointments.

I think there's a more practical reason as well, he is married and his wife gave birth to their first child, a daughter, between Nagoya and Aki basho last year (perhaps giving him a boost for that 6-1 doten result). They live in Kagoshima, I suppose he feels the time is right to earn a regular salary and set up home as a family.

17 years in sumo. He holds the record for the longest time it took to return to sekitorihood - 50 bashos between terms. (Showa era and on)

You mean intai? He doesn't need to announce it right now.

Exactly. He will be paid at least the next 4 months if he never goes on the doyo again. Can be semi-retired planning his future while still getting an income.

I meant as in kyujo, but now I see it had been dealt with on page 1 of the thread.

Is this all freak stuff or something with the training? Kiho falling that far is sad to watch.

Hokutofuji intends to come back tomorrow despite leaving the venue on a wheelchair today (Sanspo) but that's quite hard to believe.

EDIT: Corrected below.

Is saying "また明日" always a sign that they intend to return to the dohyo the next day, rather than just being a form of "see ya later"?  I don't see anything else in that article that even hints at him returning.

Takayasu trivia watch: A quick check of all rikishi with two fusenpai in one basho seems to indicate that nobody has ever re-entered a tournament twice. There are several who competed after their second fusenpai, but all of them had no matches between the first and second, so there was only one return to action.

What I haven't looked at yet (and realistically might not be able to) is rikishi whose first kyujo stint didn't begin with a fusenpai, either because they were taken off the schedule immediately or because they were initially kyujo at the start of the tournament.

You people have learned nothing!

I will only say that for Takayasu's next basho, we should have a thread for guessing when he will go kyujo.  Never mention the you-know-what.  Expect him to frustrate your expectations.

Sure, now, but not during the you-know-when.

Any info on what kabu he may use once he retires? I know he is a Japanese citizen and intends to stay on…I think he’d great so I’m excited to see him as an oyakata!
